AllyB
This kind of falls under 'crazy stuff people say'. Someone sent me this link recently. (I think they sent it as a bit of a joke.) But it is an interesting view point! http://tinyurl.com/p5aa8h3
Administrators ladyshanny Posted April 20, 2015 Administrators Share Posted April 20, 2015 Orthorexia is neither a joke nor something that crazy people say. It is an obsession with perfection surrounding food and can be as paralyzing as anorexia, bulimia or any of the other "older" eating disorders. Whole30 encourages folks to be mindful and conscious of the foods that they are eating but when if it gets to the point of being obsessive or where a person's worth and value become intertwined with the foods that they are or are not choosing, that has become disordered and needs to be dealt with. Maggiedoll
..It's the Daily Mail. Take it about as seriously as the National Enquirer. Saying that orthorexia is the same as healthy eating is like saying that anorexia is the same as going on a diet. (And afaik, orthorexia as a [currently unofficial] diagnosis is usually limited to patients with other eating disorders. Its not unusial for somebody in treatment for anorexia, especially if it's not entirely voluntary treatment, to transfer their need to control food from eating little enough to eating only the "right" foods.) And its not necessarily what anybody [even the sufferer themself] would rationally consider healthy. Frequently it's organic/natural/etc.. but it can also be nothing but fruit. Or nothing but greek yogurt and organic oatmeal. Or only foods that are white. Or entirely arbitrary foods with no identifiable reason for the "pure" and "impure" designations. Eating disorders aren't known for being logical. "Pure" as designated by an eating disorder doesn't really have the same meaning. It would be like saying that somebody with ocd who scrubs their hands until they bleed is just being careful about germs. Since an intact epidermis is one of the major *protections* from infection, the scrubbing would make them more susceptible to infection, not less.
