Compliant coconut milk?

Hi everyone!

I love coconut milk as an ingredient, and I have since before I started the Whole30. I looked at the cans in my cupboard and found that this brand of coconut milk contains sodium metabisulfite. I am assuming this makes them noncompliant since sulfites are out. Any suggestions for compliant coconut milk? I remember seeing another brand with sulfites, but I'm not sure if most have it or these two are uncommon.

Thanks!

I can't find anything in my regular grocery store that's compliant, but at the local health food stores all the canned coconut milk is compliant. I am using Thai Kitchen, which has coconut milk and guar gum (which is compliant). There are brands available elsewhere that are only coconut milk, and I understand that those are preferable to some Whole30ers who can taste the guar gum. I don't have any locally available options without guar gum, so that's all I know. But it does require a trip to the health food store.

Katey, are you in the U.S.? I use Native Forest coconut milk. It's in my local health food store and I bought a few cans from there to make sure I liked it. Now I buy it by the case from amazon.

I've heard others mention Thai Kitchen brand (canned) and something like Arro-D (I'm mangling the name), which I believe is in a shelf-stable cardboard-like box.

I am in the U.S. I have used Thai Kitchen brand in the past. I got the brand I currently have because it was cheaper; I guess it shows that sometimes it's worth the extra money. Thank you for the suggestions. I believe my normal grocery store carries Thai Kitchen--if I can't find it I will head to whole foods.

Oh good. Last time I was there they were out of the pure but cheap stuff. I am headed there tomorrow so if they have it, I will come back here and post the name.

Okay, so I'm slightly concerned. Every one of the 5 Supercenters and 4 neighborhood markets in my town has reorganized their coconut milk section with a crappy brand full of junk, Thai Kitchen and no room for my beloved Golden Star :(

Personally I don't care for Thai kitchen brand.... AROY-D. Is fully compliant and most if not all Asian markets carry it and will sell it buy the case ( $22.00 for 24 cans). Now that's a bargain and your supporting a local neighborhood store instead of a giant corp.

Now my fav is still Whole foods 365 brand at $2.09 per can. But can't beat the price of the Aroy

Uh oh. I was going to ask you if yours was still carrying your favorite. I will stop at mine after the gym today, but I have a feeling it will be the same story.

Here's the official word from the Golden Star fb page (https://www.facebook.com/GoldenStarFoods)

Happy Friday Golden Star Friends! We have been getting quite a few emails, messages and calls that your local WalMart is running out of our Golden Star Coconut Milk. We are working with them to get this resolved but, if you can, please also call 1-800-WALMART (925-6278) and let them know you are on the hunt for Golden Star Coconut Milk. A little nudge from our awesome customers may be just the thing to push things along :). Thank you!

I went to two Asian markets today at lunch, trying to find a good deal on coconut milk, since we're going through it so quickly! I found "Chef's Choice" for $1.48 a can :D It is an all blue can with Thai writing on it. I compared it to Aroy-D and found the Chef's Choice had more fat--the nutritional label is tricky since the Aroy-D serving size is 1/2 cup--170cal, 17g fat, 2g carb, 1g protein. The Chef's Choice has per 1/2 cup (serving size is 2oz on the label) 240cal, 22g fat, 6g carb, 2g protein. Sure I'm just doubling what the label says, so it might not be *exact*. But I figured the more fatty milk would be better to keep you full longer. :)

Here's a link I found of the can http://www.talinmark...lk-13-5-oz.html

NEVERMIND I totally missed the Meta-bisulphite :(:angry::(:angry:

I feel bad returning five cans of coconut milk to the old Japanese lady.

  • 4 weeks later...

The Golden Star brand is my favorite by far, and I had quite a panic the other day when neither Wal-Mart had it in stock, or even a spot for it! I came to the forum hoping someone knew what was going on...and am now on hold with the wal-mart customer service. So glad y'all had the scoop! You just can't mess with a w30'er and her coconut milk!;)

You can also order from Golden Star online, which works out to about $2.50 per can (12 cans per case).

Omg..you are my hero. Ever since WM stopped carrying them, I have been sad and buying Thai Kitchen from them. I do not like guar gum.

Going to order cases of Gold Star in case the zombies attack. :)

I also found a decent option at my local Dillons (Kroger). It's the Kroger brand and contains coconut and xanthan gum. It's not optimal, but it separates nicely like GS. Plus, guar gum and I don't get along.

Robin doesn't your WM carry Thai Kitchen for 2.43? It has guar gum which I have decided I don't like. I swear I can taste it. Plus I love how GS separates into butter like cream and water. I may have to boycott WM. I haven't decided.

I thought I liked TK but that was when I was buying their organic version from Whole Foods for way too much money. It separated and didn't have the icky guar gum taste. GS online is the way to go.

Go to sleep girl...way too late for you to be up jabbering. :)
