Where do you get your bones?

I'm thinking about venturing into making some bone broth this weekend but I'm not sure where to get the bones. Do you just ask at the meat counter if they have any?

I have a fabulous butcher who sources pastured meats from local farms. I get my bones from him. 

 

You can try the meat counter, but may have better luck with a butcher shop.

+1 on the local butcher. I pay for my pork and beef bones but he gives me chicken racks and game bones for free.

i bought my first batch at my local grocery store -- they were just marrow bones and i didn't get very good results even though i followed the recipe in the book to the letter. i just found a local butcher that gets great reviews on yelp about a half hour from me, so in the next day or so i'm going to go to them and get the real deal.

I keep the bones from my roast chickens and chicken wings and put them in the freezer until I have enough of a batch for broth.

 

The jointy bones (like chicken wings) will make more jiggly broth, but the non-jiggly kind is good for you too.

I bought my bones from the butcher at Whole Foods, I told him I was making bone broth and he gave me the best beef bones for that, and pointers for the best broth.  He also sawed them up so they would fit in my crock pot.

I get them at Whole Foods, too. They often have them bagged and labeled as bones for broth.
