My sister wants to change her diet and asked for my help...

Hi everyone! I would love your feedback.

My sister asked me to help her with her diet. And while I am thrilled that my sister asked me for help, I am not sure where to begin...

Here is the back story: she is determined to get her health back and make major changes in her diet. She feels like God has given her a second chance - she almost didn't make it - and she wants to make the most out of the rest of her life (she is 65 and recently retired).

She was really sick and just came home from the hospital (double pneumonia and flu) yesterday. She is really weak as she was knocked out and on a ventilator for many days. She has already lost 24 pounds and is over most of her cravings as she didn't eat for 10 days. She still has about 100 pounds to lose and was going to return to Weight Watchers before she ended up in the hospital. And now, thanks to her doctor, she is seriously considering Paleo. So she asked me for my help. Yay!!!

I told her about the Whole30, and as foreign as it all sounds to her, I believe she is willing to do it. Her husband will be doing the cooking for awhile, and just did the shopping for 2 weeks - lots of low fat items and fruit - so I told her to get her strength back, go easy on the fruit, and stay away from sugar and grains for now. She is already shunning "obvious" sugars, and today, after having bread this morning, she felt sick to her stomach. And then she told me, I won't be eating that again! She also said that healthy food looks good now, and the things she used to eat don't. Another win :)

Since her physical rehabilitation will be at least a couple of weeks, I thought I would ease her into the Whole30 with books and possibly some internet resources. I am going to gift her the Whole30 book - I chose that over It Starts with Food as she's not science-y. I am also going to lend her Well Fed for the weekly cookup and hot plates sections. When she is ready, I intend to do a cookup with her and her husband one weekend. I think he is on-board as far as helping her. Don't know if he will join her 100% though...

Do you have other ideas or suggestions to ease her into this lifestyle considering her current health?

And if any of you have come from a Weight Watchers background and have experienced success with the Whole30, I would appreciate sharing your wisdom and experiences with her.

Thank you for reading this and any and all replies / resources.

I think you sound like the BEST sister.

What about some gifts/resources for those days she's tempted to throw in the towel? An adult coloring book for whimsy, a stress ball for "kill all the things," an offer to do pedicures together rather than go to lunch? Maybe scrounge up some podcasts from Whole30-ers?

You could also help her come up with a goal list, or write a letter to her future self . . . .

Regardless, I think you're super-helpful.

Theres actually a website called www.futureme.org and you can write a letter to your future self and set the date for delivery and then it goes into a vault and gets sent out to you on the day you chose... it's actually very cool!
