  3. LA confusion! Sadly, I've never been further west than Taos, NM so the only LA's I've ever been to are Lower Alabama and Louisiana! I'm going to Louisiana for graduation festivities and I get to wear my new red ballerine flats! I got a little creative with them and have a zebra-print suede inset on the heel. They're awesome! And so comfortable. I was so excited that they fit and I didn't have to return and reorder. I'm ready to order my Oura ring, too but they're making it overly complex and I'm having issues. Ugh! Why can't people do their jobs and do them right the first time?! It makes me crazy! It sounds like you are well-prepared for your long work days; good for you! Isn't it wonderful to have a good stockpile? Brats are actually seasoned pretty simply. Salt and pepper (most use white pepper but I don't like it so I use black- I don't care that there are little black flecks), nutmeg, marjoram (I think), garlic and I include the traditional cream but I don't think most people do. I've done it both ways and I think the cream takes it from "really good" to "great". I had some in my freezer when I did that W60 and I had to keep reminding myself that they were off limits. Those are the only sausages I make that are non-compliant but dairy doesn't give me any problems and cream is almost all butter fat anyway (plus it's not very much) so I'll eat them occasionally when I'm riding my own bike. You could definitely make them into sliders and just omit the cream. I use pork but see no reason why your ground chicken wouldn't work just as well. I've got my to-do list, of course, and am pretty much on schedule but I had a bit of a monkey wrench thrown into it today. I'm probably going to have to work until 6 or 630 this evening instead of flying out of here at my usual 3 PM. I'm "scheduled" to prep a bunch of chicken legs tonight and I don't know if I'll be up to such a tedious job after a long day. I had the bright idea to make chicken lollipops, knowing that I would probably regret it at some point but I'm a glutton for punishment. I'm thinking that it might be a good night to pick up some Greek food for dinner. We have rain and a cool front coming through so enjoy your first taste of summer!

    Whole30 Day 30! YES!

Shouting from the rooftops; Day 30 on Whole30! So proud of myself! I started the first day of Spring and today is Day 30! I'm adjusting to a new job at a new company and it's very stressful at the moment, so I am proud of myself for seeing this through! My first Whole30 was January 2015 and I recall the amazing success that was and wanted to get back to health. This go around I dug deep to escape food boredom and tried NEW recipes and ingredients I hadn't used before. That really added to my experience. It's also so empowering in general to try new things, to work for something/ research something. Tomorrow I will have a glass of wine after boxing class with coworkers. Woop woop! Monday is legumes, so if anyone has any recommendations for me - please share. All I can think about for Monday is peanut butter. I know the journey to food freedom is going to be a long, hard one but I am worth it. Reading Food Freedom Forever right now. Wish me luck!

Starting April 7th for "spring cleaning!"

Looks yummy! Is that a plate of sliced pears with mint? Very nice. Your dishes are very pretty, too. I thought of your sausage patties today when i made one of my favorites. I amended it from a recipe I saw somewhere, and it's so easy, and so simple: 2 lbs. ground chicken (you can use pork) 1 grated apple 2 tsp salt. 1-2 Tbsp cinnamon, to taste (I've added cardamom to this blend, too) Mix thoroughly, and shape into sliders, and bake in a 350-375 degree oven for about 20 minutes or until it reaches 165 degrees with an insta-read thermometer. (I've tried to pan sautee these, but the sugar in the apple makes it get kind of burned, so baking is best, I find) Today I used 3 lbs of ground chicken thighs (I special order this from the good meat market in town) and two apples. I now have lots of food on hand! I also went food shopping so I have plenty of greens, French green beans and broccoli, as well as a fresh batch of mayo. I'm in good shape! Hope everyone else is doing well!
  6. I'll bet the extra exercise is giving you a boost, sure thing! Plus, you are pretty much totally on-program, right? You're entitled to Tiger Blood! Happy "Friday!"...did your stuff arrive? Do the magic red ballerine flats fit? Your tale makes me appreciate our well, and that someone else already put it in, etc...but the filter thing is still not solved - and I am learning things the circuitous, or otherwise hard way, as is my custom = ) Too tedious to recount for you here, but the summary is that I think the local hardware store guy sold me a housing and filter that don't go together, and I think the plumber missed it. I'm still wrestling with it. If I'm right, I'm going to get an honorary plumbing certificate. Meanwhile, I'm equally disappointed in the 2nd plumber, but I still like him more, so won't mind hiring him again, and if I'm right about the above, I'll give him a raft of shit about it. Today was a day of moving at the speed of light... ...beginning with a giganto batch of chicken sausage patties. I think when you mentioned that you were congenitally not capable of making small batches of food, something clicked in my brain, and I said, "make more". I used 3 lbs, something I have never done, but just like a double batch is just as easy as a single, a triple batch is just as easy, too! So I am swimming in chicken sausage, and still have the hash in the freezer. I'm RICH I tell you! And the bratwurst was seriously delicious. I can't wait to get more...of course I have to know what's in it. What extra stuff if any do you put in yours? Your nephew's wedding is in L.A.? You'll have to face a slightly north-easterly direction and wave hello!! The rest of the week I'll be at the store 9-7 to cover for a staffer, but I am ready with great lunches! It's going to get up to 90 in the next couple of days, for the first time this season, so I think I'll be wearing summer-appropriate clothes. Trying to embrace it. Meanwhile I'm in that place where I couldn't have lost any weight yet, but I feel good, so that's not the worst frame of mind for the first summer outfit, right?

    Hiking breakfasts

Hi! i have an upcoming hiking trip planned and am trying to plan some breakfasts! My bf and I will be flying out west and renting a car, then essentially traveling from one primitive camp site to another. I will not have access to refrigeration or a fire/cooking source and am wondering if anyone has any good breakfast options? All I can think of are epic bars for protein right now, so would love suggestions! Thanks ! also, may have limited access to hot water

    Starting April 15

I started on the 14th too! So far, other than being a little sleepy from not having 6 cups of coffee a day, I haven't had a "hangover" or want to "kill all the things". I had a gastric sleeve in January 2018, so my meals are smaller and more frequent, but I am staying what I believe is compliant. Not feeling bad is making me wonder if I am doing something wrong, but I'm going to chalk it up to my body being used to elimination diets.

    NON Carbonated drinks

If you get real, 100% juice (nothing labeled as "lower sugar" or "lower calorie" or anything else like that), then you can put a splash of that in your water.

    NON Carbonated drinks

Thank you! I already drink a lot of plain water every day as is, no sodas or other high sugar drinks. I was just looking into something flavorful to change a few drinks up during the day. I had been adding 8oz of cranberry juice to 24 oz of water everyday (Oceanspray 5 calorie) but it is made with sucralose and I want to make sure I have something during whole30 that I could drink but still has flavor. :-)
  15. SugarcubeOD

    NON Carbonated drinks

Yes this would be fine but you should more regularly lean towards the plain water over the coconut water - coconut water is basically light fruit juice and not the best choice for frequent/daily drinking.

    NON Carbonated drinks

so unsweetened Aqua Fresca would be allowed? here would be the ingredients: 1 cup cucumber slices can peel if desire 1 cup water or coconut water 1 tbsp lime juice juice from 1/2 a lime 2 mint leaves

Hi Guys! I'm glad I found this thread. I'm new to Whole30. My husband and I are attempting this together as I've tried diets in the past and ended up caving because of his eating habits (which isn't his fault, but is mine!) My goals for this first round are to break some bad habits (though I'm a fairly healthy eater anyway) and to hopefully jumpstart a bit of weight loss (though I know that's not the main intention of this program) to help boost my self-esteem. I suffer from anxiety with bouts of depression and food tends to be my pick-me-up crutch. I'd love to change that. I have about 15-20 lbs to lose and I'm hoping this program will start me on the right path to that. I'm on day 3 today and I'm realizing how daunting it is to prepare food for both of us! Also, I'm HUNGRIER today than the past two days. I'm sure this will subside soon, but in the meantime i do find myself missing things like cheese. I'm also an avid baker, so putting my baking on hold is super challenging because it is my creative outlet! Any good meal suggestions? I made a chicken biriyani with cauliflower rice last night and it was really good!
  18. Thank you. I knew all this but it helps to hear the tough love to put me back in my place!

Caramel color is a type of sweetener so would be disallowed. Caramel flavour would be a natural or artificial flavour, both of which are permitted on Whole30.
  20. Hi @Dre25 I get where you’re coming from, it’s hard to see amazing results that get reported and not want to compare ourselves. The fact is though, Whole30 is not a weight loss program and it is extremely rare to be able to see noticeable body composition changes in 10 days. I’m definitely sensitive to the fact that when we are ready to see change, it feels like we’ve been waiting forever. But this is a long game. This is a 30 day experiment that often does have body-change results but it’s about more than that. It’s about finding and creating a sustainable way forward so that you can get to a place where you look and feel your best. That doesn’t happen in 10 days.

    NON Carbonated drinks

Infused water made by putting cut up fruit, vegetables, or spices in water (some ideas for flavor combos here: https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/infused-water-ideas/ ) Occasionally a splash of fruit juice in your water. There's all kinds of flavored teas out there, some herbal ones with no caffeine and some regular caffeinated teas, just read the ingredients to make sure they don't have stevia or soy or anything else that's not allowed.
  22. Hi there! I have never posted on a forum before so slightly nervous to put myself out there like this.... I'm doing my first Whole30 alone after hearing about such great results from others...It's getting lonely here, so just looking for some encouragement. I'm on day 10. I am following the plan, not weight myself, using the journal, read the text book and am halfway through Starts With Food (fascinating read!). I understand the science and am glad to be doing the program and understand it takes some time for the body to adjust. That said, many people have seen physical results by this time. As someone who works out every morning (45 - 90 min, including weights 2-3x per week), I thought I'd see that stubborn fat already burning away. Instead, maybe I see just tad bigger muscles (which really isn't my goal here...). Anyway, does anyone have any encouragement here? Did you see more tangible, measurable external results later in the game rather than in the beginning? I was eating fairly "healthy" before, so perhaps that's why I'm no see dramatic changes - that said, what I thought was 'healthy' is now shattered by Starts With Food so, who knows what I was really doing to my body!! I"m just glad to be armed with so much great education. But, also, bring on the five pound weight loss, too, pretty please universe? Thank you in advance!!
  23. Not sure why but I'm having a Tiger Blood day! Maybe it's the walking thing giving me a boost? I'm trying to do the same thing- build up the intensity and duration a little at a time and it's making me feel stronger. My new shoes and the Oura ring sizing kit should be waiting for me when I get home so I'm excited about that. And also looking forward to the extra day off this weekend- that makes tomorrow "Friday" for me! It does look like our husband's have similar senses of humor! Hopefully, now, you have a filter! I wish we had a well. When we had a major plumbing issue with the water line coming to the house, we looked at getting one but the whole drilling through rock thing is expensive. We were looking at about $30K and no guarantee they would hit water so it's city water for us but at least we have a whole house water filter. That was our Christmas, anniversary and birthday presents to ourselves a couple of years ago- we're such romantics! I love your story about Paris. I've only been to Greece that one time in my early 20's and my husband has never been anywhere except Mexico. We've talked about trying to plan a trip around a Formula 1 race one day. I'd love for it to be Monaco but we don't really have a Monaco kind of budget- but I can dream! Yay on the grill! When the weather is nice, we cook most of our dinners on it- less clean-up and tasty. We try to change up the spices on it for variety but the default is creole seasoning if we're not feeling ambitious. Rats! That reminds me that I forgot to take anything out of the freezer for dinner tonight. Looks like it'll be grilled fish cuz I can throw a couple of filets in a bowl of water and they'll defrost in no time. Kitty cook-up is done; it took me 2 1/2 hours but, hopefully, that will last about 3 weeks. I'll have to do another one before I head to LA, though. Time to go stretch my legs a bit.

AIP day one tomorrow 8 April 19

Hi, I started on April 8th too. I am just now joining the forum. I thought I could do this alone, but I can see I need to be a part of the whole to get the real benefits of staying strong, smart and focused during my Whole30 journey. I’ve been on it for 9 complete days and I finally am starting to feel healthier with more energy and less bloating. It was rough for a number of these 9 days, but I stuck to the plan. I’m glad to be part of the forum here. I love reading everyone’s stories. My impetus to get started on the Whole30 was chronic inflammation and pain and a recent “pre-diabetic” scare during my annual physical. My joints feel better already after 9 days so I feel encouraged. I’m not sure how all these eggs will be okay for my cholesterol, but I’m keeping the faith in the overall scheme of things for Whole30, it’ll be okay. Claire from Atlanta

So besides water, tea and coffee, what are some compliant drinks that are NOT carbonated? I had gastric sleeve and carbonated beverages literally hurt to drink.

@trafficjamdreaming Congrats on your Tiger Blood!! I am so hoping to get there. The last 2 days have been hellish for me. I've felt nauseous, headaches, and overall yuck! However, today is a new day! I feel so much better today! Even going to the gym!

So, caramel *color* and caramel *flavoring* are two different things. Let's let a mod weigh in on this one.
  28. So, after eating chickpea infected Baba Ganoush (still don't understand why chickpeas were even in the %^$#! stuff...) for a week thereby obliterating my second W30 efforts, I am about to embark on v2.1 starting tomorrow. I'm kind of glad I didn't decide to restart immediately - I'm in the Adirondacks at a work conference and there isn't a compliant morsel of protein on offer. I have some provisions in my room - guac and carrots, a bag of navel oranges and some mixed nuts that aren't even compliant because of peanut oil but it's just been easier to have a little gut busting cheese and butter soaked scrambled eggs while all this work stuff is going on. Tomorrow, however, is another day. I leave early and the trek home is 6 hours in the car with my friend and colleague so, I will have better control of my food. Can't wait to get home and back at it. Anyone else starting this week?
