I almost blew it today. I wasn't even thinking and almost popped a mint candy (available at an event I was working). I guess I don't think of mints as food. I had it unwrapped and was about to put it in my mouth when I realized, "Oh #&%$#! I can't have this!" Luckily I stopped myself in time. It would be horrible to start over something I didn't really crave and picked up on total autopilot.

Great job catching yourself!!! :) that's the goal - change how we think about food - sounds like it's working!

Wow, really hit with carb flu or withdrawal symptoms or something.  Yikes.  I feel awful.  Any suggestions for pushing through?

Is this your Day4-5 Kill All the Things??  LOL... last night, I had such a bad craving, and since there are other people who use my cabinets, I almost binged on everything terrible in there, and envisioned oreos and pringles and fruit snacks sliding into my stomach... BUT, I just had a lara bar, and made a giant cup of peppermint tea, and it seemed to calm my craving.

I woke up pretty angry, and when I originally read the Whole30 book I thought this day started like 6-10, but there it was, big bold letters, "Days 4 to 5: Kill all the things". The books suggestions are to make your meals a little bigger, or bring an approved snack to work, or eat sweet potatoes... I'm hoping the cravings will subside.

I don't feel physically bad though. I did have a headache this morning but I drank some black coffee and it subsided. Hopefully you continue to push through!!

Funny, I didn't use my inhaler during cardio today either!! High five!

Craving pretty bad today tho... and not sweets. A beer. A soft pretzel. Ugh! It's gonna be a long night!

I normally brush my teeth  right away after dinner, this way I don't have cravings.  I read somewhere that the peppermint flavor helps with cravings, I am not sure if this is true but it works for me.  I normally have dinner between 6:30 and 7:30pm and eat nothing else until 7:30 -8am next morning.

the same thing happened to me yesterday.  I was serving tostitos to the boys and I almost put one in my mouth.  I normally don't eat them but everytime I serve them to the boys I eat one... Now I am realizing how many things we do/eat just because we are so use to do them daily.  I'm glad you realized just on time as I did too. :)

I am definately having a hard time with protein as I am a vegetarian and not a fish eater. I don't want to modify for beans or tofu, so I am going to be bold and try some tuna mashed with avocado, and perhaps some salmon cakes with the tarter sauce recipe to get in more protein without eating a dozen eggs a day O_o

Also- I have been super proud at how much water I have been drinking, around 100oz a day! It used to be an accomplishment to drink 24oz ;)

overall I have been feeling great

Im not a fan of tuna or Salmon, but have made the cakes and love them.  Mine usually turn out a bit dryer so sometimes I make mayo or other sauce to have with them.  I hope you do like them.

Make sure you are staying hydrated,  also while you are detoxing from sugars and carbs, I read that is very important to up your salt intake.  Maybe you want to drink some broth or make a soup and add just a bit more salt than normal.  I hope you are feeling better today.

Hi There- I too hit a TERRIBLE carb flu over the last couple days - it was absolutely terrible! and all I wanted to do was sleep I recommend coconut water and some Whole30 approved carbs! Potatoes were my saving grace - I mashed them with some almond milk and ghee last night, and they were so wonderful. Best I've felt in the last 3 days! :)

I actually sat down and ate breakfast this morning (instead of eating in the car)! This allowed me to smother my egg and hash brown cups in roasted red pepper sauce. Since I've been hungry before lunch, I also added a butternut squash soup* (I adapted the recipe from one on AllRecipes that I love to make it Whole30 compliant). And now it seems I've hit the sweet spot with my healthy fats because I'm not really hungry yet (as of noon), which I was getting hungry around 11. And I have chicken salad to look forward to with a side of bell pepper and salsa. Plus some fruit.  (In the lunch/bento box reward I earned for making through 3 days.) :D

And to my delight I'm actually in a good mood. Perhaps my kill all the things will show up later today or over the weekend. Or not at all.

*The recipe I use is onion (i usually just put in a whole onion), sautéed in butter (I used clarified), butternut squash (I fortunately had some already pureed on hand and I just adjust the amount of everything else to match that), chicken bouillon and water (I always used boxed broth and this time I used my new batch of bone broth), thyme (original recipe calls for marjoram, which I've never kept on hand), salt and pepper, a little bit of cayenne, and here's the kicker--cream cheese. The original recipe calls for 2 WHOLE PACKAGES (ugh!). I love cream cheese, but never did that. I always used 1/4 to 1/2 of one package. And now of course, I substituted with coconut cream. Worked perfectly! Here is the link with the actual amounts of everything: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/12974/butternut-squash-soup/

It's really a very forgiving recipe, pretty hard to mess up. I wouldn't necessarily attempt without an immersion blender though if you're staring with a whole squash. I've burnt myself too many times transferring hot liquid to a blender and back.

I really love the idea of adding soup to my breakfast for added veggies and healthy fat, so if anyone has any recipes they'd be willing to share and/or link to (careful of the forum's copyright rules) I'd appreciate your ideas. :)

Is it too late to join this group??  I started on the 22nd and so far so good!  This is my first time doing this and I am super excited, but also know it's going to get hard and I'll need some support.  I am a mom of three and work full time in an office.  I have been in the office setting for about a year now and quit smoking on Jan 1st.   The combination of those two things has led me to start eating stuff I never would have eaten before... tons of bread, sweets, packaged processed food, way less veggies... and I'm feeling the effects!  Gained weight, but more importantly my stomach has been getting worse and worse.  IBS stuff, also, achy joints, and psoriasis type skin stuff getting worse.

SO, I am so excited for this restart!  It feels like exactly what I need!  I am excited about the no weighing or measuring too!  I would have probably weighed myself 5 times already and starting focusing on the weight aspect instead of the health, so that is refreshing for me!

But I am scared too of the inevitable temptation and hope to find some support  here!  And food ideas.  I am only on day 4 and sick of morning eggs!  I seriously felt like I was going to throw up as I ate mine this morning, but I didn't have a back up meal so had to power through!  But i did make the simplest, easiest shrimp stirfry last night, that I'll have for lunch today :)

I'm sorry you are feeling bad. Have you ever tried loose leaf herbal tea? I didn't think I'd like it (because I generally don't like tea) but there are some great flavors out there, including ones that could be soothing to the stomach. Herbal blends don't actually contain real tea, so they don't have the same taste (which I didn't really realize until I tried them). And I can drink them without any added cream or sweetener. I have a set of green tea (which is actual tea, but very light tasting) at my desk that I'm drinking in lieu of the insanely creamed and sweetened coffee that I prefer.

Disclaimer: Remember to read the labels (as always) as some with fruit especially may have added sweetener.

Day 4. I've been doing ok. Biggest issue is craving for sweets just before bed. I used to have 1 or 2 2"x2" dark chocolate squares (think 80%). Last night I had a couple of dried apricots. That did not do the trick. A handful of almonds and I felt better. After reading today's Whole30 Daily I will pay more attention to cravings versus hunger.

Monday I saw the back specialist. He didn't tell me anything new, which was depressing, BUT it did provide more incentive to loose the extra weight I have put on over the last three years and to keep on Whole30 to see if I have any inflammation that I can reduce.

I have to say a thank you to my husband who is on this journey with me. He has been doing the heavy lifting on cooking even though yesterday and today he has felt pretty bad.

Welcome. It's never too late to start. Offices can be hard. A little self-talk may help. If you are getting up from your desk and know you are going to walk by something try reconfirming your commitment to yourself before you get up. Most of the stuff isn't that good anyway.

Good practical advice, thank you!  Also I know it's annoying to be the "food restriction/diet" person at work, but i told everyone what i was doing, so hopefully that keeps me more accountable.  Already people have started to offer me things and then stopped themselves :)

Hi LacyJean!  Not too late!  Congrats on making it to Day4 without any support! This thread seems to be pretty awesome so far, I know we will all make it to the end :)

I work in an office too an am an ex-smoker so I feel your pains. Stay strong!  Just remember the cigarette withdraw cravings... food ones aren't nearly that bad!  If you quit smoking this should be a breeze.  And also way to go on your total health overhaul!  Your body will certainly thank you!!

Thank you!  and yes I think doing this so close to the quitting smoking will {hopefully} keep the cravings in perspective.  Quitting smoking was for sure the hardest thing I've ever quit!

Thank you for the support!  So excited to be here and on this journey!

I've been telling people it's more of a food experiment, to see if I have any food sensitivities, and people seem to be much more supportive than just someone dieting again (there are a lot of yo-yo'ers in this office).

Cravings before bed has been my biggest issue too! I tried a raisen/almond combo last night which did work but after i realized that even though its technically still Whole 30, I was definitely still feeding the sugar dragon.

Gonna try just brushing my teeth tonight! And eat a little more with each of my meals.

I also need to learn that going to bed is not a bad thing. Lol

The need for sleep, sleep deprivation, insomnia and being overtired all manifest as cravings for sugar. Just so you know. Just.......go to sleep. :)

I'm late to the party here, but I started my whole30 journey on Monday!  I'm just now getting a moment to log in and see the forum and catch up on what I've been missing out on. I am very excited about this and definitely need this to help me slay my sugar dragon!!!

I highly recommend what I cooked last night...I doubled the recipe and it took way more than 20 minutes, but it was worth it. Ate it with the mashed cauliflower recipe from the Whole30 cookbook. Delicious!

So far I'm not feeling the kill-all-the-things feelings I felt last time around. That's nice. But we'll see what happens tomorrow...

Hi Everyone,

I started on May 23rd, so I am a day behind y'all, but close enough! This is my second whole 30, and I am very motivated, mainly because I have gained 14 lbs since I did it last year.  WTH?!?!? The take aways I got from my first whole 30 were to stop drinking soda (haven't had it since April 17th, 2016!) and to stop adding sugar to my coffee (totally grosses me out now, where I used to have to have it).

My goals for this Whole 30 are to get another take away item (or two) from this round, lose the 14 lbs for summer, hopefully reduce inflammation in my back, and take a month off from drinking alcohol.

I am also taking the Goop "High School Genes" vitamin pack alongside my Whole 30 to hopefully reset my metabolism??? Does anyone have any experience with these vitamins?

So far, this round 2 seems easier than round 1, but let's see how tomorrow goes! ;)

Technically these vitamins are not compliant as each one has 12.5mg of added inositol which is a sugar alcohol.  That aside, these aren't the type of thing that we want you taking with the Whole30... how will you know if the whole30 made you feel better or these pills packed with caffiene and other things that we're not entirely sure what their effect is.

Omg team welcome to day5!! We made it through the work week!!

I had a dream last night that I drank from a bottle of ranch dressing. Lmao!! I don't even like ranch.

Last nights dinner was turkey burgers on eggplant "buns". My boyfriend is not doing the program with me but will partake in meals, what a good sport!! I even offered to get his own real roll but he declined. It came out really good!! And I made potato wedges and kale chips.

This morning I made a cauliflower and black olive omelet. Little worried about tonite since I have to go right to my second job after work and won't be home until around 2am, with no place to store food, I will have to search for complaint items somewhere on the way. I am gonna stay strong tho!!

Good luck today everyone! And keep focused through the long Memorial Day weekend!!! :)

Pack some fruit, nuts, veggies and can of tuna or chicken.

Ideas:

bananas, apples, pears, lemons

peaches, cherries, nectarines

almonds / walnuts / cashews

carrot sticks, celery sticks, zucchini (raw is delicious) lettuce, tomatoes, green onions

grated coconut

Canned meat: tuna, salmon, chicken

pack it and once there make this:

chop up canned chicken in bowl, add chopped green onions, and lots of fresh squeezed lemon juice, salt and pepper.

add grated coconut.

wrap in lettuce leaves like a chicken wrap.

Enjoy!
