ecb
http://www.foodrenegade.com/your-extravirgin-olive-oil-fake/ Basically states a lot of EVOO is not truly pure olive oil but a blend with other oils or lower grade olive oil. Has a couple recommendations on where to make sure you're getting the real stuff. Anyone have their own suggestions on where to source? I usually just buy the WF 365 brand EVOO but would consider trying something else if it was guaranteed pure.
Adagio
I use California Olive Ranch. I saw it at Whole Foods, and they also have it at iherb.com. It's pure olive oil.
Johnny M
There are a few tested quality brands noted in this article. I only buy those and I switched my homemade mayo from olive oil based to avocado oil and macadamia nut oil based to be safe. Adagio, your olive oil is listed as pure. Apparently labeling laws on olive oil are pretty loose though. Check out this article...pretty disturbing. http://www.naturalne...ted_canola.html
limejuicy
Ugh, this is disturbing. I hope the Whole Foods organic extra virgin is ok. I guess I'll be switching to California Olive Ranch next.
CaseyD
http://www.naturalne...ted_canola.html From this article, it says Whole Foods is out. I discovered that I have only ever bought brands of olive oil that are on the "failed" list. Wow. I think I'm going to be throwing out my olive oil and the mayo I just made right now. CaseyD
Question: Is this concern really only for olive oil, or is there concern about oils like avocado possibly not being all that you think they are?
Johnny M
Good question Casey and I don't know. The avocado oil I buy is a rich green color but i noticed recently whole foods has some avocado oil that is a pale yellow color. Totally suspect!
CaseyD
I saw the yellow avocado oil at Whole Foods too. Hmmm... I also wonder about the "light" olive oil statement at the end of the article you posted. If you want to make mayo with olive oil, what do you do? Every recipe I've seen tells you to use to light oil instead of extra virgin because of the flavor. It would be so much easier if food manufacturers could just be decent and honest.
Johnny M
The homemade mayo with regular olive oil is pretty gross. It only tastes good with light olive oil. This kinda blew my world too. I just don't make it with olive oil anymore
