That looks so good .... omg!! Damn fine chicken! Thanks for the tip on the Costco bacon - I've been looking all over .... was just about to head to Whole Foods tomorrow but would rather not... I can never get out of there without a full cart.

Kombucha - the Whole30 rule is to find one without ADDED sugar. It takes sugar for the fermenting but some brands add sweetener after fermentation. I found GTs Kombucha -  no sugar in the ingredients.  I think I've probably read just about every forum post on Kombucha to make sure it's compliant and GTs meets the specs.  GTs offers so many varieties so I've just started trying them. Trilogy is really good.

Hang in there everyone!

thanks for the kind words of support guys! Feeling much better today, hopped right out of bed and felt great during my workout, so that is a little plus! I think I could use a little more sleep each night, but it's hard to fit everything in! Only so many hours in the day :)

how is everyones pre/post workout meal stuff going? I've been doing coffee with nutpods (if you haven't tried theses- they are awesome! I don't really like the taste of coconut and although they are coconut/almond mix, they don't have a strong coconut flavor) along with a few macadamia nuts and 1 hardboiled egg 30-45 mins before my morning workout. Afterwards (as soon as possible, before I shower) I do 1 egg white + a few bites of sweet potato or a squeezable pouch of baby food (weird I know but easy and pretty tasty! I've been using http://www.ellaskitchen.com/ellas_product/carrots-apples-parsnips/). Then I have meal 1 after I've showered and gotten ready which ends up being only about half a hour after the post workout meal. This has been working for me! I know the post workout ideally doesn't include fruit, but at the gym the squeezable pouches are so much easier than packing up sweet potato and eating it cold in the locker room!

@Mariannne love the idea of infrared sauna. I'm going to see if I can find one!

Hope everyone else is having a great day 11!

Happy day 11 all! :)

@Miranda E: thanks for the food porn! ;)

@MevansI love that. I need to find a good brand of kombucha. I've been interested in it for a long time but the high sugar content always turned me off. I'll check them out ;) I've read it's fairly easy to make your own!

@egmartin171so happy to hear you're great today! And wow... Amazing you figured out the pre/post workout meals. You should post that on the Whole30 for Athletes forum! I wish we had those Nut Pods up here in Canada!!! Maybe I should quit my job and sell something similar up here ;)

I feel like i rested a lot last night but I'm still exhausted today. It may not be W30 related. Tonight will be more chill time and early bed. My energy is coming back soon! :)

Happy weekend all!

I hate to report I've had tummy troubles the past 24 hours - lots of stomach knots, heartburn and burping like crazy. (Gross!)

I'm pretty sure I created the perfect storm for this and can't really blame the whole30. I had a personal training session yesterday morning and we did tons core work, then I went for a Thai massage and she worked over my abdomen like crazy, then I was super late eating lunch (it was 4:30!). So after that late lunch I was in some serious gut distress - and to top it off I had an intense stressful rehearsal! (Oddly enough the whole30 daily email was all about stress - one day too late for me lol) And did I mention  the menstrual cramps? Yeah those  too. So pretty much my entire abdomen was a mess!

GT's  gingerade kombucha seems to help settle my tummy but does anyone else have any whole30 remedies for upset tummies? I would normally pop a   couple Tums but that's off limits.

On a positive note - normally I am bloated at this time of the month but I put on some jeans that were definitely not fitting before Day 1 and they slipped right on. Yay! So another positive pants post (PPP) like @bronnyd and @sooladybug.

@Mevans love your "martini" - I don't think it's SWYPO at all. Also jealous that those appear to be flowers, *outside* behind that delicious drink. We are dying to get out on patios here!!

@egmartin171 thanks for posting the pre- post WO meal details. I've found it tricky myself. I've been going to the gym at 9:30 after eating meal 1  at 8:30. So I can't see eating yet again before working out! I've been eating post WO but if I eat a meal size protein I certainly don't feel like eating lunch for quite some time. I think I'll make it a smaller snack like you have.

@Mariannne I made the green coconut soup. Very yummy and a great way to use up green languishing in the fridge. Thanks for sharing it!

I also made salads in mason jar batches this week - this is the Italian chopped salad from against all grain. (http://againstallgrain.com/2014/09/12/italian-chopped-salad/) I kept the dressing separate and topped with chicken when I dumped out on the plate. The beets turned the prosciutto into a garish pink colour but otherwise the chopped stuff kept well.

@harpchick love the salad in mason jars!  Perfect lunch to take to work!

We're into day 14 - still hanging in there, but starting to experience some food boredom/stress.  Starting my meal planning for the week which I hope will help.  In the past we usually just winged it day by day so this is new for us.

Experiencing more gut stress yesterday and today - bloating, etc. but not too bad.  Definitely feeling flatter stomach and 'skinny'clothes starting to fit better - yay!  So hoping this plan works so I can start regular hard workouts again without seroius pain!  Plan to go for a short ski today before all the snow is gone (very warm and melty here lately but we still have lots of snow).

Happy weekend everyone and thanks for all the tips!

G'morning everyone! It's gonna be a sunny weekend here in PGH and I'm finally going to plant my flowers and herbs! Yay!

So weird - yesterday it snowed. Today it's in the 60s, tomorrow in the 70s. Go figure!

I've been having cravings again - just missing foods: breadchocolatepizzacroissantwineetc.etc.etc. Yesterday I found myself doing errands and wanting to stop and pick up a freshly made pizza on the way home. Also really craving French fries and even tater tots. Snacky pop in your mouth foods. They're just cravings. No big deal (I tell myself).

@harpchick sorry to hear you're feeling funky in the tummy! Sparkling H2O with a little lemon helps me. Actually, lemon water in general helps me - like a small cup of H2O with a couple Tspns lemons juice. Lemon is alkalizing and can help with acidy stomach. Thanks for those awesome mason jar salad pics and recipe. I really like this idea and am going to try it this week. LOVE salads - crisp green crunchy goodness.

Also have all this wonderful bone broth and will be doctoring that up with goodies to make a healthy pho. I'll be using shredded zucchini for the noodles. I want this to be easy and so will be prepping ings ahead of time - never done pho like this before with zucchini noddles and pre prepping everything so we'll see how it goes. I'll keep you posted. :) Also will be trying @Mariannne's green coconut soup at some point.

@Mevans what a fantastic idea and pic of kombucha martini!!! Funny how putting something sparkling in a martini glass makes all the dif. ;)

Also appreciate @Miranda E's damn fine chicken pic and share. Definitely checking that out.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. Onwards!

Happy Day 13 All!

I've finally turned a corner. I'm feeling back to my normal self. I am sleeping better too -- and the sleep is SO deep! I love it. I am feeling happier and that is the most important part. I don't even care about the food boredom anymore. It's funny, my theme for this W30 seems to be taking it easy and relaxing more. It looks like I'm breaking up with Type A Marianne. Good riddance! My mood has picked up but my energy is more calm/zen than my usual 'full tilt'. I don't even miss the full tilt. hahaha

I've had some gut distress in the last 24 hours, too. I'm not timing my meals-to-yoga properly. It seems I need a good 5 hour break BEFORE doing yoga. Even a small snack will upset my stomach during the practice. I walked out of my yoga this morning ready to vomit, I was pale as a ghost, and shaking towards the end of class. I had a coffee about 2 hours before so it shouldn't have really affected my yoga-game but it did! Maybe I wasn't nourished enough. Idk and I didn't even care... i got home and went right to bed (for more sleep) :P This happened last night in my yoga class, too. I don't want to experience that again!!!

I have a tonne of greens left in my fridge again so I'll likely make another Green Soup this week. Or maybe i could freeze them and use it next week! I really feel like a paleo chili. Maybe something like this. I'd also like to make some kimchi and a chai-flavoured kombucha this weekend. Do I make my own SCOBY or buy one?! That's the question!!

@MevansI love the kombucha in the martini class. I noticed today that the kombucha was on sale at my grocery store. Tbh I normally just have still water as a beverage. I checked the ingredients and the label. Lo and behold GT's! I bought it and loved it! This would be a lovely summer drink ... It's not nearly warm enough yet! We did get snow on Friday morning. lol I was wondering if I can retire my winter boots yet. Nope!! Sometimes you just never know with the weather. I walked out today and noticed people on patios. It's funny how people just can't wait for summer. I also saw many people walking with ice cream cones! It was a high of 12C (54F) today. Not ice cream or patio weather yet!

@harpchickLove the food porn. Thank you ;)

@bronnydOMG I love pho. I haven't had it in ages... would be so yummy with your fresh been bone broth. :)

I hope everyone's having a great weekend!  More food porn please! It keeps me going ;)

Happy Saturday!

I've felt kinda bloaty the last couple of days...but I had some cramps yesterday so it's probably related to that...stupid lady parts. Or maybe all the cabbage I've been eating. This is my new favorite recipe. The sauce SO GOOD. Its good with leftover damn fine chicken and a good dresding for broccoli slaw. Obviously use ghee for the butter.

http://anoregoncottage.com/roasted-cabbage-wedges-with-onion-dijon-sauce/#_a5y_p=3808169

We've had it too nights in a row and I'll probably have it several days this coming week.

It hasn't snowed here...but is very melty. We went to the off leash park in Sherwood park. It was an adventure. Very muddy. We had to circle back because we were not equipped in the footwear department for the 6" of water on the exit path.  Turns out it was a marsh.

Also, i learned yesterday, that the roast chicken at Walmart is not compliant! Which sucked because it was late when I popped in to grab one for dinner. Had to cook chicken when I got home instead. So had dinner after 9

@Miranda E thanks so much for this ! I'm going to make as appetizer for Easter. I just read plantain chips are not allowed anymore - did you guys read that? Does it apply to those of us half way thru?

Yes, it applies.  As of April 1, regardless of where you are in your Whole30, no more plantain chips.  If you ate them before, then you get immunity on the consumption from prior to April 1, but everyone has to follow the rules going forward.  Sorry.

Wow I feel like I haven't sat down for the last 3 days!  It feels like every spare minute we have is taken up by meal prep.  You just finish lunch on Saturday and you have to start working on supper prep.  Or shopping for meals... aaarrrgghh.  I love everything we're eating and doing, I just wish it wasn't so time consuming :(

I'll admit that I've been experiencing some cravings this last couple of days.  I have stayed compliant but I had a couple moments were I really wanted something off plan!  We went for a nice long walk in nature yesterday morning and that really helped.

I think my boyfriend and I had a bit of a SWYPO moment yesterday.  He wanted to make our own potato chips and he planned to deep fry them....  I panicked!  I grabbed my phone in the grocery store and pulled up the whole30 site so I could explain that deep frying is not compliant.  He agreed and we kept shopping no worries.  We get home and he was looking stuff up and then next thing I know he's in the kitchen slicing and working.  He comes back about 15 mins later with a plate of homemade potato chips with salt and vinegar made in the microwave.  These things were dynamite and I finally had to tell him not to make another batch because I realized this is very much a no brake food for me!

We did our meal plan for this week and ventured out from the Whole 30 Cookbook to some online recipes I found.  Tonight we made spaghetti squash jambalaya.. it was amazing!  We're definitely going to make that one again.  We prepped the Damn Fine Chicken from Nom Nom Paleo http://nomnompaleo.com/post/4207543396/damn-fine-chicken and made a breakfast casserole for the morning http://www.paleorunningmomma.com/paleo-breakfast-casserole-whole30/   We're tired!!!

The Damn Fine Chicken calls for Red Boat Fish Sauce but we couldn't find any here and the fish sauce we did find wasn't compliant... not sure what to substitute for it.

Anyhow I'd better get to bed soon, 5:30am comes awfully early and I still have laundry to fold!  Hope ever is doing well and staying strong!!

@sooladybug you can leave the fish sauce out of most recipes, or sub anchovies.

For the time everything takes, you'll start to get faster at some things, especially if you really didn't cook much before. You can also cook ahead if you don't mind some leftovers. If you're grilling or baking chicken for one meal, go ahead and cook enough to use the next day to top a salad or make egg foo yung with (http://meljoulwan.com/2010/08/08/paleo-egg-foo-yung/). Keep hard boiled eggs, cans of tuna or salmon, frozen burger patties you can cook from frozen, frozen vegetables, and olives on hand so if you get home too exhausted to cook, you can quickly pull together a meal. It's great for food to taste good, but your meals don't all have to be something special. Sometimes you just need to fuel your body quickly, and that's okay.

do people have good ideas for breakfast on the go? I love eggs and don't get sick of them but my normal scramble isn't portable or great cold, and I have a busy next few weeks, so suggestions welcome!

I like blended soups and something like meatballs or chicken drumsticks/pieces, with a bit of mayo for dipping on the side. You can keep the soup in a flask & most proteins are good at room temperature. Or variety of lettuce/steamed cabbage wrap filled with salad & your protein of choice works well too.

Hi all - I've been all over the internet and Whole30 sites for Easter menu ideas.  What's everyone doing?  Any great suggestions?

Anything you make for a Sunday dinner you can have... there have already been Easter discussions on the forum so have a look around.  There's also a 'fancy meal' plan in the Whole30 book and It Starts With Food.

Guys, I started my first Whole30 with you on the 27th but I have been only lurking on this topic ever since.

I just came here to say congratulations everybody for our Halfway day :)

I am celebrating by going out with my friends after eating my beautiful dinner (guac + chicken breast + spinach)
