Starting June 1st!

Hello, all!

My name is Katie, and after 12 years of yo-yo dieting (that's more than half my life!), I have found myself almost at my "I will never again weigh this much" weight.

Recently I've tried keeping my calories to under 1200/day.  That didn't work - I always went over - so I switched to 1200 three times a week and 1600 four times a week.  That didn't work.  I was always hungry, and would eat fast food, as long as I stayed under my calorie goal.  I've felt bloated and sluggish.

I bought the Whole30 book several months ago, but being right in the middle of the college semester with exams coming up and ZERO time to cook made me put the book on my shelf and not open it again.  Now finals are over and I have no excuses.

Last night, I was tossing and turning in bed - I've been dealing with insomnia but have been reluctant to turn to medication - I suddenly remembered the Whole30 book.  I've read through it again and decided that June 1st would be the perfect start date.

My boyfriend and sister have committed to supporting me, but it looks like I'm doing my first 30 on my own.  I'm loathe to post about it on my Facebook, because I have those health-nut friends who are constantly posting recipes or how their workout went, blah blah blah.  Honestly it gets really annoying.  Also, many of my family members mean well, but aren't helpful with their "tips and tricks."

In any case, whether anyone reads this or not, it's been really cathartic and helpful to type it out.

Until Day 1!

Katie

I am starting my first Whole 30 tomorrow, too. My problem is that my family is health conscious, but they think the Whole 30 is too extreme. ("Not even Stevia? That's bordering ridiculous, don't you think?") If you want another buddy I'd be happy to talk!

I have family members like that, too!  Also, my grandmother did three or four W30s in a row, but only lost 10lbs, so a lot of my family is writing off the W30 as some ineffective fad diet.  But it's not about losing weight.  It's about resetting our bodies to be healthy, and from there we can make "weight loss" decisions.

So excited to have a W30 buddy! @awojahn let's all be buddies! I'm thinking the more support we have, the higher our chances of success. Have you guys looked at the section of the forum that is for logging your W30 experience? Maybe we start a thread there and use it to share food ideas (I hear food boredom is a real thing after about two weeks in) and provide encouragement for each other and others. What do you think? Regardless, this will be challenging but so the reward will be far greater so best of luck!!!

Let me know how everyone's days went!  I made mine through okay, but now I'm getting a caffeine headache from no more Dr. Pepper.  I made the Cod and Mushrooms with Roasted Red Peppers from the Whole30 book (p.242), but I substituted tilapia for the cod.  It was so tasty!!

I started June 1st on my own too. Nice to find some friends here. On day 1 I felt invincible in the morning but had some hypoglycemia before lunch. I think I didn't have enough veggies in my breakfast so my brain was looking for fuel. Today added more veggies and didn't have a problem. Today I also finally got around to taking my "before" pictures. I'm not sure if it was motivating or depressing. But now I have them and hope I'll like seeing them again at the end of the month compared to my new me. :)

I can't believe I dropped the ball on this one! Sorry, all! I love the idea of having multiple buddies to check in with.

My update: It's day 8 for me. I made a mistake the first day. (How could I forget that the bacon I cooked had sugar in it?!?!) Oh well. I've gotten used to putting coconut milk in my morning coffee even though everyone else around me thinks it's really weird.

I've also noticed how much I don't miss dairy products. I was never a big fan of cheese or cottage cheese (eww), and now I really don't have any desire to have some.

Chocolate chips on the other hand? I notice them everywhere! Right before I started my Whole 30 I would snack on chocolate chips "here and there" (read: almost every other day) and would tell myself it was healthy by pairing them with nuts, either cashews or almonds. Yesterday my mom had a handful of chocolate chips to snack on and I was very much tempted to sneak a couple. Yay resisting temptation!

How is everyone else holding up? Any past snack that you are missing or other foods you aren't tempted by?
