Bloating and nightmares

Recommended Posts

So...just finishing day 3 and I have never felt so bloated and since I have started I have the worst nights EVER, what is going on? The bloating makes me look like I am 6 months pregnant and I can't button any of my pants! I have been eating everything right: soft boiled eggs for breakfast with 1/2 cup homemade sauerkraut, my soup for lunch (beef, carrots, celery, onion and kale with a teaspoon of ghee in it ) and normal dinners: pan fried fish, roasted sweet potato and salad, next day steak and salad and tonight beef, salad and steamed snow peas. Could this be die-off: bloating and nightmares...anyone else experience this?

Hi Feel Better Me! I'm midway through Day 4 and suddenly experiencing the same kind of terrible bloating (thank goodness I wore pants with some room today!). I'm going to add my two cents here and maybe we can both find some help?

TBH, before starting Whole 30 I had intermittent problems with bloating but this feels more severe to me. It feels as though I might spontaneously combust!

I am terrible at following rules so I will just put this out here and ask that someone help me understand where I am going astray?

Breakfasts: every morning I have 2 boiled eggs and a hash made with "whole 30 approved" bacon, sweet potato, and a small amount of russet potato and onion (all food is organic\grassfed\pasture etc)

I absolutely LOATHE the taste of water. I have been drinking decaf sweet tea with lemon for literally YEARS. All day. Every day. So this has been the hardest part for me. I've been drinking coconut water, infused water with fruit and veggies, cactus water, hint water, essentially any beverage that does not appear to break the rules?

Lunches: are usually left overs from the dinner before. Today I had leftover lamb curry that I made with lamb for stew fried in ghee with salt and pepper, cooked with sweet potato and an entire pound of spinach cooked down in coconut milk and curry powder.

Dinner: I baked a whole chicken with some oil on the skin, salt and pepper and lemon juice and celery and onions in the cavity for moisture. I ate that with green beans cooked with compliant ham.

Up to this point I have had no issues. Today however, after breakfast I had half a small apple and half an avocado with lemon juice and salt and pepper. A few hours later, my stomach blew up and it's really very uncomfortable!

I did have a snack yesterday, about 6 small, organic unsalted hazelnuts and 2 pieces of re-hydrated fruit (1 piece apricot 1 piece fig organic).

Before Whole 30 I ate TONS of sugar. I expected to have sugar withdrawals\headaches. I did not expect to have this terrible stomach bloating\pain\but not gas, at least not yet?

I am very open to critique! I am doing this to feel better. I think years of eating very poorly have led to a decline in my health, my A1C is 5.9 so very close to pre-diabetes. I would like to turn it around with diet and exercise.  Thank you!

Okay so the water thing... keep trying... keep mixing more plain water and less 'non plain' until you're drinking plain, clear water.  Your body needs it... yes, you CAN get through life with all manner of flavors and juices but the best thing for your body so that it doesn't have to filter is plain water.  Also, coconut water is basically fruit juice so I'd get rid of that right away... it's also very likely to be causing bloating.  Water infused with veggies and fruit is great, just make sure it's water infused with fruit/veggies and not what amounts to a whacky concoction that's more fruit/veggies than water... it should still be mostly clear :)

Your breakfast didn't have enough protein... eggs when they are your sole source of protein are as many as you can hold in one hand without dropping.  The bloating from this am could have been from the hardboiled eggs (they can be harder to digest than other ways of cooking eggs) or the onions... try removing the onions in your breakfast tomorrow.

If you're going to snack between meals because you're actually hungry (you could eat bland steamed fish and broccoli) then eat protein and fat and ideally veggies in a smaller 'mini meal'.  Nuts and fruit on their own are not going to help and nuts and dried fruit can cause bloating and digestive upset.

Thank you for your evaluation!

I didn't know fruits and nuts cause bloating, I will cut them out immediately.  Not sure how this factors in but should probably mention it - I was recently dx'd with low blood sugar (i have a pending appt with a specialist since my blood sugar is low but my A1C is relatively high) so I worry when I start to feel weak and faint-y.

Before, my breakfast would be a glazed donut and a decaf starbux frap, so...comparatively, my coconut water was pretty low in sugar! :D But of course, still too much sugar to replace plain water, esp. when trying to reduce\elim. sugar from my diet!

I really am trying to get myself used to drinking plain water. I start with plain water and try to force myself to drink and start getting thirsty, so I end up finding some way to make it more palatable to avoid getting dehydrated.

Also surprising it wasn't enough protein (see donuts and starbux above) since it's so much more than I was eating before. I'm not sure how many more eggs I could eat at breakfast. Maybe I'll try scrambled instead? I do have really small hands (I wear childs sized gloves so I can't really hold much in one hand) so I was trying to follow the hand illustrations on portions.

I will cut out onions too and see if that helps tomorrow!

Thank you again, and hoping Feel Better Me feels better soon too!

Yeah no, I always eat a lot of veggies, have had salad with dinner every night forever have not had fruit because of the bloating factor it has...I just hope this means that I am doing right, it is just really uncomfortable! Enough whining!

So cmcd1070...hard boiled eggs would def cause bloat. Now don't judge me anyone else but this is how I got to drink water...I would set out the water I had to drink for the day and have it chug it down...1/3 in the morning, 1/3 midday and the rest in the evening. I drink it normally now but I really did not like water either (unless it was heated and poured over coffee beans!) our water here (Brisbane) tastes awful so at home I need a Brita filter and I use a big cup that way I can monitor it (I am talking a pilsner glass which holds almost a liter).

good luck...lets hope the bloating stops soon!

you could add another protein with your eggs if you don't think you can eat that many eggs! There are some great whole30 breakfast sausage seasoning recipes out there, you could make a big batch with ground pork ahead of time and add one of those with your eggs.

Thanks again!

The bloating and abdominal pain went away around 7pm. I ate dinner (bamboo shoots, chicken thigh, zucchini, broccoli) and had no further issues. Today I am about to eat breakfast (soooo many veggies - spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes...) scrambled with 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon) with a few avocado slices on top and mineral water over ice :( it's gross but i'm drinking it. There are no peppers or onions this time so I'm hoping no bloating today!

Wow that's a lot of food. I could not possibly eat it all. BUT no bloating or abdominal pain after breakfast. I waited 4 hours after eating to be sure.

For lunch I just had one dried apricot and BLOAT-PAIN

Mystery solved. No more fruit.

Thank you for your insight. I had no idea that fruit could cause so much digestive distress?

It could just be the dried fruit because it is super concentrated. Although, fresh apples make me super bloated...I think it just depends on the person. You could try experimenting with different fruits/amounts when you're feeling better to see if there is a difference for you!
