Day 11 help needed!!!

Recommended Posts

I'm on Day 11 of my first Whole30. All is going well except for a feeling that I'm eating too much food and need help with portion sizes. The concept of no weighing, measuring and counting calories probably makes sense for 99% the people following the Whole30 but it's a real struggle for me. Most of the recipes in the Whole30 book serve 2 and are made with 16oz of protein....but 8oz of protein is much larger then the palm of my hand. I've been eating half the recipe but I'm not sure what to do when I'm not making a recipe....eat 8oz or a palm size (3-4ish oz)? Also, a thumb or two of fats per meal is totally lost on me, especially if I'm using a liquid oil. How do I get a feel for a thumb full of a liquid if I'm pouring it into a pan and it spreads all over? What I'm trying to ask: Is it against the rules to portion with weights (ounces) and measurements (tsp or tlbs) since a "palm" and a "thumb" are pretty abstract for a Type A personality like me. If it's not against the rules, can some give me some guidance? Also, for some of the "sauce" recipes that make 2 cups (like the romesco sauce) should I consider it a "fat" and what is a portion...? Thanks in advance for your help!

I can help you with the fat part of your question..   Think of one thumb full as a generous TBLS… ALSO remember, the fat you use to COOK with is not counted as the fat  you are to consume with your meal.  Most of it stays in the pan..    and YES I believe your romesco sauce would be used as your portion of fat..

About your protein,, its one to two palm's.. Wait until you try to figure out  chicken wings, the fun really begins… :)

Don't go and weigh everything. Really, don't do it.

The 16oz is the pre-cooking weight of the protein, so it will weigh less when it's cooked and you go to eat it. But base everything off the length, width, and thickness of your palm. You may get more than 2 servings out of a recipe, depending on the size of your hands. A thumb's worth of oil? It's a little bit more than a good, solid glug. But most of what you cook with stays in the pan, so it's negligible. The fat should be added *after* cooking, unless you're methodically scraping every single bit of oil out of the pan after you cook.

Sauces...you have to look at what it's made of. A mayo based sauce is going to be primarily fat. Romesco is like half vegetable, so it wouldn't automatically count as a fat.

If you really think you're eating too much, post a couple days' worth of meals, with portions and water intake and a mod will be around before too long to take a look.

I'm on day 22 and thought I was eating too much as well. But, because we shouldn't be snacking, I find if I'm not really full after a meal, I can't make the 5 hours or so until the next meal.

It's a lot of protein for me too. I can tell you in the last few days, I've started to feel stronger and I think the protein and of course no sugar is contributing to that.

Best of luck to you!

Are you eating enough? And enough fat, specifically?
