    Don't over think this.

    Welcome all newcomers, welcome back vets, and for those of you who never left...welcome to this post. I just wanted to pop in here and remind you all to take a deep breath before you dive into all the questions about what you can and can't have. The program guidelines are clear on what you can and can't have (grains, dairy, W30 muffins), but things get a little grey when people start talking about what you should and shouldn't have. Please don't over think think this. You don't have to address every food related issue you have, break every bad habit, and shun every food that gives you comfort to succeed with your Whole30. If you need to you can always extend or repeat the process, and things will get better each time you do. My advice to you is this: Stick to the rules like they are your port in a storm (really, they will become that). Take the Moderators responses seriously (we know what we're talking about). Take community members suggestions as advice from those who came before, but keep in mind they are not the rules and not the Mods. Everyone here is well-meaning, and everyone here wants to see you succeed, but everyone here is at a different place in this journey. And finally, take comfort in these words (from Melissa Hartwig, on another forum post): Here's the thing (and this is an interesting discussion)... there are Whole30 "rules," which are strict, clearly outlined, and very well defined. No grains - and here are all the things we consider grains. No dairy - and here are all the dairy items excluded. No Paleo-fied food choices, and here's what those look like. Then, there are Whole30 suggestions for success. They're not part of the official rules, but they're things that we've seen really help (or harm) people as they move through the program. Fruit smoothies for breakfast - not a good idea. Skipping breakfast - not a good idea. Eating every two hours, all day - not a good idea. These things won't necessarily affect your Whole30 results (although they might), but if we can give you additional suggestions that will make your transition and your program easier and more effective, we're going to give them to you. Keep Calm and Whole30 On.

    Don't over think this.

    thanks so much for this post! I am on my first whole30 ever (or whole100 if I have my way) and have started to stress out a little bit today. I was actually upset with myself for having 3 pieces of fruit and cashew butter on two different occasions. did I stick to the rules? yes. could my food choices have been better? yes. did I drink diet coke and have cookies for breakfast like I did a week ago? nope. so that is success. I don't want to get discouraged and worry about how I can cook my veggies/meat/whatever.

    We as moderators see a lot of confusion around here on what constitutes a serving of eggs when eggs are your primary protein source. We tell you as many as you can hold in your hand without dropping but I still don't think people actually try this. So I thought I'd post a visual for you folks. It would be fun if other people added their own pictures too. Try the experiment. Context - I'm 5'4" female and these are large eggs.

    Don't over think this.

    Thank you for this! I worked a rogue night shift this week (between day 2 and day 3 of my W30) and was having some guilt twinges regarding my every 2 hour egg/meat/coconut milk/veggie 'muffin' - but it allowed me to get through the night without having graham crackers and peanut butter (an ICU staff nutritional staple!). It's not what I do on a normal day, but I survived my shift with my W30 intact so it was a victory. I think we are very hard on ourselves sometimes. I was actually feeling GUILTY about the 'egg muffings' because I felt I was 'snacking'. Then I remembered that we hear a lot about context here. And in that moment (or those 12 hours) I was doing what I had to do to maintain my W30. And I felt better. Yay me!!

    Although there isn't an official 7 day meal shopping list, I created my own for you to use with the new Whole30 book if you want. This is for one person. I was unable to find recipes for slow cooker beef brisket and plantains in the new Whole30 book. So I used the Braised Beef Brisket recipe instead. You will have to find a pan fried plantain recipe and add those ingredients to the list. I hope this helps.     While working on The Whole30 book edits for our UK publisher, I began researching E numbers that would rule a product out on the Whole30. (Boy, your labeling isn't anywhere near as easy to translate with all these codes!) I thought you might find these helpful. Note, I can't say for certain these are 100% of the E numbers to avoid. These are just the ones I researched with respect to specific off-plan ingredients. Feel free to post your own resources, or to request that I add to this list with other additives you discover in your own research.     This is a list of the most commonly used acronyms on the forum. If you see one we're missing, you can note it below and a moderator will update the list. W9: Whole9 W30: Whole30 SAD: Standard American Diet This is the diet that typifies the western attitude toward food - processed foods, low fat, "sugar free", food-like products, fast food... W30D: Whole30 Daily The Whole30 Daily is a 32 day (you get days 0 and 31) subscription email service packed with tips and resources for you during every step of your Whole30 journey. SWYPO: Sex With Your Pants On. Pancakes, cookies, muffins and other paleofied junk foods that are never as satisfying as the real thing and often lead down the slippery slope to "real" junk food. ISWF: It Starts With Food Best-selling book by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig (creators of the Whole30 program) that details both the ins and outs of the Whole30 program AND the science behind their many recommendations. WOD: Workout of the Day Primarily CrossFit terminology used to refer to the assigned group workout of the day. Many folks around here use it to describe their daily workout, CrossFit or not. Pre-wo: Pre-Workout/ Post-wo: Post-Workout Generally used in reference to what foods are best to eat before and after a workout AIP: Autoimmune Protocol This is a reference to the autoimmune protocol – a larger and more specific set of dietary restrictions for those suffering from autoimmune conditions. FODMAP We won't worry about the sciency words the acronym stands for. These foods are easily broken down by certain bacteria in the gut and can cause digestive troubles for some folks. MDA: Mark's Daily Apple. ~ A good go-to if you can't find the info you need here or on our site, whole9life.com. BP Coffee: Bulletproof Coffee ~ A coffee drink made with ghee and coconut oil, blended in a blender or with an immersion blender. NSV: Non-Scale Victory - like clearer skin, better sleep, less joint pain, clothes fitting better -- anything other than the number on the scale JERF: Just Eat Real Food FWOB: Foods without brakes ~ less healthy foods you can't seem to stop once you start ACV: apple cider vinegar EVOO: extra virgin olive oil OTF: Orange Theory Fitness - a popular gym/fitness program

    So I made this great breakfast of leftover cooked veges with three beaten eggs and showed off my beautiful creation still in the pan to my partner and instead of telling me how great it looked I got.... thats a lot to eat for breakfast!!! Was so tempted to say yeah right, 350 calories of healthy unprocessed food is bad for breakfast but your two weetbix with milk and muesli on top is the better meal? Hmmmph!

    Well you are allowed to have 2 servings of protein if you need it. This would be a question for the top dogs in all seriousness. I'd be scared I'd drop one of my very expensive pastured eggs trying to build a pyramid. And my floors are not really clean right now...and I would scoop it up and eat it anyway.

    Plan a Whole30 dream vacation

    I would go to Costa Rica (we've been trying to plan a trip there for ages). We'd rent a house on the beach, close enough to town that we could hit the market for fresh produce and fish. Our house would have an awesome kitchen, where we'd cook all of our own food... but we'd also have daily cleaning service, so we never had to clean up after ourselves. Fresh fish and seafood, mango salsa (we'd go during mango season, of course), fruit smoothies (because when you're on vacation, it's okay to go a little crazy), and tons and tons of fresh salads, because when I'm south of the border, I'm always craving greens. There would also be this little place in town that served pulled pork, chicken, and beef, and they could make us lettuce tacos with fresh salsa and mole sauce any time we asked. Yum. I'd focus a ton of fun and play, and surf, paddleboard, and do yoga. There would also be awesome mountain biking trails nearby in the hills (hey, it's MY vacation), and we'd take our bikes up there a few times, too. And we'd find an awesome, giant boat to take us fishing and snorkeling, and we'd eat fish we caught right off the boat, sushi-style. I forgot about that part. Heaven. Someday.

    Can I just comment here that not everyone follows the timeline so if you're NOT experiencing the listed 'symptoms' you're not necessarily doing it wrong - also sometimes the expectation actually brings it on, which isn't always the best thing Comparison is the thief of joy - enjoy your OWN journey!!

    I thought to post this shot of my breakfast prep this morning. On the weekend I diced 5 bell peppers, 3# green beans, a bunch of steamed potatoes and some ham (note, the ham is not compliant but I am not on Whole30). Now in the morning I just throw a handful of each into a frying pan with some fat, go blowdry my hair and pour a coffee and breakfast cooks itself. Wash out one frying pan when the food has been plated and you're done! Note: the ham is non compliant but you could do the same with cooked chicken, cooked ground pork/beef, chopped roast, chopped pork chops etc. Repeat, the ham is not compliant.

    2 pounds ground chicken (I use ground chicken thighs as it's moister...if you use ground breast, add some of the bacon fat for richness) 1 pound bacon, diced and cooked until very crispy, then drained 1 bunch cilantro chopped a handful of chives from the garden...or a couple scallions Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder Form into patties...and then in that magical depression that you make in the middle of a burger to stop it turning into a baseball when you cook it? You jam a bunch of pickled jalapeños. I would have preferred to mix the jalapeños into the burger meat but husband doesn't like spicy so I had to do it so that he could pick them out/off. I grilled the ones I have on hand right now but have also done them in the oven...on a rack placed on a cookie sheet and baked at 500F for 10-12 minutes.

    Oh, fun! As it is currently Eight Billion Degrees here today, I thought I'd start off this morning with a salad. And yes, I ate it out of a huge tupperware because as we always say, your salad needs to be huge and all my large bowls were busy. Contained potatoes, olives, pickles, peppers, tomatoes, greens, cucumbers, a hunk of meatloaf and this dressing.

    One of the most common questions here on the forum is, what can I eat for breakfast? Maybe it's someone used to eating pancakes or pop tarts or just coffee or nothing at all, or maybe it's someone who's been eating eggs and is tired of them or wants to try the AIP protocol that doesn't allow eggs, but most people at some point during a Whole30 wonder about this. I thought maybe we could have a thread about unusual but tasty breakfast options that we could direct people to when they ask. So, if you eat the kind of breakfast that makes your non-W30 friends think you're weird, things that aren't your standard eggs and bacon or sausage combos, tell us about them here. If you want to show pictures, go for it. (Posts showing or describing obviously non-Whole30 foods like paleo pancakes, fauxtmeal, or coconut yogurt-fruit-nut creations will be deleted without warning. Please stick to meals that meet the meal template.) I'll get us started here -- this morning, I had leftover braised round steak, belly dance beet salad, and crisp sweet collards with pecans and raisins. So what did you have for your Meal1 this morning?

    Confused about date syrup?

    Let me elaborate.. a syrup made from dates is not acceptable during a Whole30 and a crappy idea at any time because sweetening your food with such a product erodes health. It does not make anything better. Making a puree with dates in order to sweeten your food is maybe 10 percent more acceptable than using a date syrup. You know where 10 percent better leaves you? Ninety percent away from where you belong if you want to be healthy. The person behind the dessert recipes thinks eating a frozen date helped her during her Whole30. This is not true. Feeding a sugar craving keeps the craving healthy and strong. The Whole30 approach to sugar cravings is to starve them unmercifully until they die. There is no room to negotiate with a sugar craving. They are cunning and powerful. Trying to placate a craving with just a little something has ended many Whole30s prematurely. Don't listen to the soft crowd. Listen to the old timers. Go cold turkey regarding sweetness. Let me explain where it really is okay to use something to sweeten your food... when you are making pickles. Here is a good recipe for making quick, refrigerator pickles... Submerge your sliced cucumbers in a mixture of half apple cider vinegar and half apple juice plus spices like salt, garlic, peppercorns, etc and let soak for 12-24 hours. Making pickles is an acceptable time to use a sweetener during a Whole30. Seriously.

    You most certainly can. Also remember that you can't always trust your hunger signals while things adjust. But if you just can't eat anymore saving it and eating it as a mini meal is a great option. Your body will adjust.
