    Don't over think this.

    Welcome all newcomers, welcome back vets, and for those of you who never left...welcome to this post. I just wanted to pop in here and remind you all to take a deep breath before you dive into all the questions about what you can and can't have. The program guidelines are clear on what you can and can't have (grains, dairy, W30 muffins), but things get a little grey when people start talking about what you should and shouldn't have. Please don't over think think this. You don't have to address every food related issue you have, break every bad habit, and shun every food that gives you comfort to succeed with your Whole30. If you need to you can always extend or repeat the process, and things will get better each time you do. My advice to you is this: Stick to the rules like they are your port in a storm (really, they will become that). Take the Moderators responses seriously (we know what we're talking about). Take community members suggestions as advice from those who came before, but keep in mind they are not the rules and not the Mods. Everyone here is well-meaning, and everyone here wants to see you succeed, but everyone here is at a different place in this journey. And finally, take comfort in these words (from Melissa Hartwig, on another forum post): Here's the thing (and this is an interesting discussion)... there are Whole30 "rules," which are strict, clearly outlined, and very well defined. No grains - and here are all the things we consider grains. No dairy - and here are all the dairy items excluded. No Paleo-fied food choices, and here's what those look like. Then, there are Whole30 suggestions for success. They're not part of the official rules, but they're things that we've seen really help (or harm) people as they move through the program. Fruit smoothies for breakfast - not a good idea. Skipping breakfast - not a good idea. Eating every two hours, all day - not a good idea. These things won't necessarily affect your Whole30 results (although they might), but if we can give you additional suggestions that will make your transition and your program easier and more effective, we're going to give them to you. Keep Calm and Whole30 On.

    Starting whole30 6/1/18

    I have decided to start the whole 30 as well on June 1st! My name is Kathy and I am 51, both my sister and her daughter have done it and I am in such bad shape I have decided to commit! It’s going to be tough but in 2015 my husband died and turned my world upside down. I have 2 adult kids, I now live in my own and it’s time to work on myself!

    When I wrote the original post of my experience as of Day 29, I was upbeat and happy, and glad to share my "success story". Then I read the reply by Tom Denham, a Moderator for the Whole30 program. If I had written a response yesterday, it would have been a short two word reply, but I decided to think about it and sleep on it. I did both and here is my reply to Tom and to others. Tom, you are implying that I did not complete the Whole 30 program and that I failed because I chose to weigh myself during the 30 days. You couldn't be more wrong....and you can't take that achievement away from me. I was 100% faithful to the food rules...let me repeat, 100% faithful. And for doing that, I was rewarded with many positive changes, physically and mentally. Tom, if you had read my post with an open-heart, you would realize how wrong your statement was when you said that I let the scale guide my behavior...if that was true, I would have stopped the program on Day 7 or 8 when I stopped losing any more weight. But I didn't stop because of all the other positive things that where happening, as I outlined in my original post. You may think I was not fully engaged in the program and you are free to have that opinion...but I felt fully engaged and reaped positive rewards for my efforts. The only negative experience I had during the past 30 days was reading Tom's reply which felt shaming and pious.

    Down 50 pounds!!

    I know that Whole 30 isn't about losing weight, but I hit the 50 pounds of weight loss this morning!!!! About 20 of that has been with 2 rounds of Whole 30. I feel like I have my life back after struggling my whole life with weight. I was having a lot of trouble with my eating habits after my second baby about a year ago. But now I am pre-wedding weight (6years ago) and still going strong! I'm just really excited and so thankful for Whole 30. I have been able to learn healthy food choices and re-train my brain on the foods that I should eat. And that its ok to spend a little more money on food that is better for me because it will be better for my family in the long run. I have about 15 more pounds until I meet my goal but I know that is possible with my new lifestyle.

    Struggling to Make Mayo

    Alright ladies- here’s what I learned: 1. I’ve been using my immersion blender incorrectly. Now I’m double excited to use this tool! 2. Light tasting olive oil is an actual thing AND it’s amazing. 3. This forum is awesome. I’m so glad I wrote in. Everyone has been super supportive and helpful which is great because... 4. I CAN MAKE HOMEMADE MAYO AND IT’S DELICIOUS. I’m so excited. Thank you all so much for your help!!!

    It Is So Much More Than The Scale

    The scale! It’s been calling me for months. Oh why did I succumb? This time the number on the calendar had a hold on me. It instantly convinced me it was time to weigh in. After all, I had not been on the scale since December 28! My clothes were feeling loose, and I even had to get a new bra so surely there had to be a big number loss, right? Imagine my surprise when it only reflected 11 pounds? 17 weeks and only 11 pounds? Wait, what??? What happened? Where is the 20 – 25 pounds lost that I imagined? As I took a day to reflect, I really took the time to think about the past 17 weeks. Prior to W30, I would have immediately felt defeated and headed straight to the kitchen for a MAJOR binge and which would have put me in a serious food coma! I have been fighting disordered eating issues for 30+ years! But this time was different! I didn’t even have that feeling which was a HUGE NSV for me! So what happened? I reminded myself that that was just a number that gives me information about my health, it does not define me. Then I decided to look at my journal and gather data from the past 17 weeks. Here is what I found: 8 weeks of 100% compliant eating! Then four weeks of throwing in the towel and letting my Sugar Dragon be in charge and believe me, she was having a major hold on me that I had a hard time getting out from under. Followed by two weeks of half ass compliancy and reintroduction followed by three weeks of 100% compliancy. Ok, now I understand the food piece but what about the exercise piece? Looking at my exercise calendar, how many smiley faces did I give myself? (I don’t track points or calories anymore, but wanted to track my exercises, smiley faces mean I completed the days planned activity. I had 7 weeks of J. That means there was 10 weeks (not in a row) of almost NOTHING! NOTHING! Ok, that explains a lot; because for my body type I HAVE to move it to lose it! Then thing I reflected on was the meal template. Had I really been following it like it was recommended? Were my nuts and seed servings a closed handful or more like an opened palm? Were my cooking fats 1 – 2 thumb sized or more like 3-4? How about the serving sizes? Was I really following the suggestions? If the meal fed four, did I turn it into two? Therefore eating more than I should? Maybe a few too many potatoes on non-activity days? You know, too much of a good thing, is still too much! So when I look at all of this, I realize that my 11 pounds are exactly what they should be. 11 weeks of 100% compliancy + 7 weeks of good exercise = 11 pounds lost! That is a great success and I am very proud of that! But the most important piece to this puzzle is how I feel. I FEEL FANTASTIC!! Better than I have in years. With the exception of the time I wasn’t eating compliantly and not exercising, I feel great. My stomach doesn’t hurt and I am not bloated. My joints don’t bother me. My face is not puffy and my complexion looks better. My head doesn’t hurt and I don’t feel like I am in a fog. And better than all that, my anxiety and depression barely exist. I have Tiger Blood and I feel soo full of energy. I am annoyingly happy and always in a good mood more times than not. I am also back to running which is one of my favorite things to do! Whole 30 has allowed me to live again and be present in my life. It has taught me through reintroduction that just because a food is healthy and good for you, it doesn’t mean it is necessarily good for me. My body reacted poorly to certain foods and I have learned to avoid them. I have also learned that I don’t have to be tied down to an app to track my food, to the measuring spoons and the food scale. I now listen to my body and know which foods react poorly. This is FOOD FREEDOM! Thank you so much Melissa Hartwig sharing Whole 30. It really has changed my life!

    4/2/2018 Starting Whole30

    Happy Day!!! Day 30!!! Congratulations to everyone who completed the program!!! It's been fun riding out the last 30 days with you. I'm curious to see how the measurements will work out this evening. Hats off to those of you continuing for another 30. I don't think i'd have to many issues continuing along the same journey. My wife on the other hand is looking forward to a little creamer in her coffee. Other than that, I think she would be fine as well. It's been fun, interesting, nerve racking, a little stressful, and a great learning experience of all the hidden ingredients in what is called "food". I hoping to take what I've learned to the next level and continue to eat healthy. This was a great first step! I'm glad i did it!!

    Starting Oct 1

    Hello! I'm in the process of reading the books so I can have an Oct. 1st start date. So far I am mostly excited because it seems like there are plenty of things to eat and since I'm not counting calories, etc. I really am just focusing on what I put in my body and fighting cravings. I have some suspicions already about certain foods and how they affect me, so I don't think this will be super eye-opening, but I am anxiously anticipating feeling better and hope to continue the better eating well beyond the 30 days. I'm not here to lose significant amounts of weight, although I won't lie, if I lost 15 pounds I would be pretty happy. I think I'm picking the perfect time to start because I have two weeks off work in Oct. for vacation and since it's a staycation, I will have better control of my days and what I am eating. It's great to meet other people going through the same things and sharing ideas and support! Right now I'm thinking about going through my cupboard and fridge, marking what is safe to consume, and then making a list of the items I need to find Whole30 subs for, if possible.

    I'm a newbie to Whole30 but have been preparing for a couple of months. I am starting on Sept 3 and my husband is joining me! A little nervous, but also excited to see what this new lifestyle change will bring! I'm putting this out there for accountability! I'm 55, and I know a lot of people in my age bracket will say gaining weight, body pains/aches, lack of energy is all a part of getting older.... but I defy that! I want to be healthy and feel great! Thanks!

    THANK YOU for this! I have been panicking over what happens after Day 30... It’s technically Day 32 for me, but I keep saying, just one more day. It DOES feel safer to stay here... But that’s not the point!! I just kept waiting for someone to tell me what to do... But I need to figure it out for myself and find my WholeKira. I mean I “knew” this, but reading this - it finally clicked. Sitting down to make my own reintroduction schedule now.

    4/2/2018 Starting Whole30

    Congrats everybody, well done! It was nice traveling along with you on the April Whole30. It went by really fast surprisingly. Like @bigmamabird I'm going to continue at least another month since my sugar dragon is still breathing fire, and I just want to make this healthy way of eating a good solid habit, and see if I can continue to relieve some health issues. So, I'll be around here if anyone wants to chat more about this journey or just wants to check in sometime. Good luck, best wishes, and bon voyage to all of you fellow Whole30ers!

    I totally miscounted and thought yesterday was the last day. I keep thinking a day ahead.... Well one more day won't hurt me. I even have some paleo bacon I can cook this morning. Aaah but I was looking forward to that glass of wine... I forgot to weigh and measure myself before starting but I am excited to hear about everybody's successes!

    Achieving is believing

    I have never been one to flirt with 'fads.' I'm also the farthest thing from a habit-forming person you will meet, for good and bad. That's why when a good friend introduced me to Whole 30 six weeks ago, I was hesitant. Not another wacky diet plan that promised results that never materialized, or if they did promised to make me miserable in the process. Still, I knew changes were necessary. I have fought weight issues and joint pain much of my adult life. Last year was going to be the year I got serious, so I committed to losing 50 pounds over the course of a 12-month period. I lost two. Worse yet, I just felt awful. Back, hip, shoulder, feet. Some days it felt like every major joint in my body belonged to someone 25 years older than a man in his early 50s. As a result, my energy level wasn't where it needed to be for someone with a relatively demanding job, and I couldn't remember the last time I had back-to-back good nights of sleep. So, when my friend said she had lost 13 pounds on Whole 30 and that her joint pain had all but disappeared, I was skeptical but decided to take a look. After all, what could it hurt? The concept was familiar, if a bit extreme-sounding to a guy who had consumed a half-dozen Diet Cokes a day for decades, and who enjoyed milk and cheese more than most anything else in life. Still, one concept resonated with my desire to think we all have some degree of control over our lives: 30 days of focusing on healthy, whole foods shouldn't be hard. It was a matter of how badly I wanted to force some discipline on myself. Or put another way, how badly did I want to try something that could help me feel better and gain greater control over my health? Thirty-four days later (I've extended my schedule by a week as I plan for reintroduction) I can say this is one of the smartest decisions I've ever made - and one of the most unexpectedly pleasant surprises I have ever encountered. The highlights: I am nearly 20 pounds lighter than when I started. My blood pressure has dropped 20 points. According to my Fitbit sleep analyzer, my resting heartbeat has fallen from 77 to 65. I'm routinely sleeping better than I have in years and my aching joints have stopped barking at me (I've not taken an anti-inflammatory in a month). Beyond that, my energy is up and I am more efficient and focused at work. I've begun working out regularly and can see a day when I lose the "big number" of pounds I have been dreaming about and create the healthy lifestyle that has largely eluded me for many years. I have developed new eating habits and a healthy appreciation for what it means to fill my tank with quality fuel. It wasn't always easy, especially the first two weeks. And, I'll admit to being bored to tears with water at times. It also wasn't as hard as I thought. Once I started seeing results and fell into a routine, I stopped obsessing about what I wasn't eating and enjoyed the many delicious foods I was eating. It also became clear that I wanted the good results to continue more than I wanted that Diet Coke or cheese and crackers. As I stare reintroduction in the face, I'll admit to a bit of trepidation. I don't want to fall off the wagon and go back to feeling the way I did pre-Whole 30. I also realize that I have a lot more work to do to get to my ultimate "fighting weight" and to reach my health goals. Still, I'm choosing to trust the process and to view reintroduction as the next necessary step in providing me the knowledge base I need to truly control my food choices. I know that eliminating dairy, grains, legumes, alcohol and sugar lad to dramatic gains in health and energy; now I need to know which doors lead me down a dark alley and which will help lead me toward the light (I'm really hoping dairy is one of the good guys). The learning process has been an unexpected benefit of my Whole 30 journey, and I'm excited about the next stage. And the one after that. For now, though, I felt the need to share my story as way of saying thanks. To my friend who cared enough to gently persuade me to give this a try. To my wife who has been uber supportive throughout this (although she didn't join me on Whole 30 her eating habits have changed noticeably as well). And to the entire Whole 30 community for providing the tools and support to make this possible. With appreciation and excitement about what comes next, - ML

    Whole 30 December Start

    I have had other aborted attempts at a Whole 30 start. So why not when I will be facing the Holidays as an extra challenge (at least if I stick to plan I can not gain weight over the month of December. I am really really finally ready to give an honest go at this Whole 30 beginning December 1st. Today was a test day with one or two items such as hot chocolate and milk in my coffee and herbal teas but I am ready to do whatever it takes to improve my health. I have various chronic issues with health -- Cancer Survivor (grateful to be 15 years post - Blood Cancer), hypothyroid, PCOS, and pre-dabetes also Anxiety / Depression. I am active somewhat regularly but just have not been able to get the food right. So the workouts running , mountain bicycling, walking/ hiking occasional swimming and spinning class and yoga class but mostly home yoga over past year also trying Fitocracy (calisthenics) and Barre workout ( a few classes) now home workout (very challenging) and core workouts including a really good workout with Yoga International online with a core yoga sequence about 45 minutes. I also tend towards chronic fatigue even though i push through 40 hour work week and commute and tend to stay on top of the exercise schedule sometimes falling off plan during the weekdays. So any help would be appreciated. so far I have about four or five how to do the Whole 30 books and a few Paleo cookbooks and just bought Practical Paleo book also. no questions yet. Hopefully tomorrow off to an ambitious start even with the Holidays to navigate through this month. I am so grateful for all the helpful online tools to get started and this community with experience and practical tips and guidelines. - Jen

    Starting Oct 1

    week 2! I made the holiday menu from the whole30 book for my whole family for our canadian Thanksgiving dinner this weekend. Everyone raved about it and they think this new crazy diet i'm on is awesome lol. i'm doing this whole30 to really change my habits and lastnight i had a little relapse. I stayed compliant! but i did sit in front of the TV eating a bunch of pistachios and dried apple chips. that habit used to include cheesies and gummy worms so at least i'm being healthier! so far i am loving how full i feel all the time and i seem to have regular energy throughout the work day instead of highs and lows

    After dinner used to get me too. This is silly, but worked for me, and that was to make some tea. I don't even really like herbal tea, but the process of messing with it was enough to make me feel like something had happened. And I'm talking old school (not keurig) - teapot, boil the water, get out the teabag and cup (pretty cup :)), then steep the tea, etc. I even recommend getting some sort of assortment of tea because it takes a little bit of brainpower to choose which one you "want". More than once the tea sat on the counter and got cold because I'd forgotten about it entirely after getting re-involved with tv or whatever. Just going into the kitchen and doing something that took 10 minutes or so was enough for my brain to feel like "okay, we went into the kitchen and got something" and/or to get past the reflexive feeling that that was supposed to happen. If you actually drink it then that takes even longer. Sometimes I still wanted something but it was easier to say no to after that. It took that a long time to go away for me (and may never fully go away). Hope this helps!

    My 15 year old daughter and I are starting today. This will be my 3rd round and her first. We're excited and I spent most of yesterday food prepping while she read through the PDFs and lists, etc. She actually approached me about doing this, so I'm along for moral support. I had a *very* off program summer so need to get back into better habits. We're both looking forward to it. Let me know if you're starting today too and we can check on one another and keep honest

    Good evening, I'm starting the Whole 30 on August 13th. Book to arrive tomorrow so I hope to do some reading this weekend so I'm ready to roll come Monday. I'm excited to do it, motivated but still a bit nervous. I hope after reading the book and turning for support on the forum will alleviate any nervousness. Looking forward to chatting and supporting others these next 30 days. Rebecca

    Starting whole30 6/1/18

    Lightening fast update bc I have a workout to get in but one tip I always found interesting for people who were used to a hot cereal breakfast is to try subbing in a cup of creamy type soup. Obviously “creamy” can be sort of hard to achieve with no dairy but getting creative with a sweet potato based soup or something with some coconut cream might help fill the void in a way that eggs don’t and soups have that great portability factor. And they are a perfect vehicle for veggies. Actually I started to type veghicle....which cracked me up more than it should have.

    Wow!! Worked for me.

    52 year old whte male/5' 10". Starting at 209lbs, I am down 25lbs so far to date, with my target goal weight of <179 by 6/16/18. My first round started 1/2/18. By the end of the first round on 2/2/18 in time for the Superbowl, I had lost 15lbs. From 2/2 to 4/16, I continued to eat 90% healthy, but deviated with some alcohol, dairy, and grains. I had gained just a couple pounds, and was feeling a bit sluggish so I decided to go full force, and started again on 4/16/18 and just completed my second round of Whole 30 today (5/18/18), down another 12lbs. At this point, I have become used to not eating certain foods, and getting creative with finding alternative salad dressings, oils, sweet stuff (dates are the best) and meal planning. I actually eat more now (all healthy) throughout the day and stay full longer. Plus trying different foods and preparing in different ways has helped. Not to mention wifey is a little happier I am making dinner a couple nights during the week and also going to the market. For me, the weight really started falling off after the 1st week(s) I started the plan(s). My wife started in April also, but lost only a pound and was discouraged. However, she started cross fit training, so what I think was happening, and I could tell visually, his her weight shifted from muffin top to a much toner upper body; muscle occupies 4x less space than fat. And she did not really need to lose poundage like I did. As for me, I would exercise a little here, a little there, where ever and when ever I could, never putting emphasis on duration or reps; 10 push ups here, a few crunches, a short walk, a couple of floors up/down stairs, and I kept a barbell at my desk. Little by little I would increase it, but no pressure on myself, and just kept mental note as to my increases. I saw the shift in weight, lost a lot of the puffiness in my face and neck, and I just feel better overall. Now, since I have some time behind me with the exercising, I am starting to keep track and set little goals. For example, I try to complete 80 pushups, 40 air squats, 20 crunches, and 30 arm curls in a day. So I do it whenever I have the time. Also what I have noticed is I go to sleep quicker, and pop up out of bed even after only 6.5hrs of sleep; I just can't lay there, I have to get up. I am not sluggish anymore, my mind is firing better, and everything is "regular." My 10 and 12yr old boys are amazed. I haven't ran for 10 years, so this week I did a 1 mile walk/run (more walking). In time, I will increase the distance and maybe keep time. My high school weight was 165, and although that is not my target weight, it seems with this plan that my body is trying to fix and rectify the food and drink abuse I have put it through over the last 35 years. I will continue to eat this way, with the occasional indulgence here and there for special occasions. I just feel better overall; less stressed, more calm, less pain in my joints, and more willing try different things that I would not have before. In 9 months, I will be 53. I can be 53 on my way to getting healthier, or I can be 53 and live my life as I did before. Either way, I am going to be 53. Lastly, Iwent for the trifecta of going on Whole30, no drinkking, and even quit smoking after 37 years (started at 15). But the way I am eating, despite the amount, I am still losing weight. Whole30 takes some work in planning your meals, snacks, especially if you have kids you also cook for. Make sure you always have snack food around in case that will satisfy your hunger as that is when you are at your weakest. Bonus, you are going to save a lot of money on eating out.

    Diabetes Reversed in 90 Days!

    I have never written a testimonial. I am so happy to be writing one now! I started Whole30 on January 2, 2018. I had been taken off diabetes medication because I could not manage the medication. My A1C reading was 7.7 and I was on a wait list to see a specialist in internal medicine to see what medication I could take to manage the diabetes. My liver enzymes were in the high 90's. I was entirely Whole30 compliant for 30 days. I had my A1C test at about day 21 and it was 7.1. After years of seeing movement upward only I was ecstatic. The diabetes educator was skeptical and said well of course your blood sugar is good because you have cut all carbs. I showed her my food diary. Oh you are eating carbs ( I need potatoes almost daily)...oh this is a plan you could stay on for life...I had lost 12 pounds too! That was Day 21! I asked my Dr. to not move forward with any medication until after my next A1C test and after seeing the specialist. I still stuck to the Whole30 plan but was not so diligent about food labels. I did not do any reintroduction but did have a couple of items that contained dairy and sugar a couple of times. On April 13th I had the A1C test and got results today. I am at 6.1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't really say Day 102 Whole30, but after 102 days on the plan, I have reversed diabetes, the internal medicine doc says no need for ANY medication whatsoever! My liver enzymes are normal! And I have lost 30 pounds! While I am still considered pre-diabetic that will change too! Thank you Whole30!!!

    Don't over think this.

    thanks so much for this post! I am on my first whole30 ever (or whole100 if I have my way) and have started to stress out a little bit today. I was actually upset with myself for having 3 pieces of fruit and cashew butter on two different occasions. did I stick to the rules? yes. could my food choices have been better? yes. did I drink diet coke and have cookies for breakfast like I did a week ago? nope. so that is success. I don't want to get discouraged and worry about how I can cook my veggies/meat/whatever.
