Coconut Aminos

Hello. I'm in Canada and while I only checked one health food store, I was unable to find anything labelled coconut aminos. I did find something that I believe to be the same as all it contained was coconut sap and sea salt. I opened it up and it smelled pretty decent lol.

I'm a huge fan of stirfry but prior to starting Whole30, I would just add whatever stirfry sauce I had in the fridge. Here's hoping this will work :)

The only way that coconut sap is okay on Whole30 is if it's been fermented. There are coconut aminos in Canada... Coconut secret sells one and another company sells one called Naked Coconuts. What brand is what you bought? You may want to contact the company and find out if that is a fermented product because otherwise it's a no go.

Hello,

Also looking for coconut aminos in Canada (Montreal), I found 'coconut marinade' by Eco Ideas. It said 'source of liquid aminos' on the label, so I bought it and used it today. I'm on day 7, and holy moly this stuff tastes sweet. It's so sweet (compared to soy sauce, anyway) that it tastes like it's not compliant! The ingredients are: organic coconut nectar syrup, organic pure coconut sap water, natural unrefined sea salt, garlic extract. The website says it is naturally fermented and low GI - what does the Whole30 staff say? Do I need to start over? I don't plan to use it again even if it is, because it won't help slay my sugar dragon...

Thanks!

My suggestion would be to order the coconut aminos on Amazon if you can. My side of Madison JUST started getting coconut aminos and I ordered online before that happened.

They sell a 3 pack of original, teriyaki, and garlic.  I LOVE this stuff! I get a huge bag of frozen stir-fry veggies from Coscto and use the coconut aminos and it's great! It's usually my dinner if I haven't thought out/prepped dinner the night before.

@Anaminden... I'm not sure. I haven't seen that before, but like you said. If it's really sweet and it will hinder you from slaying your sugar dragon, it's best to lay off the stuff if you can.

@Anaminden - You may benefit from checking out the list of sneaky sugars:

http://whole30.com/downloads/whole30-sugar.pdf

(Also see links in moderators post above.)

Anything that has "syrup" in it is definitely a sugar.  I believe "nectar" may be in the same category.  So, the first ingredient of "organic coconut nectar syrup" gets read by my mind as "blah blah questionable NOPE."

Good luck!

That's why reading labels every time is so important. Different brands may use different ingredients for the same sounding product. The same brand made in different regions/countries may have different ingredients. The same brand that used to be compliant last time may have changed their recipe.

Just FYI a post above mentioned the garlic and teriyaki sauce. Those two are not compliant. Just the coconut Amino's.

I bought the naked coconut coconut Amino's and they're great. I even emailed the company back and forth and they answered all of my questions.

Why wouldn't the garlic be compliant? Coconut Aminos (Coconut Secret brand) ingredients are: organic coconut sap aged and blended with sun-dried, mineral-rich sea salt.

Garlic coconut aminos ingredients are: organic coconut sap, organic garlic, sea salt, organic ginger, organic cayenne pepper.

Teriyaki coconut aminos ingredients are: organic coconut sap, sea salt, organic ginger, organic onion, organic garlic, organic cayenne pepper.

Those are all compliant ingredients.

This is the one that I buy from my local grocery store but it is also available through amazon;

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019QR8MQQ/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687722&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B003XB5LMU&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=S9RN9QVZ36KF6G57PMBY

Thrive market also carries it, but I looked it up and at this time they don't ship to Canada. However, it looked like maybe in the future?

Hope this helps!!!

About two years ago Canada stopped the labelling use of "aminos", so we can't find "coconut aminos" in Canada but there are a few compliant brands and I found Sobeys carries a brand that is compliant as well as the Bulk Barn.  However best of all is to make your own substitute following this link http://meljoulwan.com/2014/03/01/substitute-soy-sauce-coconut-aminos/.  It is really easy to make and is alot cheaper than buying.  Hope this helps my fellow Canadians doing a W30.

This substitute recipe is not suitable for anyone doing Whole30 as it contains molasses which is a sweetener. Sorry. Great for post-Whole30 though.

The coconut aminos are no longer labelled as that but they are exactly the same thing.  No clue why they've done that though. :S
