2 Days Post-30 and Feeling Terrible

Recommended Posts

So I completed my whole30!!! I am super proud :) The last week of my w30 however was pretty bad. After testing my willpower a little too often (I had a very busy social calendar) during my w30, I was struggling with severe cravings and feelings of deprivation.

By the last 4 days I was also experiencing severe bloating and stomach pains. Possible culprits for this were the excess coffee I was drinking in the last week, eating white potatoes regularly when I hadn't had any in 3 weeks, and eating more broccoli than I had so far in the 30 days. By the time it was done I was ecstatic. This disappointed me as before that last week I had really been enjoying it (although I was still waiting for my workouts to improve to old levels).

Whilst I had fully intended to continue on w30 eating as often as possibly post-30, by the time day 31 arrived I was living off a couple eggs in the fridge and a few limp veggies still in my crisper. I had no time to shop, a full time job, my mid-term exams were starting, I had 1 assignment due and I now had the excuse that I was technically finished. You can see where this is going...

What I have learnt/noticed so far -

  • Once the foods I was craving were no longer off limits, I didn't crave them or want them so bad. This was a revelation to me.
  • I tried to convince myself I wanted these foods, and ate them, even though I really didn't want them anymore. I forced myself to eat a bunch of different junk food today whilst studying, telling myself there was nothing else and I was allowed them now. None of it tasted good or was enjoyable, I threw most of it away and now I have terrible stomach pains.  My tastes have ABSOLUTELY changed. Now my brain needs too as well.
  • With 8-10hrs study/exams on top of work, atm I am living off coffee and it is still causing me a lot of pain. I think I need to stop drinking it.
  • I need to have better safeguards in place for those weeks when you just never seem to be able to catch up.

So, after this failed reintroduction, and my exams finishing tomorrow, any tips/hints/help with getting back on track/fixing this and getting organised again? The good (or bad?) thing here is that continuing on this way is not an option as I am in so much discomfort. I am only 2 days post-30.

First, congrats on finishing! I'm only 9 days in...

This is a problem I think a lot of us have. Habits are hard to break.

There are still rules after the 30 days are over. I've read the reintroduction stuff a lot (I'm very excited to finally get to that part...). Treat those as rules you MUST follow just like you followed the Whole30 rules. If you have a slip up like you did, go back to Whole30 eating until symptoms go away. Then start again with just reintroducing legumes on one day. Eat Whole30 for the next 2 days. Assess. Etc.

Yes, you are definitely right! I knew I had to do reintroduction, but justified to myself that if i just made it to day 30 and didnt give up, that was good enough, i didnt have to do the proper reintro. But that is NOT good enough! I can do better than this and i deserve better than this. So I will take your advice and just continue whole30 again until symptoms wear off and then start reintro properly( or maybe I'll just never reintroduce haha)

I did an elimination diet a couple years ago and I did the exact same thing. "YEAH, I made! Now for some beer and nachos. Mmmm...fried cream cheese jalapeno poppers. Oh, that cheese cake looks good." It didn't help that it was Super Bowl Sunday.

Hopefully your symptoms go away quickly and you can get back on track easily!

There are others in the same boat.  I went completely off the rails when I finished my first on 3/31/16. I've gained back half the weight I lost, I'm super bloated, my arthritis is back and I have no energy...after 15 days. I'm just gonna jump back on the wagon for another 30 and take the time to properly reintroduce.

I know that legumes cause me arthritis pain so I probably won't reintroduce at all, not sure yet. I may reintroduce according to plan and just keep a diary of how I feel when I eat certain foods so I know for certain what the culprits are.
