Claritin and Flonase

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I'm starting the Whole 30 on Sunday. I currently take Claritin and Flonase for allergies. The post nasal drip from my allergies causes sleep apneatic episodes. I'm hoping the Whole 30 can help clear it up, but I don't know if it's wise to start the Whole 30 without the medication since it could take time to clear up - if it will. But I noticed Claritin has sucrose and Flonase has dextrose (and maybe a bit of alcohol) in it. If I stayed on these medicines, would it mess up my Whole 30?

I'd stay on it to start and maybe back off on frequency if you notice an improvement over all. I'm sure others will have better advice but as a rule of thumb, doc's orders trump w30. I know neither are RX, but if it was the advice of a medical prof, then keep doing so.

You need to do what you feel comfortable doing with your medications, however, as they are not doctor prescribed, they don't really trump the rules. A fair majority of people with allergies have seen significant improvement in their symptoms. It's definitely your choice and sleep apnea is nothing to fool around with but people have seen reductions in their apnea as well so... my advice would be to start the Whole30 without the meds and see how you go... because they're not prescribed, there's not a lot of chance of withdrawl or rebound effect so there's not a lot of risk to stopping them to see how it goes.

I have significant allergies and have used essential oils to clear them up. I take an 'Allergy Bomb' in the morning and diffuse as necessary. Once I was done with my first W30 all I needed to do was the daily diffusing to keep them at bay.

I use eden's garden oils as they are not an MLM, are therapeutic grade and cost significantly less than other companies. I purchase on Amazon.

I purchase veggie capsules at Sprouts and put 5 drops peppermint, 5 drops lemon and 5 drops lavender in the capsule and swallow. This combo is also put into a diffuser with water and diffused at my desk. You can also add a carrier oil and make it into a roll-on for spot treatment.

They're not quite the same, but (OTC) recommended locally by Ear, Nose & Throat specialists here in Australia for a number of sinus conditions:

Salt water nasal spray (you can get it with or without eucalyptus)

Medical grade sesame oil (not to be used by anyone with a sesame allergy)

Even though you can purchase Claritin and Flonase without a prescription, they are often necessary and may  be "prescribed" by your doctor.  If you decide to go off these when doing your W30, be very careful.  I have allergies and asthma.  I have a preventive inhaler and an emergency inhaler - those require prescriptions.  I also take zyrtec - OTC - every day.  My asthma is often triggered by allergies so that is why I need the zyrtec.  Years ago, I was supposed to go for allergy testing (I have had it done a few times in my life) and I was not allowed to take allergy medicine for a certain number of days. For a few days, my breathing was  really bad and the emergency inhaler was not working.  I knew I needed to take those allergy pills and I knew I needed to be on a round of prednisone (which is prescribed but you also can't take this for allergy testing) but I didn't want anything to interfere with my testing.  When I got to my appointment, I could hardly talk because I could not breathe.   End result, the testing could not be done.   It would have been too dangerous to test me.  Even though these meds do not require a prescription, I would suggest you check with your doctor to see if it is safe for you to go off them for your whole 30.  For all my whole 30's, I stay on zyrtec.  Honestly, I have never even looked at the ingredients because I know I must remain on it.  For me, the consequences of not taking it far out weigh the benefits of the Whole 30.
