Heartburn

Recommended Posts

Day 10 and have had two heartburn flareups. First was after the salmon cakes and second after making sausage and eating it this morning. Maybe too much animal and or fish oils? used baking soda first time. wanted to go back to prilosec but I know it kills the good biotics.

Any suggestions?

Hey there

Prilosec is more trouble than it's worth from what I understand..

Can you give us a run down of portion sizes, specific foods and fluid intake that you've been eating and we can see if anything stands out?

And specifics... don't just say 'roasted veggies', tell us which ones :)

Are you eating any greens or vege with your meals.  Try a Kombucha.  Start with 1/2 bottle aday, work up to a bottle aday if your budget allows.  Kombucha really helps with heartburn and you've got to get those vegetables in.  Every day.  Just eating protein and fat can cause heartburn.  9 cups of vege aday helps keep the heartburn away and Kombucha is fab for the reverb.   And it has those good 'biotics' to help heal the gut.

Meal 1 was Salmon cakes, butternut squash soup, and green beans with mushrooms, onions and peppers.  Fluids Water

Meal 2 This morning was homemade sausage, eggs, homefries (red pepper & sweet potato). Small amount of coffee with coconut cream.

All meals per the Whole 30 cook book.

Try taking the peppers and onions out and see if that helps? Have you been eating an abundance of peppers and onions or was this the first time in the three days? They can cause digestive issues for people...

It would be helpful to see some typical days of meals, not just the two that gave you the problem...sometimes the problem is cumulative and sometimes a pattern emerges...

I found this Kombucha at my local grocer but the bottle said it contained trace amount of alcohol.  I didn't think it was complaint?

Probiotics in whole 30 approved pill form (the more 'strands' they have the better!), kombucha (GT brand above is whole 30 approved, what isn't is ones with sugar added after the fermentation process), kimchi (probably try a mild spice one), sauerkraut or water kefir (probably found near the kombucha in a store, or you can make your own).

I think its not just one thing in the meals, it's acid overproduction.

If probiotics don't help, eliminate some foods that make it act up!

I think about the stuff I eat when I have problems, it's when I eat peppers, drink coffee, or eat tomatoes (from homemade salsa.)

Peppers not just fresh, but dried: chili powder, red pepper flakes,  cayenne, etc.

If that doesn't work, see a doctor but make sure to ask about medication long term effects, some things that reduce acid, can reduce it too much and have negative effects.

Hope this helps!
