Phytates in sweet potatoes

Recommended Posts

In the past, my husband has noticed sensitivities to phytic acid in grains and baking cocoa which he has done fine with as long as we soak the grains or he gets enough calcium (from raw milk) to help process it. We just started a whole30 and he immediately noticed issues with sweet potatoes. After doing some research, he found out they have phytates also. Since he can't drink milk for 30 days, should we just eliminate the sweet potatoes or is there another way to deal with phytates?

Maybe see if upping leafy greens (spinach/kale/chard etc) ups his calcium to the point he can tolerate them? Or just eliminate them for the remainder of w30

ETA: it seems boiling sweet potatoes breaks down the phytic acid to help it be more digestible for those who have issues with it.

You might want to check this out a little more. I could be wrong but I have been reading that white potatoes and yams have the same amount of phytates but sweet potatoes don't actually have any. Some stores don't label yams and sweet potatoes correctly so you will have to spot the difference. Just something to think about, it may add an extra carby veg back to the menu.
