November Whole30...The Saga Continues

CCLaymon

Recommended Posts

I honestly cannot believe how awful I feel right now.  I'm exhausted, bloated, SO lethargic, and just blah. I just want to go to bed, but I know I will wake up at midnite and be wide awake if I do...  Who knew what a difference the food you eat can make.  Ugh...:(

Can't wait to start up again tomorrow and get back to the energy I had on Day20-ish!

I wanted to post photos of my New Year's Eve table, but if I have to download my camera to my computer, I won't be posting tonight. And I want to post, so no photos, alas! ;)

Fully half the platters on the table were non-compliant food for my husband and kids who are not Whole30ing with me. But half the platters were compliant and full of scrumptious wonderful food for me to enjoy, and I DID! :D New Year's Eve was a complete success! I stayed compliant and did not feel deprived in any way.

New Year's Day, on the other hand, was not so purely successful. As a social occasion, it was wonderful. I enjoyed my friends. My friends seemed to have a good time. We were all relaxed and happy in one another's company. But the dinner did not work for me. The prep for the day was honestly more grueling than the prep for Christmas, partly because I had less time to do it, and partly because I needed to accommodate two vegetarians. I realize that the mistake I made was in allowing the complexities of making my guests feel welcome to shove aside making sure that I was also well taken care of. (I did stay compliant.)

Basically, I was eating soup and salad, while everyone else had between 4 and 10 dishes to choose from. Plus they all had dessert options, and I had none. Poor planning on my part. I definitely felt deprived, and I won't make that mistake again. I did enjoy the afternoon and evening in spite of it. But i would have enjoyed it more, if I'd planned my own food options better. Next time! :D

I saw my osteopath for my foot and knee issues today, and that was a huge boost. He had a medical student with him, and he told her that the reason I was recovering and doing so well was that I was so religiously doing my exercises! It felt good to hear that. He also said, speaking more generally, that I was looking fantastic and that even my eyes seemed brighter. THAT was my Whole30 coming through, I'm sure. I feel really good about my progress and my accomplishments in my work to improve my health.

I suspect that I will be going straight into a third Whole30 when January 20 rolls around, because I doubt my FODMAP issues will have resolved by then. I still have the burning stomach, generally at a low level, but present. Cutting out the FODMAP-containing foods did help, but I can't help wondering if there is something more going on.

I think it is very strange that I feel better when I am lying down or prone, or lifting weights, and that the burning sensation is stronger when I am standing.

I'm going to give it a little more time, but then I think I will seek out a specialist.

@Jessica NG How high is the burning in your stomach? Have you considered gallstones?

@CCLaymon thanks for tagging me in this!!

Day one down, feeling pretty good all things considered. I came down with a cold on the 31st, ended up calling off work for the 1st. No fever or chills today, but still have respiratory stuff and general body aches plus a MASSIVE headache, haven't taken anything because nothing I have is now W30 compliant and I didn't have time to go to the health store and look for something compliant.

No major cravings today which surprises me considering I've got a cold. I spent about three hours cooking this morning, hopefully the food will last a couple days.

All in all, a better day than I expected for day 1.

@Jessica NG It sounds like you were such a trooper and did great over the holidays. Even props from the doctor! Thanks for sharing about the challenges. I always put everyone first, too, and then often end up not having what I need for me. Great reminders. Sorry the stomach issues continue - hopefully as you continue with the FODMAPS it will get better.

@browneyedbeauty wowza - what a tough way to start the whole30! If you can get through that, the rest of the trip will be easier!

I'm headed to the gym! Day 2 for that! Have a great day Whole30's!

@browneyedbeauty Tell me more about gallstones. What are the symptoms? The burning in my stomach is 24/7, but at a low level. It started on day 2 of my first Whole30 (Nov 22) after I had tomato sauce over ground beef for dinner the night before. When I eat onion or garlic (which I have not for a month now), the burning goes to a higher level.

Last w30 I did not have the courage to try the mayo.  Since w30 is all about branching out, I decided to go for it this time around - I am so terrified of the raw egg!  I made some this morning and I used my stick blender (immersion blender) - the blender gets really hot and so my mayo got hot.  Is it still ok?  Is this normal?  It looks delicious and I would love to make some egg salad, BUT....

@mhemm I use my food processor to make mayonnaise, and it does not get hot. So I can't really advise you about that. The chickens from my local farmer (Silky Cow Farm, owned by Nathan Vergin, who apprenticed at the famous Polyface Farm) are currently not laying, due to the low light levels of winter. I absolutely trust the eggs from Nathan's chickens, but feel a little more nervous about grocery store eggs, especially regular grocery store eggs. I've been buying and using eggs produced by Vital Farms. I can tell from the egg yolks that the chickens really are pastured (not just "cage-free"), so I feel comfortable using the Vital Farms eggs to make mayonnaise. And I haven't gotten sick from them! But I don't have the unshakeable confidence that I have in Nathan's chickens.

Question: did you put the warm mayonnaise in the fridge right away? I think the danger is if the mayonnaise stays warm. Then bacteria can and will grow in it. If you chill it down right away - maybe with an hour in the freezer to get it cool quickly, and then transfer it to the fridge - the bacteria wouldn't have a chance to grow. My thoughts. Not sure how helpful that is. ;)

@Jessica NG - Here's a quick link to the symptoms, http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/tc/gallstones-symptoms

My personal symptoms matched the ones in that link the week I went into the hospital but for months before that I was having what I thought to be horrific heartburn or stomach issues. But they'd go away within hours of eating, I never made the connection. What prompted me to go see a Dr. is that I couldn't lay down straight without being in so much pain I'd cry and I have a really high threshold for pain.

What made me think of it was you saying one position makes it better while another makes it worse, the article above indicates you will be in pain no matter what, but certain positions for me (and those friends who've recently gone through the same thing) will make it better.

@mhemm do not fear the mayo. It is a delicious wonder, and truthfully I keep mine for a couple of weeks and have never had a problem. BE BRAVE!!!

@MizRik WHERE ARE YOU???

Today was a good day, but I realized I was seriously under-vegged, so I had to make a trip to the store at lunch time.

My new recipe of the week is lemon chicken. I can't wait to try it! I'll report in on it tomorrow.

How is everyone doing with re-entry?

I am unbelievably grouchy today....I can't even reel myself in....

Makes sense perhaps for day3.

My car is in the shop today, and will need some repairs....Whooot whooot, whhhooooo doesn't love car repairs after Xmas?

Shopped after work which I also dislike doing, got home and had some leftover fish and sweet potatoes, not at all exciting, in fact I barely choked it down. My pup was excited though to have a lil piece.

My psoriasis is oozing and itchy, and I'm thinking to myself, "self, did you really sign on to do this again ?"

This too shall pass, gotta hannggggg onnnnn.

@AliceV Hang in there! Question about your psoriasis ( you need not answer if you prefer not to, of course): is it on your scalp or elsewhere? The reason I ask is that I used to have it on my scalp. Then I did some reading and found out that most conventional shampoos, including those for psoriasis, contain chemicals that are very irritating to the skin in a percentage of the population. I started trying so-called "healthy" shampoos from less conventional sources and found that most of them were just as bad for me, or worse! But I eventually stumbled upon the Terressentials hair wash, which isn't shampoo or soap at all, but made of bentonite clay which cleans the hair. They've changed their formula slightly since I first tried it (4 years ago), and I don't like the new formula quite as well as the original. BUT my psoriasis went away - completely - when I started using it and remains gone to this day. (Just ignore all of the above if it is irrelevant to your situation. ;))

I blogged about my experiences, if you are interested. http://jmney-grimm.com/2012/06/great-soap-etcetera-quest/

@browneyedbeauty Thanks for the link to the symptoms. Mine don't seem to match, in that my pain is mostly very low level, but 24/7 for 40+ days, not worsened by lying down, not appreciably worse after meals. But I don't think it is normal for it to be 24/7 for so long. I am beginning to think that there is something more than the FODMAP issues going on.

@Jessica NG

Thankyou! Very interesting!

Don't mind sharing at all. My patches are on the top/dorsal aspect of both feet, as well as the inner ankle regions.

Once my socks are off and my feet are out of my shoes, I claw incredibly hard to scratch these areas. And they start to bleed in places.  Ooze and hurt  .

I may see some improvement, I'm hoping to anyway, following this clean whole food eating plan. Fingers crossed . DEFINITELY became worse following my 10 day OFF plan adventures.

Had some kombucha tonight as well. Headachy now, will get to bed shortly.

@AliceV I don't have psoriasis, but every summer I used to get this extremely itchy breakout on the back of my hands. It looks a little blistered, and then it would itch like the devil, and I couldn't help myself, and then it looked a little alligator-ish. Maybe TMI, but we're friends now, right? I did find some prescription cream that helped eventually. Anyway, when I'm on the Whole30, I have zero symptoms. I'm hoping the same holds true for you!

Ladies, if we don't pick up our posting rhythm, we're going to be related to page 2 :)

Make it a great day!

I'm here!  I'm having a hard time keeping up with reading and writing posts, cooking, eating, chopping, shopping, and getting my workouts in.  I'm 4 for 4 with workouts for the week so I'm off to a great start this New Year.

Starting to think about what to cook this weekend... maybe something Indian. I love a hot curry in cold weather.  Any suggestions?

Hey All!

Sorry I've been quiet the last couple of weeks.  Was home in Montana for a long holiday and didn't keep up.  Can I join you all on this new thread?  Loved the camaraderie last time!

I started WH30 Round #2 yesterday!  Don't know if it's coming back from the holiday or just that the 'newness' has rubbed off but I'm having trouble being as prepared as I was last time.  Thank goodness I had some compliant meatballs and sauce in the freezer to have for dinners.  (First time having spaghetti squash by the way and it's seriously awesome!  I don't know why it's taken me so long to try it, totally a new fav.)  Anyone else experiencing this?  I need to make sure I get on my menu planning and prep this weekend!

Oh, and I'm super excited...my mom and sister are joining me for Whole30 starting next Monday.  Might have some friends joining too.  I love that those closest too me have seen what a difference Whole30 has made to me and want to join in!

Have a great Wednesday everyone!

Trying to fight the depression, grief, etc.  Drinking black coffee is not hard, but fighting those feeling is so hard for me. A few of you know my story but nobody knows how bad it got and what happened after Steve died.  I have made some progress in the last 2 weeks that I feel really good about.  However, grief is a rollercoaster and there are other issues (that I can't talk about) that often put in back in a deep, dark hole.

Positives - yesterday morning and this morning I wanted to stay in bed but I pushed myself both days.  Tuesday I took a walk outside for 40 minutes.  This morning I did body weight exercises (chair step ups, lunges, planks, etc) in my apartment.  Must do  some type of movement 5 days a week.  When I do body weight exercises, goal is 12 sets of exercises, 10 reps of each - the exercises can be easy, hard or a mixture - I just need to do something.

Food is okay,, all compliant but I haven't followed the recommendations just the rules. I eat when not hungry and have eaten rx bars (when there is no emergency).  For now, I am okay with this.  As time progresses, I will work harder on the recommendations.  My weight is on the low side so extra calories are not bad but I don't like the habit of eating when not hungry.  I believe I have a good metabolism even at the age of 53.   I am doing pretty well with the water.  Aiming for 6 to 8 cups a day.

I have intestinal issues and was put on a low fodmap diet by a gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clivic.  Those Rx bars don't fall under lowfod map.  I just discovered these bars in the past few weeks - bad find for me.  Doc also has me taking miralax every morning and the medication amitiza (high dosage) twice a day.  I have been on this medication since the beginning of October and I would like to get off it.  I have reduced the dosage to once a day.  Doc also prescribed another medicine, Librax, combination of a low level benzo and antispasmodic.  The med is expensive, insurance doesn't cover it and it doesn't work too well so after I finish this bottle (taking it sporadically), I will not refill it.  It is also not a great choice for me because I take Ativan and you are not suppose to mix benzos.

My other positive - I live with 2 loving feline children, a girl with a beautiful heart and a mischievous little boy.

How is everybody else doing?

Day 2 and I am miserable - I am not-so-quietly detoxing all the sugar I indulged in over Christmas!  I feel run-down and have a raging headache.  I am pretty fatigued and lethargic, but my attitude is a solid ok (which is an upgrade from what it was over the weekend) , I think it's because I know how much better I will feel in a couple more days.  Right now I just want to sleep until day 10 or so...  It's been really hard to get up and do yoga, but if I don't do it first thing in the morning - I won't do it at all.

Tonite is taco night!  I LOVE tacos and so does the rest of the family.  I also love that it's super-easy to be compliant and enjoy a flavorful, exciting meal!  I think I am going to buy all of Melissa Joulwan's cookbooks because I just love her style and she hasn't let me down yet!  Did you see that her #1 recipe for 2016 was the chocolate chili?  Followed by mayo?  I've gotta say - those are solid choices.

I am still haunted by little peaks of anxiety since Saturday's fiasco.  I've cut back on caffeine and am trying to stay out of my head.  I am no longer kicking myself, but have accepted the weekend as a learning experience.  Sugar and excess caffeine are not my friends - ever.  Grains and dairy are definitely going to be more closely watched and limited.  So although I dove into holiday food, I did still pay enough attention to learn from my experiences.  Some things just don't really taste that good now that I know how to enjoy REAL food.

@Jessica NG oh boo! Hope you get it figured out soon.

@AliceV Car repairs suck! We just had to repair my car (2013 Insight) - with less than 60 thousand miles on it - all the valves in the engine blew. We lucked out major since the engine is still under warranty. But I'm the queen of having major car repairs at the most inopportune time.

@mhemm I've been having the same realizations about caffeine. I'm cutting back because it just wreaks havoc on my system. But the headaches suck.

Day two was ok for me. Wife and I did some more grocery shopping, and she surprised me by having breakfast made when I got up. She's not fully compliant yet but read all the stuff I taped to the fridge, it was really thoughtful and kind of her to alter our usual breakfast and make it fully compliant. We went to Costco and got some sausages, eggs, and a couple things for the house. Then hit up Whole Foods for some dressings, sauces, and seasonings. I still had a headache and sinus pressure all day, but that seems to be gone today.

I only slept a few hours last night, so we'll see how today goes. So far my sugar dragon has been sleeping peacefully and I only had minor twinges of cravings for sweets while shopping yesterday. I'm curious to see how long this lasts, I'm also not eating fruit as I suspect fruit could be SWYPO for me with sugar.

So far so good, I've gotta say, Whole30 so far is a lot easier to stick to compared with other 30 day diets I've done in the past. I don't feel deprived so far, and I've been able to come up with compliant substitutions for enough meals I already know how to make that this hasn't felt hard. I hope this early momentum helps sustain me when it's not going to feel this easy.

WHOA!!!! Talk about falling off the wagon!! I didn’t just fall off, I blew the wagon up!!  I own all of my poor choices and think the biggest reason it was so bad was because once 30 days were up, all planning went out the window. Bottom line, if you fail to plan you might as well plan to fail.

For the past two days I have been doing a mini detox. Just trying to clear my body of all the excess garbage and fluid I have been retaining. I feel soooooo puffy and bloated it’s crazy. Then starting tomorrow I am back to whole30 eating.

I will not be committing to a 100% compliant whole 30 right now because over the weekend of January 20th, there will be a break in the plan. I am an adult and I am choosing to enjoy a birthday weekend with adult beverages. So since I can’t say that I am actually doing a whole30 right now, can I still hang out with you guys? Other than that weekend I plan to be complaint.

The first week in February I will start a much better planed reintroduction. I leave for Cancun on February 11th and do not want to be sick and miserable there because I didn’t re-intro appropriately.

I did go back and read all the posts I have missed. I would love to comment on all of them, but there was just so much stuff. Sounds like crazy holidays, amazing meals, travel, travel and more travel, some lost keys, some mental exhaustion, family, love, heartache, compliant dinners, not so compliant dinners, writers, readers, own business owners, and whoa! The list goes on and on! I sure missed a LOT!  BUT I am glad to be back!!!!
