Are my meds keeping more good results?

Recommended Posts

Hello form the Netherlands. In in advance.... sorry for my silly english.

I started Whole 30 (I am on Day 9, after I had reached day 24 before but made a stupid mistake not reading a label) for several reasons. I was diagnosed with chronic factique syndrome when I was 22, I have a bipolar disorder, migraine, asthma, and I have been struggling with eating all my life (I am 48) - overeating, gaining weight, dieting, loosing weight, falling of the wagon and overeating again, putting on more and more pound in the process. A year ago I had a severe outburst of rosacea. I started reading about inflamnation, sugar en gut health and put the puzzle together. Reading about all sorts of programs, whole30 seemed like a logical starting point for me to heal myself. I have no troubles following the rules. I like cooking, I am interested in food, and - apart from the binges - I was used to cooking healthy meals form scratch. It does, hower, take more time en energy, cause I put a variety of foods on my plate. And I really miss eating cheese and some other stuff. The best result for me at this point is that I don't  struggle with food anymore (I miss things, but I do not have the urge to binge on stuff) and I did not have one migraine attacks, which is so great! And my 18 year old son is sharing meals with me and he is feeling happier en more energetic (even though he eats some bread and dairy too, he is 2 meters tall, difficult stuffing him without it). A bummer, however, is that I need to take antibiotics for my skin for 8 weeks. And now I am having a auto immune reaction to the medication (my skin is blistering), but I have to keep taking the meds. It is reallly demotivating cause I know it is hurting my gut. I eat home made sauerkraut en bonebroth to do some good. But I feel tired, have fevers. It is difficult to stick to the program. not knowing if it will bring me more energie en so forth. Also, since I don't overeat, my depression got worse. I know I used food to selfmedicate. I try other things, like yoga (really helpful) and walking.  But I feel so sick of feeling tired en depressed, despite all my efforts. I would really like to know if there are other people with depression and chronic fatique and how long it took fot them to feel better. Or that maybe, I even can't count these day's because of the meds I am taking and my bad reaction to the meds.  I am planning to stick to te program, as long as it takes. But I just need some sort of hope that it wil work for me. Something like that. Sorry for the complaining, but sometimes it is just really hard.

First, I would like to send you a hug and let you know that others on this board can relate to your feelings.  We might have different experiences but emotional pain is horrible.  I have depression, anxiety, PTSD, asthma, allergies and a skin disease.  I have also had issues with food and body image.   I am on meds for most of these conditions.  For me, just participating in the W30 will not solve my problems. I  need assistance on many different levels.  However, Whole 30 is great in so many ways.  We are treating our bodies with respect by nourishing them properly.  Secondly, it gives us an opportunity to learn and connect with so many wonderful people.  Depression tends to cause people to isolate (it does for me) so interacting with others (even if it's just online, but in person is also necessary) is important.  It may also be beneficial for you to join one of the forums for extra support as you continue your W30.

Some medications may keep you from getting the best results but you can still get good results. Doctors orders always come before Whole 30 rules so please stay on your medications until your doctor decides to change them.  It may take you more than 30 days to feel better. If you consider the amount of time we have felt lousy, 30 days is really nothing.  I have done lots of W30's and longer.  Unfortunately, I don't think anyone can tell you how long it will take for you to feel better.  It varies greatly from person to person.  Honestly, I don't feel better but I don't blame that on the Whole 30 not working. I am dealing with issues that are causing extreme distress and sadness.   However, there is no downside to this lifestyle so I plan to stick mainly to this way of eating.

Great job of finding activities that help so that you don't use food to self medicate. That alone is a sign of progress.  Keep going, be proud of every small or large accomplishment.  No need to apologize for complaining.  In fact, I don't view your post as complaining. You are being honest and reaching out for help.  That is positive and yes, "sometimes it is just really hard".

Thank you for taking the time for replying. And thank you for being so understanding.

I am so sorry you aint feeling that well too and that whole 30 did not help so far. So good that you are sticking with it anyway! I will do just that! We will be sticking with it together then. And in time things might change, who knows.

Love, Jonette

Jonette - being chronically ill is very hard on people physically and emotionally. I would first suggest you let your dr know about the reaction to the meds, he/she may want to prescribe something different.

I agree with Laurie, I face digestive issues from un-diagnosed gall bladder disease, migraines and mild depression. When I did my first W30 I didn't have a migraine for almost 6 weeks and that was proof enough for me that something I'm eating is exacerbating my migraines. I did have more energy and overall felt better but did still struggle. I also attribute that to being unkind to my body for so long, and think it will take longer than 30 days to repair the gut damage I've done. I do plan to properly reintroduce foods so I can figure out what causes me distress and be kinder to myself moving forward.

You'll get there...this is a race so sometimes you just have to pace yourself and slow down to a jog so you can finish successfully.

Hello from Australia *waves*

You're doing great :) Always talk to your doctor if you're struggling with medication. Your chemist too as sometimes they can suggest an alternate version with the same active ingredients but different other ingredients (mine has been working hard to find me things without gluten, dairy and soy).

If you're feeling a little lower than usual, you may want to up your starch intake. Lower blood sugar can be a depression trigger for some.

Some people need a fist sized serve of starchy veg with each meal, some people are okay with one a day, see how you feel with more, you can always lower it again if you don't feel any better. Make sure you talk to your doctor about the depression too.

Make sure you're getting enough food and nutrition, especially for the chronically ill, we can be deficient in the vitamins, minerals, protein etc we need for repair (the need is higher than in healthy people) and a good night's sleep. If you're not taking any magnesium, this is a great place to start as magnesium is used more heavily by the body under stress.
