Alana in Canada
What are these? And, where would I find them? The recipe I was looking at helpfully offers "Bragg liquid aminos" as a possible substitue. Same problem. I'm also curious--why are these items in a recipe? What do they do? I noticed the cocnut aminos are in some of the recipes in ISWF, too.
Susan W
They spunk up a food a little bit like soy sauce. I don't think Brags is okay. The coconut aminos are fermented coconut nectar. They are usually with the ethnic or health food stuff.
Tasha
Alana not sure where you are in Canada but Planet Organic in Edmonton carries them, so maybe another oragnic store? They are also online at a place called something like Lo Carb Canada or something. It's like soy sauce. Braggs IS soy but doesn't have wheat (so maybe an post w30 option if you choose to have soy in your life).
Alana in Canada
We have Planet Organic! I'll take a look as soon as I get a chance. Thanks for the heads up about the Bragg. It's for a recipe for BBQ sauce. Looking forward to roasting some ribs this weekend.
Carlaccini
Alana - If you can't find it in planet organic there is a Canadian online store that has them - upayanaturals. Shipping is free in canada if you order enough products over $100. They also carry the coconut pure wraps as well.
DocIKY
I had the same reaction when I first saw a recipe calling for coconut aminos! You should be able to find them in any whole foods type grocery store, likely in the same area you would find soy sauce. Bottle even looks the same! Alana in Canada
Thanks everyone! I had to go to a new never-before heard of health food store to get my bottle of coconut amminos but I did get it and used it in the recipe for BBQ sauce I found. I used it for some pork ribs. (First time I ever made ribs!) They turned out a bit tough, just a bit, but yum.
AmyS
Aha! I just found a company that makes coconut aminos (in the U.S. only? not sure). Coconut Secret. I went to their website and found that the two natural food stores close to me (should) stock it. Also, reviews on amazon are awesome. Looking forward to getting some soon! AmyS
OK so I picked up my first bottle of coconut aminos! But then I was afraid to take them into the restaurant tonight. I need a dedicated small shaker bottle. Once I use up this next jar of cumin... I'm pretty excited about this stuff! I know I'm supposed to limit soy (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) but I live in a culture that uses soy (and sugar!) in pretty much everything. I'm looking forward to having a substitute for soy sauce that will work in prepared dishes and marinades.
Breezygoat
I just spotted these for the first time at Whole Foods the other day. I'm looking forward to trying them, and psyched to hear they're tasty.
Susan W
I wasn't crazy about them immediately. I think I am just SO used to the strong, salty flavor of soy. I love it now. I also love their coconut vinegar which I just found the other day. I used it in my creamed kale that we are having with our W30 turkey dinner tonight.
