What caused the gas/bloat?

Recommended Posts

So my fiancé and I both have digestive issues. His have never been diagnosed, I've been told possibilities for mine which include ibs, lactose intolerant and diverticulitis. Also I don't have my gallbladder anymore. We're doing whole30 mainly for trying to get control of these issues. We are on day 4 and while not being strict we a being conscious of the FODMAP foods. Neither of us have had any real tummy trouble until tonight.

I am hoping someone can point out what may have been the problem. Tonight I made baked sweet potatoes, topped them with pulled pork (it had a rub on it that was made with chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt), with a roasted red pepper sauce (red peppers, garlic, avocado oil, salt, and apple cider vinegar). Both of us were immediately bloated and gassy after we ate.

Any guesses as to what may have been the culprit? Could it have been the garlic? We've been eating sweet potatoes and red peppers all week without incidence so I'm ruling them out.

Thanks for any help.

Yep, garlic and avocado are both high FODMAP, and if you're sensitive to FODMAPs then sweet potato should be eaten in moderation only.

If you're sensitive to FODMAPs the thing is that our bodies have a limit as to how much they can handle and this is very individual. If you KEEP crossing that limit you'll reach a point where you'll have to exclude high FODMAP foods in order to allow your gut to properly heal.

If you already have gut issues then you may already have reached this point.

It would be much easier to determine this if we could see the other meals you've been eating - as I said the effect on the gut is cumulative so if this is a typical meal it could be that you've pushed yourselves beyond your limit. OR it could be coincidence - without see your other meals it's hard to tell.

I didn't really think about the garlic plus the avocado oil, both were such small amount but maybe you guys are correct. I'm going to keep an eye on those things.

jmcbn-  Im confused, I thought that sweet potatoes are fine and do not need to be limited? They're in blue on the list. I'm a total newb so I could be wrong so please explain if I am.

On the W30 shopping list they are in blue, yes, but they can be very problematic, as can coconut milk if you're using a lot of that. I eat low FODMAP all the time - I know first hand. Take a look at >this infographic< and eat from the green list only for a few days and see how you go. Alternatively have a look at the Monash University website or download their app for guidance - they are testing FODMAPs constantly and updating their records with pretty definitive guides as to how much of certain foods a FODMAP sensitive person can eat.
