roadtrip ideas!

so in a few weeks i am helping my sister move from michigan to california. i am flying from california to chicago where she is picking me up and then we're driving the rest of the way together. i just started my 3rd round of whole30 and i am trying to think of what i can pack and eat that'll keep me full and have enough energy to help her drive. the sucky thing is that since i'm flying out, i won't be able to make things at home first and pack them. so we're going to have to stop at a grocery store and pick me up some stuff and i won't be able to cook anything since we'll be in the car.

any ideas? i am already kinda panicking because i know when i eat cold food all day i don't feel as full and i just feel constantly hungry all day. stopping to go out to eat is kinda unlikely. since we'll be driving 12-14 hour days we won't have time to sit down at a restaurant for an hour and get a steak or burger without a bun or something. fast food is probably the only thing we'll have time for.

thanks!

There's all kinds of Whole 30 compliant jerky.  Have-jerky-will-travel.  It's portable and fits anywhere.   It's fast.  Jerky, tuna/salmon packs and a smidge of nuts...because this is a road trip but you can't eat them all at once.  Roasted vegetables travel well.  You can eat them out of a small cooler.  Make some individual servings.

Make servings of green and black olives, too.

Every gas station, even the small ones carry hard boiled eggs.   Mustard packs.

Now then, if you have nothing left, zip, nadda and you must go through a drive-thru....look for some Maw N Paw places with good burgers, chicken.  Throw the bun away and skin off chicken (dipped in flour).  You have to eat and don't panic.   Do the best with what you have.

Any of those options trump sports drinks, smoothies, bars and packaged snacks.

You probably have a bit of an idea of your travel route, have a look along there for likely stopping places and plan some places to eat good food, planning will make it a lot easier. You've got a few weeks, so take advantage of them and research some good stops along the way. Steak is often a good option as it can be cooked without oil and it's quite satisfying. I'd try for one good meal a day and have cold meals for the rest if you want to minimize your stop time.

For travel, things like boiled eggs (some places sell them already boiled), cans of tuna (get the ring pull kind), some lara bars, little packets of compliant nut butter, bananas, avocado etc. Don't worry so much about the template, just stick with compliant stuff. Fat is important so make sure you have some that will keep (like a nut butter or coconut butter). Some little containers might help you eat in the car too and some cutlery.

You might want to have a look over this thread: http://forum.whole30.com/topic/24656-need-to-carry-lunch-and-dinnerin-my-purse-all-day/

There's lots of others on portable things but you'll need to do some research on what's available along your route.

I wouldn't recommend just taking the buns off burgers.

If you have any problems with gluten you could spend a bunch of your trip with cramps or in the bathroom :o or be driving with brain fog and that is a bad idea!

Make sure when you're driving long distance you take decent breaks so you arrive in one piece :)

Taking this dilemma another step...

I complete my Whole 30 on February 10, and we're leaving for a ten-day road trip in a sports car (no room for anything but us and our suitcase) on the 18th.  I won't be able to do a proper reintroduction because of that, and am going to be as mindful about what I eat as I can.  I'm confident that I'll be able to find lunches and dinners that are reasonably compliant, but am very concerned about breakfast.  I want to continue to eat as close to within an hour of rising as I can, because the one thing I don't want to do is return to my habit of snacking between meals (even if those snacks are healthy ones). I'm fairly certain I'm going to have to resort to fast food scrambled eggs (who knows exactly what is in those??), and a salad if I can find one (maybe at a larger gas station).  Any other breakfast ideas?

In the absence of any suggestions, I ordered some Epic bars to supplement what I'm able to find in a restaurant, or in the hotels where we stop for the night.  Hampton Inn does have a breakfast each morning that always has some type of egg preparation, usually along with bacon or sausage and sometimes hash browned potatoes.  I wouldn't even begin to imagine that those things would be Whole 30 compliant, but since I'll be finished with my W30 by then (today is my last day!), a small amount of dairy or sugar won't be the end of the world.
