Sweet Potato Side Dishes that aren't butter/cinnamon?

Hey all!! So I am going to dinner at my mom's next weekend and she requested a sweet potato dish because I used to always make an awesome casserole with butter, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, and butter-roasted pecans baked onto the top. It's easy to keep compliant, but I'm looking for something a little different this time. I found a recipe that uses chopped roasted potatoes and apples mixed in with some pecans and raisins and similar spices, but I thought I would ask you guys if you have any ideas! Hot, cold, savory, sweet, anything would work! It's a side for pulled pork, so I was thinking even a cold salad might be good. Anyone have any recipes they love? Thanks so much!! :)

It's not really a recipe, just a different way of seasoning them, but I like to cut sweet potatoes into bite-size chunks (or really, whatever size you'd usually use when roasting them -- fry-shaped, or spiralized, or whatever), toss them with oil or ghee and salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder. It's a little more savory than most of the cinnamon-based sweet potato recipes. These are good dipped in mayo, or just on their own.

 

You can also make the velvety butternut squash recipe from Mel Joulwan with sweet potato instead, for a slightly different flavor.

I'm lucky enough to have an Asian geared grocery store across the street from my work that has different veggies like okra, Bok Choy, and Japanese sweet potatoes at very reasonable prices. Japanese sweet potatoes mashed with ghee and coconut milk have become one of my absolute favorite special occasion side dishes. They are slightly sweeter/nuttier than regular sweet potatoes, and personally I have decided I like them more than your normal mash. I highly recommend trying these if your can find them!

Hi katieblue, I know you saw this on our group's post-W30 thread but thought I'd put it here in case anyone else is looking for ideas too.  If using this recipe below, please sub out the butter for a compliant ingredient. 

 

I was going to make these sweet potato bites for Easter but ran out of time so I just crumbled cooked compliant bacon into the sweet potatoes after they were roasted with olive oil, salt, and pepper.  Turned out to be a favorite dish among my traditional-sweet-potato-topped-with-marshmallows-loving family.  Sometime I'll actually try this recipe too:

I found a sweet potato kugel recipe that can be made compliant by omitting honey and using ghee. It's definitely different.

I tend to chop and toss in oil and roast and season however I want. (My current kick is this 6 chili powder I got at Kroger with garlic salt)

Isn't kugel a noodley sweet creamy dessert thing? I'm not sure making that compliant would be in the spirit of whole30 (swypo?) but I suppose if it ended up savory and you used it as a side dish in a meal it might work...

I actually have no idea what kugel is supposed to be as I never had it before Passover at a friends house (which I made) although if it is a treat them yeah def a SWYPO. oops.

It was definitely different and delicious. The recipe I followed called for a minimal amount of honey and it could easily be omitted and still delicious...

But to be completely honest, I just love sweet potatoes. My current obsession is with garlic and chili powder

So quick Google says it can be a savory or sweet custard so probably SWYPO.

Just looking for a place to share this eye-rolling-back-in-my-head good breakfast idea when I saw your post...Couldn't help but share here...

 

Scrambled (in ghee) eggs with a couple of drops of siracha

1/2 of a perfectly ripened avocado in those pretty little slices

very simply roasted sweet potato hashbrowns: diced sp's tossed in melted ghee and a little Himalayan pink salt and roasted for 15-20 min at 400 degrees.

 

OMG!

 

Even my skeptical husband agreed it was the best breakfast ever (with his non-compliant turkey bacon :) )

 

 

 

I'm well fueled for a day of seriously yard work!
