Starbucks Passion Tango Tea

Hi, I recently started the Whole 30 and I was wondering if the Passion Tango tea from Starbucks is Whole30 compliant. I get it unsweetened but feel like it's too good to be true. I've checked the forum and it looks as though a lot of the responses are from prior to Starbucks switching from Tazo to Teavana. When I looked up the ingredients, this is what is listed "An Infusion Of [Water, Hibiscus Flower, Cinnamon, Candied Papaya Pieces (Papaya, Sugar), Rose Hips, Apple Pieces, Lemongrass, Natural And Artificial Flavors, Blackberry Leaves, Candied Mango Pieces (Mango, Sugar), Rose Petals]."

Did you get the passion tango iced tea or passion tango hot tea? They have different ingredients. The ingredients you listed are for the hot tea. The iced tea is compliant if ordered unsweetened. Ignore the classic syrup, that is the sweetener. I used to work for Starbucks.

Ingredients

An Infusion Of [Water, Hibiscus Flowers, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Cinnamon, Apple, Licorice Root, Lemongrass, Fruit Juice Extract], Ice, Classic Syrup [sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid].

@apool1 I just had a major meltdown when I thought my iced passion tea was made with sugar (I told them NO sugar/sweetener and then read about the candied fruit).  Your comment that there is a difference between hot and iced saved me from totally going off the rails. Thank you!

This freaked me out too, as I've had this a couple of times during my W30. Just reconfirmed on the Starbucks website, and as far as I can tell there is no sugar in the Iced Passion Tango Tea, unsweetened.

Phew!

I actually read the box myself yesterday in Starbucks.  Its much more like what the Tazo Passion used to be, not what the warm Teavana is so without the syrup it appears to be totally fine.  I drink a lot of Celestial Seasonings hibiscus teas at home, but like most things, it tastes different when someone else makes it LOL.   I wish they still have Tazo tbh.  I went into the Teavana store the other day and almost everything is sweetened or has candied fruit or other undesirables.

@MeeshKB @Jewels_V Hey guys! When I was doing the Whole 30 I tweeted the queen, Melissa Hartwig herself, about this topic. She said the iced passion fruit iced tea is Whole 30 compliant! Hope this helps :)

I believe somewhere around the same time she also said it does not matter if the Queen herself says it's compliant, we're all expected to check and ask questions every time because it could be compliant in her region/store and not yours/mine... never rely on anyone else's fact checking, including the Queen unless it also has a Whole30 Approved logo on it :)

Agreed. And when your fact checking results line up with the Queen's...drink up and enjoy! :D

I was researching the Starbucks website for things I could actually have, and I'm not sure if they changed the ingredients or what, but the Passion Tango Herbal Tea from Teavana (that they now serve in-store in Starbucks) is no longer compliant :( The ingredients include candied papaya (papaya and sugar) and candied mango (same).

Starbucks site: https://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/tea/passion

Teavana site: http://www.teavana.com/us/en/tea/herbal-tea/passion-tango-herbal-tea-31499.html

Just wanted to update everyone. I may be missing something, so please correct me if I'm wrong! I'm meeting a friend for coffee and I was thinking I'd try tea and the more options I have the better, haha!

@LoriBeth - as far as I can see, the situation is the same as was discussed previously. The hot tea is not compliant but the tea that they use for the iced passion drink is compliant if you ask them not to add the sugar syrup at the time they make the beverage (ie, in the ingredients below, you would say "no liquid cane sugar, please".

Ingredients

AN INFUSION OF [WATER, HIBISCUS FLOWERS, CITRIC ACID, NATURAL FLAVORS, CINNAMON, APPLE, LICORICE ROOT, LEMONGRASS, FRUIT JUICE EXTRACT], ICE, LIQUID CANE SUGAR [WATER, TURBINADO CANE SUGAR, CANE SUGAR, NATURAL FLAVOR, POTASSIUM SORBATE, CITRIC ACID].

@ladyshanny awesome- thank you for the clarification! Here's the link for those that would like it:

It is weird, though, because when I worked at Starbucks a few years ago we just used the same tea bags as the hot tea bags to make the iced. I'm happy they've kept this iced version separate, especially for us on Whole30!
