    30 Day Time Machine

DAY 7 - One week done! Breakfast: Simply Potatoes Hash browns, 2 eggs, fried up in coconut oil Lunch: Zoe's Kitchen - Shrimp Kabob, Fried Potato Salad, Roasted Veggies all off their Whole 30 approved menu! Dinner: Chicken Satay Salad...not very good. Snacks: A few grapes, a few nuts, some leftover Mexican Twice Baked Potato filling after workout. Exercise: 70 minute bike ride through the fog. See NSV Sleep: STRESS! I knew it was going to be a bad night, so I took an Ativan. I finally feel asleep about 10:30-11 and woke up at 4. Thank you Ativan for filling in the middle gap. See NSV NSV: - My bike ride was not miserable! My rides for some time now have just felt like someone turned up the gravity. I'm not sore, I'm not out of breath. They are just HARD. Yesterdays right felt normal. My fitness is in the toilet but it wasn't the slog that it's been. I can build back up fitness as long as someone keeps the gravity turned down. My bike shoes seem to fit better like my feet aren't as swollen, or they are just getting used to them not that I'm getting to ride outside a little more regularly. My bra felt like it fit. I live in sports bras/workout clothes and with the weight gain my regular bras just haven't felt right and I've been to the point that I refuse to spend any money on bigger clothes. Guess that means at some point I'll just be naked but since I rode outside yesterday early, I took a shower and after the shower I put real clothes on, including a real bra and it didn't just bug all day like it has it has been. Weight loss? Of course from my boobs first but what they hell, I'll take it. I DID NOT DRINK OR STRESS EAT! Yesterday was a doozie! Great day until 2 pm when my husband texts me about a school shooting where we have friends whose kids go there, including my friend that I just had a 2 hour lunch with. I got to be the one to tell her when I texted her to keep me updated and she responded with something else entirely so I knew she didn't know, so I called her and broke the news, but he's okay: I'd forgotten her kid was on a school trip to Yellowstone, thank god! I also texted our good friends who both kids go there including my daughters BFF. I go to pick up my own kid, and she hasn't heard so I haven't told her until after I got confirmation that her best friend and brother are okay. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! Next I'm looking at my kids phone, a video she made for a class when a SnapChat comes in from a boy she's been talking to. TLDR: he's asking her to send nude pics, tears and drama ensues. Thoughts & Feelings: It's so good not to have crap in the house. I would have done some serious damage to Ben & Jerry last night. I'm a bit worried for today, I feel like I'm on a drama hangover right now and that can be worse than the actual drama. I'm making myself accountable here, then I'm going to go get on the bike trainer to keep up my daily workout goal (and cause it's raining outside), then grocery shopping and MAYBE lunch with some girlfriends...they are going somewhere where the only compliant thing I can probably get is a glass of iced tea. We'll see where my strength reserves are.

Come on over to the logs - there's a good group of us who are logging regularly that starting on and around May 1st. Not Moderatored but there's support.

DAY NINE Breakfast: Remainder of pineapple, some almond butter (and then I PUT IT IN THE CUPBOARD AWAY), half a pack of baby carrots, three servings of olives, three hardboiled eggs Lunch: Whole30 bowl from Chipotle with extra guac (seriously, SO much guac, they goofed my order so they gave me pretty much a pint’s worth of guac… I ate all of it) Dinner: Coconut curry meatballs over cauliflower rice and a sunny-side up egg Snacks: A mango, two plastic tubs of raspberries, kombucha, almond butter, an Rx bar... Exercise: None… my foot was super painful yesterday so I decided to take a rest day, but now it doesn’t hurt at all?! OK self Thoughts/Reflections: I’m posting this log to stop myself eating. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. NONE OF THIS FOOD TASTES THAT GOOD. At least the almond butter is in the trash now. And I’m trying to stay accountable to all of you, and list everything I’ve had. At least I think that was everything? Ugh. The dinner recipe was great, definitely check it out if you’re looking for something curry-ish. But definitely taste it as you do, mine was lacking salt and that extra punch, so I had to add some hot sauce a little later. Well, I guess I’m still Whole30 compliant, but it was a tough one today. I very nearly fell off the wagon this one. Feeling extremely discouraged and extremely pathetic, to be whining about something like this that shouldn't be a problem. I guess the one victory is that I never seriously considered drinking? Maybe I should complete take fruit out of my diet for a while?

    Mini Meals

Thank you both! This is my plan for tomorrow : - Aim for closer to 100 oz of water (I’m about 112 lbs) - I have been having headaches also so maybe this will help that too. - Have a full breakfast first thing rather than starting with a mini meal. - Larger overall meals. - Potential mini meals if I find that I need them will be chicken with a cauliflower/coconut cream sauce or HB eggs with guacamole. We will see how that goes! @EmilyK Thank you so much for that encouragement! It’s like God knows exactly when I need to hear these things, and that is EXACTLY where my head has been the last few days. You are so right. I so appreciate the kind words - I needed them.

Anyone else notice that compliant bacon cooks much quicker?? Almost burned mine in close to half the time my regular stuff would cook in the oven. The fire department may or may not have come when the smoke alarm went off - but I didn't hear it because I was outside. Cute fireman asked when I told him what happened "But is the Bacon okay?"

Day 4,573 of my captivity: I hate everything and everything sucks and there is no such thing as joy ever again. Breakfast: coffee with coconut cream; two egg & ham frittatas, leftover greens Lunch: fizzy water; one egg & ham frittata, leftover greens, sweet potato coated in bacon fat Dinner: Paleo Indian Beef Curry with Herbed Cauli-hash Thoughts & Reflections: Today sucks. I'm 99% it's hormonal, but that knowledge helps exactly none. I am grouchy, and feel like a malevolent cloud just waiting to unleash Armageddon on an unsuspecting victim. Maybe it's the final winter storm that's currently coating everything in frigid rain. Maybe it's the snow forecast for tomorrow. Maybe it's the fact that there's a thing of muffins sitting on the kitchen counter that I have to continue not eating every single time I walk past them. Who knows. But today? Not the best day. I am now 30% complete with this experiment. I thought for a brief moment I could stop on Memorial day, instead, but that is only 28 days, rather than 30 (decidedly fewer than my self-prescribed 33). Sigh. So. Since Memorial Day wouldn't let me finish at 30 days I may as well continue. Annoying. I am very hopeful that tomorrow is a better mental health space than today.

That is a LOT of drama! I'm glad your daughter and her friends were all OK. I am so tired and angry with all these threats at the schools, and outright violence occurring on campuses. Well done of maintaining your compliance despite a highly dramatic day. I hope you're able to sort the SnapChat thing out with your daughter. I don't let mine partake in any form of social media for this very reason.

Butcher Box saved me! It’s really affordable, about $6 a meal for organic/pasture raised meats. I saw a few documentaries on factory farming so I try not to support it as much as possible. butcherbox.com

Start of Day 3 - feeling tired. oh so tired. It's also a very rainy day today which isn't helping my sleepiness. I get up at 4 am to take kickboxing classes at 5 am and the hardest part of this Whole30 Program so far has been cutting out my Pre-Workout energy drink and Post-Workout shakes... feeling the caffeine withdrawals! Anyone else?

    30 Day Time Machine

Two near slips: 1) yesterday I go to fill up my iced tea before leaving lunch. I must not have been paying attention and accidentally got the sweet tea. GROSS!!! If I hadn't been in the middle of the restaurant I would have spit it on the floor. I then just threw away my cup. No I'm not starting over. I'm not worried about the added sugar of one sip of something I can't stand anyway. 2) had to ride the bike trainer today, which I haven't done in at least a couple of weeks. I keep some Honey Stinger gels by my bike and about popped one in my mouth without even thinking! I moved them over next to my husbands bike so he can eat them. I know at some point I'd just have one out of habit!

Ha! No I hadn’t noticed that. I’m out of bacon and my avocados are not ripe I don’t know what I’m going to do for fat tomorrow morning. I guess nuts or olives.

Thanks for the tips, all! Last night was MUCH better so hopefully we are on our way out of this phase! @Pandora Black Paper books are the best! You should definitely try it sometime.

    Starting May 1!

This is my first Whole 30 adventure. Yesterday was Day 1 for me. Am looking forward to this journey and am interested in recipes. I eat relatively healthy, but felt that I needed a program to "clean things up a bit". And, I wanted something to help with a weight loss plateau. Glad to be a part of this journey!

    Sleep Issues

Oh so this is normal? I’ve been having some sleep disruptions, I was up all night long on day 2. But I’m bipolar and for me that happens sometimes. I didn’t think it was related but maybe it was. Anyway, here are some basic tips I leaned in the hospital for sleep, in general. *Limit caffeine! Especially after like 12 p.m. It takes about 8 hours to clear caffeine from your system. *Try not to use your computer or watch t.v. late at night. The light keeps your brain active. They say (and I ignore this) to just read a regular paper book before you sleep. *Valarian root is a natural sleep aid. It tastes and smells kinda awful, but it works like a charm. I really like it in the Nighty Night tea by Traditional Medicinals.

    Just Need Encouragement

Our butcher is just kind of... here... they've been in our area (downtown in the major city right next door) for years, long before we moved here. In the past, I've always seen butchers as more expensive too, and they have been where I lived previously. This one, though, I love. They're not always cheaper for everything, but every week they run specials on several items, so I always take a look to see what they've got going on. Because they're across town, though, I will only go to them if I know I'm going to get a great price compared to what I'd see at my grocery store that's about a mile away. At Lanier's (our butcher), they have the large bags but they also sell regular 1-lb and 3-lb packs of meat, and they've got the meat counter where you can pick out steaks or rashers of bacon or what have you. The smaller packs are generally priced about the same as Kroger, I think, but their sales are the draw. I really, really hope you've got someplace similar where you are because it definitely makes it worth it. I've found that fancier or more gimmicky shops tend to mean higher prices, though, so I stick to plain and simple when looking for where to buy meats and produce. For any meat, I typically remove a good deal of the fat unless it's good quality. When cooking, I will usually supplement extra coconut oil to make up for what I took away during prep.

    Mini Meals

Yes, definitely starchy veggies and more nutrient-dense choices for your mini-meals for sure. I've found that it's easier to drink enough water if I use a straw (I'm also still a breastfeeding mama, although my baby is 14 months old now and only nursing once or twice per day)--conventional wisdom says 1/2 ounce per pound of body weight each day but that should probably be closer to 1-to-1 since you're lactating. I noticed that my hydration had the biggest effect on my supply, and if I drank an obscene amount of water I had much better pump output than if I wasn't pushing fluids like crazy. It is okay to not eat if you're not hungry, though...if you can, I would try and focus on getting larger meals overall and then adding in 1-2 mini meals if you are still hungry at any particular point throughout the day. Also, off the topic of meal structure--any breastmilk you give your baby is a gift and please don't make yourself insane trying to cut out that one bottle of formula. I nursed my two older kids exclusively (they're 10 and 13 now) but this one has been a tank from day one (he's 32 pounds now at 14 months, if that tells you anything!) and try as I might I just couldn't keep up with his full intake. I struggled with that, and feelings of inadequacy for awhile, but the truth of the matter is that we were both happier and less stressed out once I stopped trying to eke out every last drop for him. My supply didn't take any further hits with that one bottle and once I freed myself from the expectation of EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING ONLY OR I FAIL, I was able to be a much happier mom for him which is worth more than the gold star of him never having formula. While this may not be where your head is, I know how intense the pressure to exclusively breastfeed can be and new mom's don't need any more pressure at all. We all really need to be kinder to ourselves.

    Sleep Issues

hey @emilyelowe - nice to see you back here! Sleep disruptions are pretty common. Depending on how long ago your first Whole30 was, time has passed, our hormones change up as we age and whatever rebalancing you're going through could be affecting your sleep this time. I had sleep disruption in my first and third Whole30. The first one lasted 14 days and the third one lasted just a few.

    Sleep Issues

The acne I've got no insight on... sorry! For the sleep issue, though, I do have a thought. I slept great for the first couple of days, probably because I was half-comatose from giving up added sugars and empty carbs! I started having trouble getting to sleep at night, though, and experimentation taught me that I was going too low-carb with my dinners. I know now that I have to make sure I have at least a fist-sized (maybe more like 1.5 since my hands are small) amount of starchy veg with my dinner, or I'll have trouble getting to sleep and won't feel rested when I wake up regardless of how long I make myself lay in bed. It may be something different for you, of course, but it's worth looking at your meals and seeing if shifting things around a little helps out

I prefer a milder sausage, myself, and generally have to make sure my 9yo can also enjoy it because it's one of the few meats she'll eat. This is the recipe I've been using for my breakfast sausage: For every 1 lb of ground meat (I use turkey for mine) -- 1-2 tsp dried sage 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper pinch marjoram, dried pinch cloves, ground I adapted my recipe from this one: https://40aprons.com/easy-whole30-breakfast-sausage-paleo/ When I first made theirs, I reduced the salt to 1/2 tsp per pound of meat, and even that was a little on the salty side (but everyone liked it so I kept it that way in my notes). I also added in marjoram because I like it in my sausage, and skipped out on the poultry seasoning and crushed red peppers from the original recipe (I didn't have either one, but neither is actually needed for me to enjoy the result!) We also regularly purchase Aidells Chicken & Apple sausage, which we enjoy on its own or mixed into other dishes. It makes a nice break from the home-made stuff, too, especially if we've run out and I haven't prepped more yet!
