HealthyinOK
I'm only on day 4 and I just don't understand how my stomach can possibly be getting flatter! It's totally amazing!! I've done diets before and never experienced such an improvement like this so quickly. How does this do this???
Moderators Tom Denham Posted April 14, 2012 Moderators Share Posted April 14, 2012 A flatter stomach in four days suggests you were experiencing stomach bloating and eating the Whole30 way cured your problem. Good for you!
HealthyinOK
But, what would I have been bloating from?
Emily
If you were eating dairy, grains, legumes, sugar, or alcohol before your W30, it could be one of them. One idea in the W30 is to learn how these different foods (that often cause people trouble) effect your body. It does sound like you now know that one or more of them was causing you trouble. Once your W30 is over, you can reintroduce them one at a time--experiment on yourself--and hopefully learn what was causing you trouble.
TheLazyCaveman
The swelling is likely cause by inflammation, which is the body's normal response to something it can't tolerate or feels it's allergic to. Swelling occurs to increase blood flow to damaged areas (like your gut) to help combat those pathogens. Removing the things you've had a problem with reduces that level of systemic inflammation, and reduces the swelling. Bloating occurs from the overproduction of gas from the bacteria in your intestines. Bacteria thrive on sugar and starch, and produce gas as a byproduct of natural metabolism. While the gas may not get turned into flatulence, it will cause your stomach to distend and give you that bloated feel. Again, removing foods that cause bacteria to overproduce gas reduces that bloating.

TheLazyCaveman
Oh, I forgot two more. Sugar and excess salt also cause water retention, so a diet that is naturally void of those will cause you to drop water weight and feel leaner too.
maddieaddie
If I have wheat (which only happens accidentally - like at a restaurant), I will gain 4-6 lbs. that night, and my belly will be visibly bigger and feel tight. It usually takes 4 days or so to go back to normal. It is definitely an inflammatory response. My skin will become quite dry, which lasts longer - like 3-4 weeks. If you are experiencing such a profound improvement this early on, then by the end of the Whole30 you may find other benefits - like improvements with dry skin, heat or cold tolerance, joint pain - the list goes on! KimJay
I, too, noticed that my stomach was flatter after 6 days. I'm now on day 12. Another big win for me is not needing antacids. Before I started Whole30, I had indigestion almost every day - antacids were my constant companion. I t dawned on me at the end of my first week that I had not needed to taked an antacid in days. Huge win!
rry
i had a similar experience. i started a program on my own, unaware that there was such a thing as the whole30. when i described it to a friend of mine, she said, it sounds like you're doing the whole30. it looked it up and indeed i was. so i've latched onto these message boards. that was 2.5 weeks ago. in a matter of a few days, my stomach went down about 1.5 inches. i couldn't believe it. i also lost about 5 pounds in those first few days. two weeks in (on monday of this week) i had a long planned event 4 days ago at which i had planned that i was going to eat dessert with my son. i did - i had the works, gluten, dairy, sugar, caffeine. an hour later my stomach started killing me. i could barely drive home. i spent tuesday, wednesday and thursday really sick to my stomach and other symptoms too. tuesday my stomach was back up the 1.5 inches. and now on friday i'm finally feeling well and my stomach is back down. my weight is down another 2 pounds beyond the original five. i never understood what people meant when they talked about feeling bloated. but that's because i was in perpetual bloat mode. as it turns out, i actually never knew what it meant to NOT be bloated, until now. xoxo

GFChris
I'm on day 12. I have been feeling great and the today I'm so bloated and feel miserable. Why does that happen? Without knowing what you've been eating and drinking, it's hard to provide you with some specific insight. Generally, it's related to how you ate pre-Whole30 and how it differs from how you're currently eating on your Whole30. Can you post 2-3 days worth of your food log in the Troubleshooting section? Include meals and any snacks, portion sizes and water consumption (although whether you're drinking sparkling or still water, as sparkling can cause bloat for some). With that information, folks here can give you feedback on possible tweaks.
