HELP! Holiday weekend approaching

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am on day 3 and seem to have recovered from my headachy, hungover feeling of yesterday. Looking ahead I'm a little concerned about days 5-7. It's a long weekend and weekends are always difficult for me even without the Whole30. I don't want to fail and I don't want to be a hermit and lock myself in the house for the weekend. How do I celebrate responsibly?

I'm on Day 26, so I've been through a few sunny weekends with lots of food and drink around. Actually it's easier when there's more people around, no one will notice what you eat or drink.

We went to a party last week and the first thing my husband did was get me a club soda and a beer for him. No one blinked.  I I ate a piece of grilled chicken, the host said was marinated in olive oil and spices and a little bit of fruit salad. There were no compliant veggies, so I just ate a double portion at my next meal.

If you are committed, you'll be just fine. I have been through so many diet and eating plans, I promised myself I would see this through to the end.

You can do it and still have fun.

BYOF - Bring your own food! If you go to a gathering where there will be food, bring something like a side dish that you know will be compliant and that you can eat comfortably! :) And ask questions before you go - tell the host you are on an elimination diet and ask them what they are cooking their foods with/in. You can even ask them to set something aside for you without a marinade or rub if you're comfortable enough with them. With home cooked food at gatherings, it is generally a lot easier to avoid screwing up!

When I go to people's homes, I often bring a Tupperware filled with a compliant meal. That way, if there's nothing I can eat, I can at least eat what I brought. People usually ask, but are totally fine with it when you explain about your food sensitivities. This only works well if it's a big party where people are milling and fading around the house or yard. If it's a sit-down meal, I always call the host/hostess well in advance and explain/ask. I also offer to bring my own food to make things easier. Sometimes they take me up on the offer, and I'm just fine with that. Then both me and the host know that I'm sticking to how I need to eat and no one is concerned about anyone else making a mistake!
