Hashimoto's / Adrenal Fatigue - weight loss

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I suffer from Hashimoto's, adrenal fatigue and low testosterone. I take desiccated thyroid for my thyroid and bio-identical hormones. I have not had much luck with this protocol and I know that I need to clean up my diet. I did eliminate all sugar (including fruit) from my diet about 6 months ago for several months and felt a lot better. Since then I stopped nursing my baby and have piled on weight despite not changing my diet or exercise regime. My question is for those suffering from Hashimoto's have they had weight loss results from the Whole30? I know that people with Hashimoto's can have a tough time losing weight. Additionally did those suffering from Hashimoto's follow the AIP diet in addition to Whole30? I feel pretty overwhelmed with the AIP diet in addition to Whole30 and would like to follow something that's sustainable for me for the duration. My main goal is feeling better but I am also feeling pretty down on my weight right now which is the reason for my question.

Thanks so much!

Hi, I've been diagnosed Hashimoto last July and was prescribed Euthyroid. Just started my first round of Whole30 on September 1st and I've decided not to follow the AIP this time around. I want to finish that first round and see if it helps resolve my symptoms (fatigue, weight gain) before I give the AIP a try.

Sorry, just saw your reply!

To be honest, up until day 20, I felt tired all the time: no energy to go to the gym whatsoever. On day 20, it's like someone turned a switch on! My energy came back! I feel great! Good luck to you!

What is AIP? I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's and am starting my Whole30 tomorrow.

The AIP is the AutoImmune Protocol.

If you've not completed a Whole30 before, we recommend doing a Whole30 first and then moving on to AIP if you think you need to, some people find the Whole30 makes enough of an improvement and they don't need the AIP.

The AIP is like the Whole30, it's diagnostic, to help you identify foods which are making you feel less healthy, but it's a lot more restrictive as it aims to remove things that can be triggers with AutoImmune (inflammation). Reintroductions then help you identify the things which make you feel less well.

Thank you for the info. This is my second full W30. When I did my first one I didn't have Hashimoto's. I was diagnosed with it right before Thanksgiving. I am doing great this time around. I have noticed huge changes in energy. I can actually make it through a day of teaching and not feel like I want to take a nap during afternoon small groups. I still have to keep my workouts short if I am doing any weights, but a full hour of hot yoga is envigorating. Prior to my diagnosis, I had to stop running due to an injury. I know it will take time, but I want to start running again with the goal of running another half by this time next year. I hike and backpack in the back country here in Central Washington. I'm not giving that up either. Hashimoto's is not going to keep me from doing what I want. My goal is 6 months W30 to let my body heal, then I'll start reintroducing a few things, if I feel like I want to. We will see.

Hi all,

I am on day 23 of my Whole30, and I have Hashimoto's as well.  I felt amazing and energized for about a week of the program (from day 7 to day 14, approximately), but honestly, the past 10 days have been awful.  I thought eating like this would really increase my energy levels, but I have felt just as tired and weak as when I was not doing the Whole30.  Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for how to proceed after the 30 days? Should I try a more AIP approach and see if that helps? I would really love not to feel fatigued all the time.  Thanks in advance for any wisdom!

Best,

Melissa

Hi, Melissa. It would help us give you more feedback if you could give us more specifics. Could you post a couple of days' worth of meals (including approximate portion sizes), water intake, exercise, and sleep?

It's really up to you what you want to do after your Whole30. You could just keep going with it for a while and see if you get any more results -- some people do take longer than 30 days to notice major changes. Or you could start the AIP if you feel that it's doable for you at this point, to see if it will help. It's kind of up to you -- if you haven't really researched much about the AIP yet, you should probably at least read through the links posted above and learn a little more about what it would entail.

Hi Shannon,

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately, I have let exercise slip a bit the past couple weeks.  I have been jogging/walking 2 times per week for about 45 minutes but would like to do closer to 4 times per week.  I don't track my water intake that closely, but I would guess I drink around 2 liters per day.  I aim to get 7.5-8.5 hours of sleep per night, but typically probably get closer to 7.

In terms of meals, for breakfast I generally eat two eggs and either a small portion of fruit or half an avocado.  For lunch, I have been eating almond meal chicken tenders (~1.5 fist sizes) with broccoli and carrots (~2 cups), and sometimes add a handful of cashews or almonds.  For dinner, I have been eating turkey burgers with approved mayo, a few small red potatoes, and some kale sauteed in coconut oil with yellow raisins.

Thank you in advance for any feedback,

Melissa
