I hope everyone is feeling well - I am on Day 11 today and I feel like I really turned a corner yesterday I hope being Day 10 for most of you the same happens today!  Hang in there.  The biggest change for me since starting is how quickly I wake up in the morning - I'm not having any trouble getting out of a bed a few minutes after my alarm goes off - in fact I think most mornings I'm awake a few minutes before.  I noticed that right away - within a day or two of starting - which has been wonderful for morning workouts.  That alone is such a huge NSV for me, it totally makes me question my diet before this program - what the heck was I eating?

I am still having a daily headache which I'm not sure is related to my diet. Anyone else still having them?

I think the biggest struggle for me is the cooking/grocery shopping.  I definitely cut corners where I can to save myself time.  I buy the Zoodles (pre spiralized), guacamole, cored pineapple, pre pattied turkey burgers, etc.  I get that stuff sounds really easy to do/make for some people but it saves me a bit of time during the week and makes the cooking/prep seem more manageable to me.  Just a suggestion!

Wanted to share this recipe with you guys - I made it last night and WOW was it delicious!Sweet Potato, Apple and Pancetta Hash

Wasn't sure about pancetta but I will definitely try it with bacon!!! Thanks for sharing.

And no, I'm not still having headaches. But I'm having a really hard time falling asleep.

Hello! I finally found some other 1/23/17 peeps :). I am feeling pretty good so far. I bit of a headache one day and I did feel a bit tired, especially over the weekend. The warnings about days 8 or so are true. I have some flashes of craving, but I am doing better than I thought. My biggest surprise is finding I like my coffee black, but I had picked up a roast that I liked anyway, but was used to drinking with half an half.

Last night, our daughter had a function with a cookie reception afterwards. We had to take cookies (store bought) which luckily were all eaten. I just stayed on the other side of the room speaking with some other parents.

I need to work on my meal planning so it is a bit easier during the week. I have some ideas though I may try the Meal Plans.

I am on Day 12 and like some other folks, have started waking up naturally in the morning, which is something I never do (I'm a 3-alarm clock kind of person).

When I signed up for this Whole30, I expected to have a normal 30 days without any trips or big events. But now I have 2 major formal events (1 this weekend and 1 next weekend) plus I will be helping my eldlerly parents drive their car from Tampa FL to northern NJ next week. So that means I will be on the road from Saturday Feb 4 through Sunday Feb 12.  At some points I'll have access to a kitchen, but for lots of it, I won't.  I could definitely use suggestions about any restaurants that are easier to eat at for Whole30 (especially those on and off I-95 up the east coast of the U.S.) and how to pull this next 9-10 days off without slipping up on my Whole30. I've come way too far to want to mess it up now!  Thanks.

I've started waking up naturally too, and I have to get up around 0330 for my 0500-1700 shift! I don't understand how W30 makes this happen??

While the cravings have gone down, I do still miss bread, cereal, milk, donuts.... the list goes on lol

I am afraid that after W30, introducing any of those things back into my life will completely ruin the progress I have made, but I also don't feel like I want to 100% stick to the W30 plan forever. Anyone have that internal struggle?

Right now I feel like I could live this program forever, but I will probably end up going to a more Paleo program when I get tired of this.

Hey everyone, the Hartwigs really do know how this works.  I woke up today without my alarm as well.  I am on day 11/3.  (11 since I started & 3 since my accidental slip).  I feel great.

Non scale victories so far:

off insulin completely, more energy, waking without alarm, and I feel leaner.  Like my face is less puffy etc.

I got out my kitchen mandolin last night and sliced a ton of veggies.  I made a baked ratatouille and baked pork chops last night and then roasted squash.  Right now I can't get enough squash and shaved onion.  I eat it with eggs every morning.

Unfortunately I have found a compliant food that becomes uncontrolable for me. . .Almond butter is the bane for me.  I have literally eaten it with a spoon.  So, I won't be buying that again.

Cheers everyone!

I have a couple of NSV I would like to share!
I still need my alarm (but I think that's only because I'm also trying to train myself to wake up 2 hours earlier than I've been used to) but I'm starting to find waking up easier! I'm so hesitant to be excited about this because it seems too good to be true! I've been trying to wake up earlier for months and I have never been able to successfully get it to stick. Today I'm planning to start implementing some healthy evening routines to help with sleep even more. I'll get off my phone earlier and read and drink some tea to wind down and then make it to bed at a good hour.
I started working out on Tuesday. Nothing too fancy but Whole30 is motivating me to want to do other healthy things and I actually have the energy and confidence to feel like I can. (I still don't have amazing energy but I have noticed it improving)

I'm still struggling with giving up certain foods and drinks. I ask myself daily if this is really worth it, but so far I haven't gone off plan and I'm very proud of myself for that.

So far so goo. Love the NSV talk. Mine are: I feel that my joints are healing and I am not in so much pain. I have also noticed more consistent energy throughout the day. I am playing with lunch size so that I do not get home with that really hungry feeling. I have been mitigating that pre-dinner hunger with some nuts and a small bit of fruit or some green olives.

Last night I roasted Brussels sprouts with onions and a chopped apple, drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepepr. finish with lemon zest and juice of lemon. Top with crisped prosciutto. Yum.

Last night sleep was elusive, but I had a cup of coffee in the afternoon which is really a no-no. So this morning the alarm came early, but once I was up my energy was good. I am having no cravings for a mid-morning snack which I would almost ALWAYS have in the past.

Good job all on posting and staying positive.

I'd suggest posting this to another thread or starting a thread of your own because so many of us are newbies! Oh! I see Pinky got you covered!

I have to admit I haven't read the reentry part of the book yet. I'm going to wait 'til I'm closer to the end.

Cindy, I just had Brussels sprouts for lunch. I roasted them but they came out a little mushy. Do you have a secret?

Ok folks, I'm on the road!

This morning I remembered someone else's thread about that dastardly milk that hotel kitchens put in their omelets, so I WATCHED them make my omelet - just eggs, spinach, and tomates. Regular canola oil, but nothing I can do about that.

I have a bag full of Whole30 approved things - nut butters in packets, a small container of olive oil, and epic bars.

Breakfast is a little boring but I am bringing an apple back to my room to have with some almond butter and an epic bar to get some fat in.

I'm on Day 14 now. How are others doing?

Day 14!!

Is anyone else completely tired of eggs?? It seems like traditional breakfast options are very limited and 14 days of eggs for breakfast (plus the occasional lazy dinners) has me hating them!

Halfway through and I cannot wait to get some variety back in my life. Meal prepping makes for a lot of repetition, especially when you have no other options at work.

Sleeping great, waking up is easy. Not sure if my energy levels are truly up or not, as I still fall asleep around the same time as before (early!)

It really helps to stop thinking in terms of breakfast, lunch & dinner, and to start thinking in terms of meals one, two & three - that way anything you eat for meal two or three you can eat for meal one as well...... ;)

I know what you mean.  I still have strong cravings for donuts, ice cream and fast food.  After my Whole30 and reintroduction, I plan to follow Stefanie Ruper's program, "Sexy by Nature."  It's Paleo for women, but much more manageable for the long run.

Ok, ignore my out of order reply there!  Ha!  I'm doing good!  I worked a graveyard shift last night and was pretty nervous about how I'd handle it as I typically snack all night to stay awake.  I packed a satisfying meal and stayed on plan.  There was a HUGE birthday cake sitting in the nurses room all night too.  NsV right there.  The dragon is getting a leash.

Who else is gearing up for complaint Super Bowl parties?  Included in our menu are deviled eggs, shrimp, stuffed mushrooms (there's a good recipe on Real Plans), a veggie dip with compliant Ranch and a pot of bean free chili.

Guad - No secrets - I go for about 400 degrees, trim the ends, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper - I think it took about 20 minutes to get where I like them.

Yay - 2 weeks! Wow.

My biggest surprise is that my husband is staying here in the plan with me! He is a true sugar addict. On Friday he had a moment at breakfast...speaking of egg fatigue!...For a guy who tolerates one scrambled egg this is a challenge. I am trying to get him to consider other foods - I embrace the Meal1, Meal2, Meal3 idea myself.  I also stepped back and asked him to consider his motivation for joining me on this journey. He said about 50% was to support me and the other was to lose weight. I reminded him that even if he doesn't continue, I have the motivation to do this without him.  Right now I feel like seeing him eat "carb-porn" wouldn't even bother me. I've steeled my will by educating myself. Reading It Starts with Food.

Friday we journeyed out for our first restaurant experience at lunch. I explained to the server before we started to order that it might take a while because we are on a food plan that eliminates some things. She was very patient, the food came out as expected and I am glad we made it through okay.

For dinner I adapted a Blue Apron recipe and made it compliant by switching the spaghetti noodles with spaghetti squash - it was light and delish - Spicy Spaghetti Shrimp.

Yesterday I made a Zuppa Toscona - used almond milk for the creaminess and I can't tell the difference. My picky husband said, something tastes different, but I swear it was not the almond milk that did it. My guess is that it is that I used homemade chicken stock instead of my usual "Better than Bouillon base".

Today lunch will be out again - wish us luck! Tonight is the Superbowl. Salt and Vinegar chicken wings are on the menu for this evening.

I am still not where I need to be with exercise - my freaking ankle is still tender - this may really require professional medical attention!

Keep focused on the NSVs my friends!

Half way there!  Way to go everyone!!

NSV for me over the weekend...my son who's almost 2 finally ate scrambeled eggs! :) A big part of this journey for me is about him and making sure every single day we offer him plenty of healthy whole foods.  Around the time he turned 1 he completely stopped eating vegetables and most fruits, we've gotten into a rut of just giving him foods that we know he will eat.  Since starting Whole30, I love that everyday I have plenty of healthy food prepared that I can quickly fill up his plate with too.

Is anyone else still having headaches?  I think I've had a headache every single day thus far, day 16 for me today.  I've read a lack of salt and water can be the issue and I've been keeping on eye out and getting plenty of both of those. I also ready somewhere to up the starchy veggies, anyone have any idea how much of those we should be shooting for each day.  I've added in some sweet potatoes, potatoes, and have some squash at home to cook up.  I've been shooting for 1/2 of a sweet potato or potato each day the last several days and still no improvement in my headaches.

You're probably fine with the amount of starch you're eating right now. So long as you're getting adequate water & salt I'd look to increase your fat content - this should put a stop to the headaches.

jmcbn, thanks so much for the advice.  I will experiment with the fat content next and hopefully that is what I've been missing.  I appreciate your feedback!
