Starting Feb 11th

Heard about this from a friend that was taking part and looking forward to trying it ourselves (me and the husband).  We have been preparing for a couple weeks now slowly trying to cut out all the grains and dairy we eat to clear the fridge and pantry. Tomorrow will be the first official day.  Anything I have left that is storable will go into hiding and everything else is getting purged today.  We travel for work and often find ourselves in towns that don't have the best produce or meats.   I will let you all know how finding ingredients turns out :-)  Our biggest take home at this point is to remove the junk that we turn to on a daily basis and learning how to think outside the sandwich and chicken/rice stir fry box and how I am going to miss my yogurt! 

 

I need to grocery shop tomorrow for the rest of the week. I am having some trouble tying to be creative for my husbands lunches. He works 6 days a week doing powerline construction so has no access to microwave and is often missing any kind of official lunch time - he just chows and moves on.  Any suggestions for me when planning meals?  I was thinking lots of soups in thermos and some lettuce wraps; he complains salad doesn't stick with him well.

. I am having some trouble tying to be creative for my husbands lunches. He works 6 days a week doing powerline construction so has no access to microwave and is often missing any kind of official lunch time - he just chows and moves on.  Any suggestions for me when planning meals?  I was thinking lots of soups in thermos and some lettuce wraps; he complains salad doesn't stick with him well. 

 

 

You could try doing a 'breakfast for lunch' type thing and giving him frittata or egg/meat muffins... those are great cold, easily hand holdable and hearty... combined with a thermos of soup and some olives, that would work well maybe?

Sandwich fillings in lettuce wraps would work... chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad (all with home made mayo of course), baked meatballs with chopped veggies and ranch dressing dip (home made).

You could try googling 'whole 30 brown bag lunch' or whole30 picnic lunch for some good threads on this type of lunch scenario.

So, instead of leafy green salads, go for potato salad, broccoli salad, or other chunky type salads like that with more substantial vegetables. Here's some good ones, and that site has a ton of other ones, mostly W30 compliant. There are many cooked vegetables I don't mind eating cold, so talk to him about what he'd be okay with -- Personally, I'm okay with leftover green beans cold, or broccoli, or cauliflower, or sweet potatoes or potatoes, but I understand not everyone is. Soup in a thermos is great, but it can be hard to be sure each serving has enough protein in it. Things like meatballs, salmon cakes, tuna cakes, meat loaf, deviled eggs (or just hard boiled eggs, and include a container of mayo or guacamole for him to dip them in or top them with), or even chicken can be eaten cold.

Welcome! I'm starting tomorrow, too!

 

Just make sure to really read labels closely! I saw a suggestion of mixed tuna and avocado (with lime juice) served in celery stalks in the book. So I went to the store tonight to buy said items for lunch tomorrow. But I had NO idea that most (almost all, actually) tuna contains soy! Such a rude awakening. So even if you think a food is fine because you read in the book that you can have it, READ THOSE LABELS! :)
