Bad Reaction to Gluten

LAP

Recommended Posts

Before Whole30, I had terrible GI issues. My doctors decided it was IBS. On Whole30, I felt great and 95% of those issues went away. Today, I reintroduced gluten and feel horrible. My stomach is going haywire and I just want to lay down. My question is, should I get tested for celiacs or a wheat allergy? Or just know to avoid gluten from now on?

To be diagnosed for coeliac you need to eat gluten for a period of time and then a biopsy to detect the damage it causes (this is much more successful if you haven't been gluten free for a long time as it will slowly undo the damage and make it harder to test). Have a chat with your doctor about testing.

Coeliac isn't just an allergy or intolerance, and like diabetes can have complications if left untreated.

Many people are "silent coeliacs" with symptoms that aren't as obvious or standard, this is the group least likely to be diagnosed.

There are ingredients which contain wheat but are gluten free, but some people don't tolerate wheat or gluten.

Many things with gluten are also high FODMAP, so it's worth reviewing your FODMAP intake as well as it can also create similar symptoms.

FYI people, first of all, there is a blood test for the celiac marker. Secondly, there is the biopsy test of the villi for a true confirmation. The biopsy test is an INVASIVE procedure. Just keep that in mind as you go forward.  My husband tested positive for the celiac marker. The doctor gave him the choice about taking the biopsy because he said it is risky. He recommended Gluten-Free for life and said that if any of his nasty symptoms returned they would then examine further with the biopsy. Nice doctor. Husband has been gluten free for over ten years now and is doing just fine.

We are thankful.

:)
