karacooks Posted July 7, 2012 Share Posted July 7, 2012 As the title says, I have a question about 2 items. First one: I saw someone recommend using unsweet pickle relish or dill relish in a recipe. The only relish and pickles I can find that don't have sugar or a long list of preservatives are the Clausen ones and they do have sodium benzoate and polysorbate 80. I am suspecting those are a no-no on Whole30? Second one is V8. I know that we're encouraged not to rely on juices and that's fine. I usually have a small snack sized can of spicy V8 in the afternoons. I don't use it as a veggie substitute, just a nice cold spicy snack that's portable. The can I have says all natural vegetable juices and spices (and lists them) and potassium chloride. Does that kill my V8? If so I can just spice up some regular plain tomato juice and deal. Those additives aren't encouraged, of course, but they're not one of the three (MSG, carrageenan, and sulfites) specifically prohibited on the Whole30. Moderators Tom Denham Posted July 7, 2012 Moderators Share Posted July 7, 2012 Regarding the pickles... The Whole30 rules only list 3 additives/preservatives to avoid - carageenan, MSG or sulfites. That means the Clausen's are not ruled out, although better pickles exist. Until cucumbers came into season and I began making my own, I was buying Bubbies brand pickles and sauerkraut. They're really good. The problem with the V8 is not so much the ingredients as that it is processed and a juice. During your Whole30, we want you to adjust to eating whole foods. And we do not encourage drinking your meals or snacks. Note: I wrote this before the boss posted her note saying the V8 was okay, but my opinion remains the same... V8 is not a good choice. I choose to do so for a few reasons: juices are not an issue for me; I don't have the mindset of drinking meal replacements; I don't drink them (as many people do) because I hate veggies and this is the only way for me to get in my veggie fix; and it's not an everyday thing for me. Honestly if the commercial V8 was out due to preservatives, I'd probably just make my own in the juicer and continue to enjoy it. I just enjoy tomato juice and the spiciness of the V8. Thanks for the rec on the pickle brands. I see that you're nearby, so I will look for them in my Publix or Kroger after I finish the jar of Claussen's that I have. I personally do not care for tea or coffee and normally drink water but have used V8 when I wanted something besides water. I haven't started Whole30 yet, my husband and I decided we have way too many events and family reunions to attend between now and labor day, we have chosen to start on Sept 10th and we're already prepping our pantry and freezer with compliant foods, especially when we find quality meats on sale. Robin Strathdee Posted August 16, 2012 Share Posted August 16, 2012 Sharon - As long as you're eating your veggies in the right quantity and drinking plenty of water throughout your day, I don't see anything inherently wrong with it.
