Question about pre and post workout meals?

Are pre and post workout meals a must?

Here is my situation.   I have hypothyroidism and I take my thyroid medication first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.   I get up early (like 5:30).  I am supposed to wait at least 30 minutes before eating.  During this period of time, I get my workout in.   Then, after I work out, I eat breakfast, then get ready to go to work.   If I had a pre workout meal, I would be getting up at 5 .am and this would likely rob some of my sleep (I am an 8 hour girl, need my 8 hours!).   After I workout, I need to eat breakfast so I can get on to work.  Also, I am not sure that I could stomach a post workout meal and breakfast right on top of each other.   Are the pre and post workouts a must?   I have found I won't workout after work, so morning is my sweet time.

Thyroid Medication

Changes in the thyroid gland occur gradually. It takes about six weeks to see the full effect of any thyroid hormone medication changes. As chronic hypothyroidism (low thyroid) responds slowly to medication changes, it changes slowly with dietary interventions as well. It is still a good idea to check in with your doctor before embarking on the Whole30, and might be worthwhile to look at thyroid hormone levels before and after the program. This is especially true if you have an autoimmune thyroid condition like Hashimoto’s, which may respond well to a gluten-free diet and addressing any gut issues.

Your doctor knows what's best for you as far as your meds on an empty stomach with the amount of exercise you're doing along the pre/post mini meals.

As many of the posters have said in the links up above, food changes, weight changes, exercise changes, meal timing changes....everything can affect the way the thyroid operates.

Given the choice, post-WO is more important than pre-, and even then it's more beneficial to weight-lifting than cardio.  Keep an eye on your overall energy, mood, and performance, and adjust your food accordingly.
