Snack ideas with food and gut issues...

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm currently still nursing and so I snack quite a bit. I rely heavily on nuts/seeds/dried fruits/apples/almond butter. However, my chiro just told me I have Gallbladder issues so to stay away from nuts for awhile because of the high fat content. I also have leaky gut so was considering doing the FODMAP version of low 30 but I am at a loss of what to cook! I need recipes because all of my favorite fruits and veggies are the ones you can't have. Feeling discouraged..need some ideas.

Have you gone onto google or pinterest and searched for any low FODMAP Whole30 recipes?  There are many out there.

As far as nuts and seeds, it is also recommended that you limit them during a Whole30 as they are notoriously difficult to digest and are also a poor Omega 3/6 balance along with being food without brakes for a lot of people.

Here's a google search with Low Fodmap Whole30 recipes as the search terms... I see some recipe pages along with some forum threads that have ideas.

I also need to eat low FODMAP, so I make large skillet dishes, sauteing together in olive oil or coconut oil:

protein such as chicken, shrimp, or beef

veggies that are low FODMAP such as spinach, green beans, carrots, red pepper

eggs

spices & herbs

Then I make a sauce every few days, which I add to my dish of food just before eating. My sauces are either olive oil and lemon juice, or else   a mayo-based dressing (1 egg, 1 T lemon juice, 1 cup light olive oil, plus your favorite herbs and spices, all whirred together with a stick blender).

I make LOTS of this and eat it when I need food--I try to stick to 3 meals a day, but you could add a 4th meal since you're nursing perhaps, rather than snacking on traditional snack foods. It's not exciting, but it's tasty and healthy and very convenient. You can make it in 10 minutes and then it's ready for several days worth of meals.

Good luck!

Some people do better with coconut oil with gallbladder problems (it's a shorter chain fat), it's worth trying different fats.

There are enzymes to help breakdown fat too.

Bone broth and gelatin are also great for leaky gut. If you don't like the taste of bone broth, use it to make soup.

We have quite a few low FODMAP folks here, so you are not alone :)

Seconding bone broth for snacking on for gut health. Easy to sip on the go (kinda like a coffee replacement) and has tons of collagen. This post on bone broth collagen does a pretty good job explaining bone broth's gut health benefits.
