Hello Whole30-land!

 

Last year, I completed my first successful Whole30 during Lent. It turns out Lent is nearly a perfect fit with the Whole30, because 30 days of Whole30 + 10 days of reintroductions = 40 days of Lent!

 

I'd like to start a thread where folks who are interested in doing WholeLent can find each other & start prepping. Who's in?

 

BTW - last year's group was not highly religious. Some folks were, but many were not. ALL are welcome.

You must have been reading my mind. I just posted on Facebook that I was going to tackle Whole 30 for Lent and I'm in the process of not forming a group but building a Facebook page to chronicle the event - I'm delighted that you are doing this too - we can cross pollinate!!

I'm glad to find this.  I'll be doing my first Whole30 for Lent and it will be nice to have a group to follow it with.  

 

I just checked out "The Whole30 Cookbook" from the Library and am waiting on "It Starts With Food."  I'm obsessively checking out this site and have started stock piling non-perishables to prepare.  

 

I wasn't going to drag my family into this, but my daughter got a hold of the cookbook last night and made several meal requests, so while they won't be strictly following, it looks like there will be a healthy eating trickle down of sorts which should be fun!

Hi, I just finished the January Whole30, but didn't get the results I'd hoped for so decided to continue with some extra restrictions. I plan to cut out nightshades, nuts and coffee - and some prescription meds I think are actually making me worse. I'd love to join in with this group - that will give 10 days to taper off caffeine! Can anyone suggest a good coffee substitute? I've got a pantry full of teas, but don't particularly care for any of them - especially with no sugar/sweetener.

Also, what type of goals are y'all setting for your Whole30? The only one I had in January was to finish. This time I want to set goals including exercise, increasing veggie intake and doing better at consistently following the meal template.

Note that caffeine is allowed on a Whole30.

I'm thinking of going off coffee to see if it might be contributing to my health issues. Plus, the only thing I really craved during my January Whole 30 was coffee with heavy cream and sugar. I've been drinking it bulletproof style with ghee and coconut oil and even that seems to make my throat feel itchy. I have fibromyalgia and one thing I read suggested eliminating caffeine could help reduce symptoms. I've also been thinking about trying the autoimmune protocol which does eliminate coffee.

There ARE 'Whole30 cookbooks' out there but they are not endorsed or written by the Hartwigs so if you've ordered something other than the one linked above, be very sure you're reading ingredients and not taking the recipes for face value as there are a LOT of imposters out there. And that's not to say that there aren't good recipes and books out there that do have Whole30 compliant recipes, because there are a LOT, but please be careful with throwing a ton of trust into something that calls itself Whole30 if it's not got Dallas and Melissa Hartwig's name on it. :)

If you're planning on removing prescribed prescription meds, please speak with your doctor before you do so. Many meds have withdrawl complications that can be very dangerous so please be careful and do so with your doctor's blessing. If you are having trouble explaining this to your doctor, just tell him/her that you are eating whole foods and no processed foods and that you want to see if that will help with whatever the condition that the meds are for.

Hi SugarcubeOD, thanks, that's good advice! The meds I want to eliminate are pain meds/muscle relaxes that I only take on an as needed basis. I'm wanting to cut them out as I've noticed the more I take the worse I seem to feel. My only daily med is for hypothyroidism and I take a version that I have checked to ensure doesn't contain corn, gluten, etc. so I'm not changing anything there. I'm looking for a functional medicine doctor who takes a more holistic approach to medicine instead of just writing prescriptions, but none of the ones I've found locally take insurance and cost too much to pay out of pocket.

Ahh, okay well if they're meds you take at your own judgement, then I'd say it would be pretty reasonable to try and remove them but if you find that you're in too much pain, please don't suffer. Pain meds and muscle relaxants can have a rebound effect, so you're right, they might be making you feel worse. You may consider trying to cut the tablet in half if you can or even try an over the counter like advil or Robax and see if that is sufficient instead of the prescription meds which must be a heck of a lot stronger than OTC.

This is the one by the Hartwig's and I've already devoured Parts 1-3!  I have it checked out of the library but I might actually go out and buy this one.  It is terrific!  I have a pretty extensive shopping list ready for grocery day.

 

I can hardly wait for next Wednesday to get here! Though I am planning a Fat Tuesday trip to get my favorite Beer Battered Onion Rings at a local bar as a last hurrah.

I was trying to figure out when to start another whole30. This will be my 3rd round, R1-Feb 2014, R2-Feb2015. Looks like February is the month for me to start. Lent is the perfect timing :)

 

Looking forward t connecting with others here and on facebook. Last year I created a private facebook group. I see someone has started a page, any interest in having a private group in addition to the page?  

 

I also started an instagram to share my food/experiences. I will do that again this year. Follow me @tri4health

I just completed my first Whole 30 yesterday (I still CANNOT believe I actually did it). I saw the Whole Lent idea and think it is great! I plan on using this week just to test out non-gluten grains and dairy but will be ready to dive in again for Lent. I am excited to do it with all of you!

i am so excited that a group will be starting a Whole 30 at the beginning of Lent. I was considering it but now that I have found a group I'm all in!

 

I did my first Whole 30 last October and was successful. But the reintroduction brought back some bad eating habits and the holidays didn't help. So now I am ready to do this again and make these changes stick for good. I really liked being part of the Forum last year. I think it really helped me stay on track and be accountable. 

 

abrown5540 I checked out your Facebook page last night and I am going to be following that along with this thread. I think all the support will be really helpful. Thank you all for starting this.

Well, I think I finally have an idea why my results for the January Whole 30 weren't as good as the partial Whole 30 I did over the summer. Histamine intolerance! Histamine builds up in leftovers and I have been batch cooking on the weekends and eating leftovers all week. During the summer I wasn't working and had time to cook meals fresh each day. Plus, some of my staple foods are naturally higher in histamine. I had wondered in the past why I would react to a particular food one day, yet on another day could eat it with no problems. Apparently with histamine intolerance you will only react to a food if histamine has built up in your system past your particular histamine threshold. I frequently have histamine related reactions after eating, but never tested positive for any food allergies. So anyway, I'm researching low histamine diets as well as supplements that can help the body better process histamine. I printed off the low histamine Whole 30 shopping list and am planning to use it to use it when we start next week. I really hope this is my missing piece - I can't wait to start feeling better! I just have to figure out how to fix my meals fresh each day instead of batch cooking on the weekend - ugh!

Okay guys I'm getting overwhelmed. I'm looking at everything I should do to prep for next week but I am literally busy every single day until then. Suggestions for how to get started next week without breaking this right away due to lack of time to prep? Any suggestions please!
