Reintro Issues - Next steps?

Hi there.

A few years ago I was having symptoms that led to discovering many nutritional deficiencies despite having a relatively good diet. I was more concerned with getting my nutrients up than what led me to that spot to begin with. I had one test for celiac and it came back negative, but I was so sick at the time I was barely eating for weeks. Fast forward to this year and I was feeling fairly healthy, but had some lingering issues that wouldn't quit.

Long story short, I successfully completed the Whole 30 last month. I felt absolutely amazing. Loved my results and it eliminated some issues I've had for years.

Then came the reintro. I am shocked and upset. Apparently I have a major soy and gluten issue. Soy gives me terrible lower gi issues within 15 minutes of consuming it and gluten does the same, in addition to giving me vertigo, making my leg swell, and giving me stabbing stomach pains.

Has anyone ever discovered issues after the Whole 30 and then him through medical testing? I really had no idea I had these issues until now. I always thought I was lactose intolerant but this is worse. Why are the reactions so bad?

Any thoughts, advice, experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

The reactions are so bad because your body doesn't want you consuming those items... it can be a bit shocking but now that you know, you can make a food plan going forward that means that you shouldn't have these reactions...

A lot of people discover very significant issues after Whole30 that they didn't know they had... the body is an amazing machine and it will do its best to minimize damage so while you're eating all those things on a regular basis, your body creates mucosal layers in your gut that help to cushion the blow from damaging items... when you do the Whole30, that lining sluffs off and when you put those inflammatory things back in your body, it's very noticeable.

Hi SugarCubeOD,

I am seeking you out in the Reintro forums since you were the moderator of the April 25th group that just got done and I loved reading your advice throughout my Whole30.

That all being said, I gained countless NSV and I am certain I lost quite a bit of weight but did not weigh myself. In all, I loved my Whole30 experience so much. That is... until Reintro.....

Now, I totally admit that I did not follow the reintro guidelines and that is on me and now I am suffering the consequences. However, I was eating paleo before my Whole30 and just wanted to reintroduce a few things so I thought WTH....(whoops) Last night I had half a glass of red wine before it gave me a head splitting migraine, and I ate a slice of cheese on my burger and a piece of dark chocolate. I KNOW THIS WAS COMBINING WAY TOO MANY THINGS and soooo not Whole30. However, what is done is done.

Anyways, I ended up throwing up all night long. Ugh.

So my question is this... do you think it was a combination of all the different introductions or does it sound like I might be intolerant to something? *Please God not wine* And is throwing up normal?? My boyfriend has done multiple Whole30s as well as some friends and nobody has ever experienced this with their reintros, so I am just trying to figure out what my body is doing!

Is the best way to continue with reintroductions properly even if I don't intend to add back legumes/grains/most dairy?

Thank you for any and all help you can lend!

Oh dear Ellen... I'm so sorry that you had such a rough night.  Unfortunately it is really difficult to know what caused the reaction altho throwing up is not a really common reaction...

The best thing you can do is to go back to Whole30 until you feel better... my recommendation is to do it for at least a week... your reaction was strong and you may have lasting effects...

You don't have to re-intro things you never plan to eat again... for me, I never ever plan to eat beans or soy, so I've never re-intro'd those because they are not an option for me regardless... if you think you might want pie one day, then you'll need to do the grain re-intro to know if pie is worth it to you... same with dairy... you can re-intro just to get the data but that doesn't mean you have to eat it often...

When you get back to feeling amazing in a week or so, follow the re-intro guidelines so that you really know what's what and how you react... as you've seen, going balls to the wall with 'stuff' is not ideal because you don't know what caused the reaction... I'm tempted to think the throwing up is either from the wine, or a touch of food poisoning/flu because it's rather uncommon...

Did that help?  Let me know if I can provide more info or pointers.  Thanks for your compliment and for seeking me out, I'm always happy to help!

Thank you so much for your reply SugarcubeOD!

I am starting to come to terms with living soy and gluten free and have a checkup in July to talk about my findings and my health moving forward.

It's funny. You go into the whole30 for one reason and come out with an entirely new perspective. At first I was really upset because I was just so shocked at my findings. But now I feel relieved to have some answers to a 3 year long health journey.
