Celebrating nothing with all the junk

I work in a tech company and it's May the 4th---so of course we have to celebrate this nerdy reference with pounds and pounds of fat, sugar, and wheat! There is a table 15 feet from my desk filled with cookies, donuts, and any other combination of chocolate and flour you can think of. Thankfully it's around the corner and I can't see it. It really does seem absurd when you think about it - any excuse you eat crap. Why do we do this to ourselves?

The world is full of breakrooms populated with people who don't and won't eat like we need to eat.   When you make your health a priority, your eyes open and you can see possibilities everywhere.

Sugar withdrawal is miserable.   It takes a strong commitment and declaration to one's self not to return to Groundhog Day.

Yep, I have to say, now that I'm at day 28 of my third W30, I'm totally ok with not eating any of it -- which would have blown my mind a year ago. Does it smell yummy? Yes. Am I totally looking forward to my kalua pork and veggies at lunch? Even more so!

My department at work is like this.  Today they're celebrating Star Wars day, tomorrow it's Cinco de Mayo - it's ridiculous!  I don't participate at all, I don't eat any of the food and I don't bring any to share.  This makes the rest of my team thinks I'm weird and antisocial, but I'm okay with that.

We have been conditioned by marketing to reward ourselves with food (or more accurately, with food-like substances).

You deserve that whipped cream covered chocolate shake (with a tiny amount of coffee in it!) JUST because it's afternoon!

You ate a salad today! Reward yourself with a cookie!

You went to work today! You've earned a glass of wine!

Even sadder, we've also been taught to punish ourselves for "bad" food intake afterwards. Ironically, the "punishment" is to eat perfectly delicious things like salads and vegetables and get out and be active (exercise).

It's so backwards. Just one of the reasons the Whole30 rules are set up so specifically, to help change these self-sabotaging habits.

THIS!  Especially the idea that if you have a bad day you have to be "comforted".  Bad days happen a lot, if a person learns no other coping mechanism for them than food or booze, that's a problem in my opinion.  I had a HORRID day yesterday and thought about going home and having a glass of wine (not on W30 at the moment) and then thought, "how does that help?!".  It doesn't.  All that helps is coming to work the next day and fixing the problems that I had.
