What to get at Trader Joe's? Canadian travelling to US!

Hi all!

So, I will be travelling to Arizona to visit my parents in February (a couple of weeks after I finish my first Whole30), and I am SUPER excited to bring back a few of the products I have been hearing so much about, to make my life a little easier as I continue my Whole30-inspired lifestyle.  We don't have Trader Joe's or Whole Foods where I live and it seems like there are lots of compliant options there.

What are some of your favourite things to get at Trader Joe's?  Or Whole Foods?  I am looking for (a) options to cook for/with my parents while I'm there, and (B) a few of the best salad dressings, condiments, etc to come back in my suitcase with me.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here's a few links to a blog and thread on the forum.

Please be sure to read all the labels even if you see something that was mentioned on here. Ingredients change from region to region and over time, so do your due diligence :).

Also, those plantain chips that you'll hear mentioned... nope, not compliant ;)

Their plantain chips are not compliant but the plantain nacho recipe in Well Fed 2 is?

Commercially prepared chips and fries are not compliant, nor is deep frying your own.

Oven baked slices of plantain/ potato/ sweet potato/ whatever vegetable you care to think of is fine.

That's what the Trader Joe's plantain chips ARE. They are oven roasted. Not fried.

Commercially prepared chips are not compliant no matter how they're made.

The idea is that with the Wellfed ones, you're taking a vegetable and preparing it to eat, not opening a package...

They just started selling TJ's brand of coconut milk. I also buy Chili Lime Chicken Burgers there as well (not sure if you have the ability to keep them frozen through travel).

Whole Foods--compliant bacon if they have it, EPIC bars, La Croix waters.

Yup. The crunch factor difference in homemade vs. commercially prepared makes the latter food without brakes, too.

I buy bags of cruciferous crunch, broccoli slaw and shaved brussel sprouts at TJ's and saute that with my eggs in the morning.  I'm sure it's way more expensive prepared this way, but I have kids and work full time and need easy breakfasts, so it's worth it to me :)

I go to Trader Joe's for produce and some prepared vegetables/salads (I LOVE their peeled garlic), grass fed beef and other meats and poultry, frozen vegetables, and cheap staples. And flowers! None of these, alas, travel well! Trader Joe's and my local independent market ("Fine food our hobby since 1920") are my favorite places to shop. They also have a great selection of nuts (I especially like their freeze dried almonds and cashews).

I like the spicy Italian chicken sausage, the applegate hot dogs, coconut cream, coconut milk, frozen cilantro lime chicken burgers, frozen grass feed beef burgers, and I hear the kerrygold butter is good for making ghee.  The green salsa is good with pork.  In fact, there are precooked pork carnitas that are good in a pinch.  Nuts are good, too.

Honestly, I can't think of a sauce/dressing at TJ that is compliant.  There are some good sauces (when not on Whole 30, I love the sriracha bbq sauce), but there are lots of hidden sugars.

At Whole Foods, I get dried cranberries that are made without sugar to put in a brussel sprouts dish.  I also get Tessame's dressing, but our Whole Foods does not carry the ketchup or any Whole 30 bbq.  :(

Trader Joe's is the only place near me I can find hazelnuts year-round. (Well, I haven't checked Whole Foods, actually.) The prices on all their nuts are the best in my area, actually, and the one near me has at least one variety of compliant almond butter. They also have the best prices around me on grass-fed beef (freezer section).

 Need to try that burger!

When I go to TJ I get their coconut oil, rice vinegar, sesame oil.

Also, if you know in advance - you should check out thrivemarket.com. before I went to my niece's wedding in the states later year - I ordered a year supply of Red Boat Fish sauce and Coconut Amino at greatly discounted prices. Being away from Canada for more than 48 hours allows you to bring CAD $800 duty free. I joined the Thrive Market for their trial period ten cancelled because theyou do not ship to Canada. I had the oder shipped to my sister in law in MD and drove it back with me. Check them out - their prices are less than Amazon.
