After a year I'm doing another Whole30 Starting January 12. My first W30 was January 2015, and was quite successful. I was able to stay fit and maintain my ideal body weight for most of the year by staying off of sugar and flour. I added some non-compliant whole foods back in without issue. HOWEVER, Holidays 2015 was a sugar free-for-all and I packed on 10 lbs, not to mention that my sleep quality has suffered and I've fallen out of shape. I'm using W30 to kick-start another year of healthy eating habits.

My goal in life is to maintain general health. I grew up seeing my mother do roller coaster dieting and never reach sustainable weight management methods. Weight loss as a goal is so self-destructive since it leaves you hanging after you reach your goal. The Whole30 is promising in this regard since the creators emphasize health first: healthy body composition will always follow good eating and exercise habits. W30 establishes a good basis from which to move forward. I don't need processed sugar, and I don't need treats and snacks. After 30 days I will likely return organic corn, rice, and beans to my diet, because those foods are whole foods. I don't care if they are higher in carbs, they are whole and I will have a better chance at success if I expand my options of whole food products. Paleo food is mostly compliant, and I believe the paleo diet is okay, but I personally don't agree with the elimination of any whole food in the long term. For 30 days, no problem.

To anyone doing Whole30 for the first time, stick with it. It's not that hard, and although you will feel out of whack sometimes, you will likely also feel energetic and sharp at the same time. Your body composition will improve even if you don't lose much weight. If you are motivated to exercise during the month you will have additional benefits.

Thank you for the encouragement. I'm starting tomorrow, as well!

Welcome - I hope your first day is successful. Don't be shy about portion size; eat enough that you aren't hungry between meals. This morning I ate 4 eggs over steamed chard and fried sweet potato medallions. I started a crock pot when I got home from work yesterday so I have lunch and dinner for today. If you don't have a crock pot, get one. They are the biggest time saver when trying to eat real food regularly.

Hello, I actually started yesterday, but beginning again because I accidentally drank some artificial sweetener yesterday! My goals are to cure my fibromyalgia, lose weight so I can have my final breast surgery done (diagnosed April 2013), prevent future breast cancer, and have the energy and health to feel good and enjoy my life, raise my children, bless my family and friends, and serve my Creator.

Hello. This is my second whole 30 too (first one back in June). I kept up my good habits for a couple months then fell off from there. Ready for round two!

Welcome back! I'm hoping to stick to it longer this go around. As mentioned in my opening paragraph, I believe it's quite doable if only whole foods are re-inserted into my diet plan after the 30 days. I've learned that "moderation" is a great concept, but not a very realistic one. I don't know anybody who truly moderates. For me it's best to just do without certain things, and I don't consider it suffering. I'd rather feel and look healthy. Good luck on your W30 experience.

I will be curious to know how your experience affects the FM. My former wife is suffering from fibro and relies too much on medication that ultimately brings about negative side affects. I believe diet and exercise can do a lot to offset need for medication. Cheers.

I'm starting my 2nd Whole30 today as well, my first one was last June. I've had a few false starts since then but really want to stay committed this time. I've just got to make it past the first week and then I know it gets easier.....the last few times I've only made it through 4-5 days before the headaches and sluggishness got the best of me.

Anything you all are going to do differently this time?

. . . Anything you all are going to do differently this time?

Last time I did fairly well - I never really struggled with cravings, but I had some trouble sleeping and eating such a limited diet. This time, as last time, I will make exercise a daily part of my experience since exercise tends to make you crave healthier food (and I need to be more fit). When done I plan to be realistic and introduce only whole foods, but stay away from processed. I managed to do that for the most part after my last W30, but eventually I was eating pizza and burgers again by the end of year. I also plan to take an organic whole food multi-vitamin each day as well as iron in hopes of better energy. How about you, misc_tara? Anything new this time around?

Hi everyone!  My name is Denise and it's my first time doing whole 30!  I've been wanting to try it for over a year, but never had the guts to go for it.  I now have a couple friends who started it so I joined in.  I consider myself to be a pretty healthy eater, but really over-indulged over the holidays and my need for sugar is out of control.  Also, I had surgery 3 weeks ago on my hip and sciatic nerve for chronic pain I've had for over 1 1/2 years, and am hoping the whole 30 will help with the healing process and take down some of the inflammation in my body.  I technically started Sunday (1/10), but was hoping to be part of the group! Good luck to everybody!

Good luck to you, Instrumentofpeace. I know how it feels to have to restart. Last time I did a Whole30, I accidentally used some Chipotle peppers and didn't read the label well enough. Learned a lesson there! Welcome!

. . . my need for sugar is out of control.  . .

Welcome Denise. If you already eat fairly well this will be a piece of cake (sorry for the pun). For sugar cravings I keep dried fruit around, with dates packing the biggest punch when going through withdrawals, but this time around I will be limiting intake. I did my first one a year ago and I couldn't wait to make the 30 day milestone, but when I finally reached it I kept going for another 15 days, so it really does get easier and you'll want to keep feeling good and healthy when done. I hope you see results with the inflammation.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. I tried to convince many to join me with no luck, so am thankful for a support group! I have felt a bit achy and hungry today. I'm trying to get ahead of the game with my food planning, but still working on it. I do have tons of healthy groceries in the house, though! About to try the spaghetti squash recipe from the meal plan in the Whole 30 book, day 1.

Hi everyone! dfox was nice enough to reply to a post I made and invited me to join this group of 1-12-2016 starters. I am a sugar addict with Celiac Disease (diagnosed 3 years ago, suffered from symptoms for about 10 years prior to diagnosis). I was quite happy to find this "diet" because it doesn't involve gluten or starving yourself!

I hope by doing the Whole30 (as well as continuing to exercise), I'll lose a few pounds and a couple inches. I have a pretty busy schedule so i try to squeeze in exercise as best I can (Jazzercise class on weekdays after work, 2 mile walk during lunch break, and running where I can squeeze it in on weekends), so changing my eating habits is really the only thing I'm able to do since I can't fit anymore exercise in my day.

I actually started this on Monday but found out I wasn't doing it quite right so I'm starting over today, but would still like to tag along with this group if that's ok? But I am on my 3rd day without sugar and I'm so excited about that! Yesterday I was imagining dipping a stick of butter in sugar and eating it (I've never done that before nor have I had the urge to until yesterday), and I was so close to putting sugar in my tea after that but I pushed through and made it without giving in! :-) I figure that if I was able to give up gluten (something I absolutely looooooved and ate constantly), I should be able to give up sugar for 30 days (and hopefully only having small quantities of it after). :-)

I was so close to putting sugar in my tea . . .

Hi Mitso, welcome to the discussion. The cravings get weird. Last time I did this I was craving marshmallows - something I normally detest. Try coconut milk from the can, the thick stuff, in your tea. It serves as a creamer as well as a hit of sugar, and it is fully W30 compliant. I am also active: I just started doing a body-flex class tues/thurs and I run Mon, Wed, Fri, & Sat. I am also really busy, so I now get up at 5:00 am for my exercise classes and running. I've learned that I just can't be consistent when I do it after work. There's always an interruption. As far as W30 and exercise, as your body adapts to using fat for energy you will likely notice your energy feeling sapped. Just push through. It get's better, but not overnight. I went for a run this morning and my legs felt like lead - felt like I was running up hill the whole time. Although I officially started yesterday, I, too, was off sugar over the weekend. So I think it's the lack of sugar that affects the lack of energy. I eat dates, apples, sweet potatoes, etc, but they aren't the same as refined sugar for quick release energy.

I am starting my first Whole 30 today...thanks for the tip about the crockpot!  After spending over an hour in the kitchen last night preparing for the first couple of days, I can see it will be very handy!

Yeah, I've been meaning to try that. I drink black tea everyday but can't seem to get used to it without milk and sugar. I tried almond milk and wasn't a fan, but I keep meaning to bring a can of coconut milk to work to give it a shot. Maybe tomorrow.

I wish I could exercise before work, but I already wake up at 4:30am just to get ready and go to work and by the time I get home from work, I get ready and go to  jazzercise, then when I get home I just barely have enough time to eat and go to bed (I hate eating right before bed but I just don't have time mon-thurs to fit dinner in any earlier). I've thought about giving up some sleep (which I barely get 8 hours as it is) to wake up earlier and run, but my neighborhood is very dark and there are some really scary drivers here, I'm just too nervous to run in the dark (no matter how many lights or reflective gear I have).

I've been trying to get a treadmill desk at work for the lass few years but my boss just wont go for it. I'm close to getting him to agree to a standing desk, so that's a step in the right direction! I'm tired of sitting for 10+ hours a day. I try to take mini breaks every hour to stretch my legs but I often get too busy or just forget. But I'm going to try harder! :-) It's time to get back in shape!!! I'm excited!

Thanks for the quick release energy tips, I live in a big date town so it should be real easy for me to buy dates (wow, that just doesn't sound right...).

So, I just saw this video for Deviled Potato Bites and was wondering if this would be compliant? I know chickpeas are not so I would look for something to replace those, and I would have to find a Dijon mustard that was compliant, but are the rest of the ingredients ok?
small yellow potatoes
chickpeas- 15 oz. can (need substitute)

lemon juice- 1 Tbsp.
garlic powder- 1 Tbsp.
dijon mustard- 1 tsp (or maybe regular, compliant mustard?)
turmeric- 1 tsp
tahini- 2 Tbsp.
water- 2 Tbsp. (add more as needed for a creamier texture)
salt- to taste
pepper-to taste

Here's the video if you're interested:

I saw this video the other day and thought it looked good too! I wander if it would hold together without the chickpeas though, it might be runny? I use Gulden’s spicy brown mustard and it’s compliant.

Honestly, the very best way to kill cravings off is to starve them.  Don't give them "compliant" sugar when they are freaking out.  If you really can't distract yourself and you're not legitimately hungry (ie, you could happily eat steamed fish & broccoli), then eat fat.  Olives are great here because they are the polar opposite of sweets!
