Taking Magnesium with Fruit Juice

Ksass4

Recommended Posts

I take magnesium citrate in pure powder form (no other ingredients added), which has to be dissolved in liquid.  Just with water, its pretty horrendous tasting, even shooting it like a shot I have difficulty choking it down.  So what I've been doing lately was adding 1-2oz of 100% cherry juice (also no other ingredients added) just to make it palatable.

For the purposes of taking a magnesium supplement which is recommended on here, would this still be ok during a Whole30?  I'm not drinking the juice for the sugar cravings and rarely consume juice as it is BECAUSE of the sugar content.  Again, this is for the purpose of taking a powdered supplement.

Before anyone comments or suggests magnesium in pill form, I can't do pills because I have difficulty swallowing them.  If taking my magnesium with a splash of pure fruit juice is a no-no, what other suggestions do you have that would still allow me to take it?

Thanks!

Yes, this would be fine in this case I think... mix it with water first to activate it and then the splash of juice should be fine... we do say that you can flavor water with a splash of fruit juice so in this case it wouldn't be much different... It's what I do because that unflavored stuff is AWFUL... makes me gag thinking of it!

If you get worried about feeding the sugar dragon (which it doesn't look like you are), you can always take with a meal (unless it says not to) but that little fruit juice probably isn't hurting as much as if it were a giant glass like I used to do with all my juice lol

Ya, I suppose you could but it's about 2.5 tablespoons of juice that you mix with the water/mag combo and then I basically take it like a shot... three gulps and done...

Also, not sure if the very high heat of the tea would deactivate the mag...

I don't think it would be good with tea because because the magnesium has a pretty strong, almost artificial taste to it, therefore need a "mixer" just as strong to cover the taste.  Not something I would make a glass of to sip on.

Ya, the citric acid makes it quite sour... I wouldn't want to drag out the consumption process either.

My Naturopath also recommended magnesium in the powder form.. its red right?  any how, the way I got it down was a little water and shoot it down, then make the face.. but I also was able to put it in my jUiced apple juice. the real apples really juiced in my hurom.. Is that okay so I can go back to taking it?  (when I do start my W30 in june, 2016 )

Is the powder red? No, I've never seen it red but that doesn't mean the one you're using isn't.

As long as the powder and the splash of juice doesn't have anything offplan in it, then you're a-ok to take it on your Whole30. As mentioned above, this isn't a carte blanche to start drinking glasses of juice, but if you put an oz or two into the mixture to make it palatable, then there's nothing wrong with that... we tell people they can use a splash of fruit juice to flavor water so this is pretty similar. Use the least juice you need to gulp it down.

If anyone is looking for juice alternatives, kombucha or blended cucumbers in water are another option.

As it's very sour/acid, avoid things that are also sour/acid like lemon as it will often make it seem worse.

I mix mine and use it to swallow my supplements, I find I pay less attention to how it tastes then

Can I use my juicer for making my own juice. Straight from the apple and carrot it self?

We'd really prefer you just ate the apple & the carrot - juicing removes the fibre.

so I can't ever juice?????  I'd eat the apple later on for a snack if that is okay.. Is that okay?  I gotta get that magnesium down and mixing it in, ya like a baby, makes the medicine go down..;)

A small amount for mixing with the magnesium is fine, but as has been mentioned above drinking juice otherwise is no bueno.

As for eating the apple later as a snack, this is another thing we don't encourage as eating fruit alone can impact blood sugar. We'd encourage you to build your meals to be large enough to keep you feeling full for 4-5hrs without the need for snacks.

Hope this helps.

Sort of on this topic...Why are we supposed to take this supplement? I bought it (basically because one of the books said to and that it's supposed to have lots of benefits) and used it this morning but regretted it almost instantly since I am going to spend the day suffering through an unnecessary and unwanted colon cleanse. Are people seriously taking this daily??? Not a good experience here.:(

There are no supplements you have to take on whole30. Many people find that magnesium helps them sleep when taken at night, and it's also recommended to people who suffer constipation.

When you first start taking it, start with a partial dose for a few days and then increase gradually to either a full dose, or the point where it causes digestive issues, whichever comes first.

There are different forms of magnesium -- magnesium citrate, magnesium sulfate, and others -- and some people do better with different versions.

Thanks. I understand that I don't have to take it, but I thought that the list of benefits made it sound desirable. I was unaware that it was a laxative, which I definitely don't need. I may try a lighter dose at night and see what that does for sleep.

I did read it any where in the book yet. I went to a naturopath and that was prescribed to me last year for sleep or what ever else. I didn't have any diuretic effects that I can remember.. I'm sure something like that you do not forget..

so, I chimed in because I was taking it before but not from the W30 recommendations.

where is that list at any way?

Most people take magnesium at night, partially for sleep but also because it brings water into the colon, helping it to release waste naturally.

Some people have trouble with particular forms of magnesium, so if you feel it doesn't agree with you, you might want to try a different form.

If you're getting an extreme response when taking it, especially more than once, this isn't what most people are experiencing, don't keep taking it if it's making you feel sick. Your doctor or chemist may be able to recommend an alternate form for you.

the one recommended to me and I'll have to change back to it is Innate Magnesium 300 Powder. I was told to take 1/2 scoop to start.

It is Magnesium  (as Citrate, Malate complex, glyciNATE.  but now that I"m doing whole 30 I can't take this kind because it has Stevea Leave in it.. So, I'm taking pills now
