Meal timing question, toddler wrangling edition

Hello all,

I will be starting my first Whole30 on February 1st, so apologies for the n00b question, but I'm trying to figure out if I need to plan on 3 or 4 meals in a day given my schedule. The eating within an hour of wakeup thing is the toughest. Right now my day looks like this:

5:15 or earlier wakeup when husband's alarm goes off, futz around on my phone while husband showers

5:45 actually get out of bed, get ready for the day

6/6:30 toddler wakes up, I get her ready for the day

6:30/6:45, sometimes as late as 7... breakfast

7:30 leave for the day

I usually eat a big snack around 10:30 or 11 (4-4.5 hrs after breakfast) and lunch at 1 or 1:30 (only 2.5-3 hrs after my snack)

Get home from work around 5:45 (the most I walk on the way home is a mile, usually it's much less than that)

Dinner between 6 and 6:15. Can't move dinner because it's our only family time, and it's about 4 hrs before I go to bed, so that timing feels right to me - it's the other 2 or 3 meals I need to figure out.

I walk 3 miles to work (including carrying my 25# kid the first 3/4 mile to daycare dropoff), which I could perhaps treat as a workout and do pre/post snacks? Early breakfast is tricky as toddler wakeup time is wildly variable, and most days I only have a few minutes to get myself ready in peace before she wakes up. Anyway, any suggestions you could offer would be most appreciated.

Your meal timing actually looks fine.  Make sure that 1030 "snack" is a mini-meal of at least two of the three macros (eg, protein and fat or protein and veggies).

On a scheduling note, I would use that 30 minutes of "phone futzing" to get ready myself so that I wasn't starting the day trying to catch up.  :)

Thanks, Ladyshanny. Alas, we have just the one bathroom, so I have to wait for hubs to shower before I can get in there. I shower at night but still need 10 minutes for tooth brushing and face washing! If you could make *him* get up when his alarm goes off, that would be ideal :-p

Right now my meals/snacks are non compliant (though I am trying not to binge too much before starting W30) but I do wake up hungry, it's just that I don't have time to eat until later! I know it's a hormone thing, but does it matter more for the time you wake up or the time you get up and start moving? Sometimes I wake up as early as 4:30 and just lie there hoping to fall asleep again before his alarm goes off. Insomnia is one of the things I'm hoping to improve with W30!

Can you wander into the kitchen and eat your breakfast while he is in the shower? You could always keep a towel and your toothbrush in a drawer and do your face washing and tooth brushing in the kitchen.

Another idea: Get the man a Fitbit -- wakes the wearer with just vibrations, so bedmates don't have to suffer through the alarm!

But you do have time to eat, you have from 5:15 until 5:45 to eat!  :)  You just have to want to eat more than you want to lay in bed.  ;)

Eating within an hour of waking is one of those things that is critical to getting your hormones in line.  Cortisol is a hormone that is regulated in this way (and is misregulated in SO many people in the regular world).  Cortisol being high in the morning and lowering as the day goes on will be one way to help tackle your insomnia.  If you're awake anyway, instead of laying there being irritated about the alarm/hubby situation, claim that time as your own personal time to do something good for yourself.

I have a fitbit, but he is totally uninterested, alas! I usually wake up at 5 to pee, anyway, and then wish I could go back to sleep.

Blaaarggghh. The laying in bed is SO DELICIOUS though!  ;)
