k9zoo got a reaction from Elizabeth33 in Hello! Starting January 14
Hi everyone! Just found the "starting 1/14" page. My friend, Liz, and I started 1/14 and so far so good. This is my second round and her first. I am not having near the issues I had in round 1, like crying every day. Perhaps because I did that round all alone. So just checking in for now and will watch all the wonderful progress and ideas from my seat in the Dallas, TX area.

Hi, I'm Michelle. My friend, Liz, and I are starting Jan 2nd also. I did a whole30 reset in 2017. I kept a few notes about how I felt. For me, the first week was bad then it was only better after that. My best advice is to plan and prepare. So many grocery stores are carrying good products now that it makes things a little  easier. Get some "go to" meals you can have or make in a pinch. I always had hard boiled eggs on hand for a quick breakfast.  Breakfast was my hardest meal although I did have a note on day 20 that I was tired of Vegetables.  Lol. Good luck and let's do this together!!!

Major NSV I have learned upon reintro -- I no longer like Diet Coke!!!!! I was an addict...a chain drinker as I called myself. I wanted to test it out so I got a Route44 at Sonic. I took a long sip and thought it tasted gross and just like syrup. I waited a while and took another sip, thinking surely it would change. Nope. Still gross. I gave it to my mom and grabbed a bottle of water. Now I know.
I haven't reintro'd as slowly as I thought I would. I'm starting a different but similar program on Monday for 10 days that my personal trainer runs. It's not quite as restrictive as W30, but very similar. So I wanted to get a few things in quickly just to see how they tasted.
Night 1 - PB&J on white bread with milk was first. Immediate dull headache for the rest of the evening.
Night 2 - 2 Beers, pretzel and cheese. Nothing dramatic.
Night 3 - More beer, cheeseburger and a few fries. Major heartburn. Had to dig into the Prilosec for the first time in 30 days.
Morning 4 - Donuts and milk. Majorly sweet tasting. Dull headache and sleepy and hungry an hour later.
Next I'll probably throw some beans into the W30 chili I made, but I'm about done with my tests. I feel too good and don't want to go back.

It has been awhile since I been here.  I am a consultant and my client requested me by surprise to fly out for a board meeting with one full days notice.  Well that sounds great but it is in a remote area of Alaska and there is only one restaurant.... and I had only a very very small fridge and a microwave at the offices and I needed to be out there for 5 days with the potential of 6 or 7 if a storm blew in and the planes did not fly. (This also means fresh foods are not on the shelves because the resupply planes could not come) but they usually have frozen veges)  There is no driving back to the larger city there are no roads so you have to fly.  Panic.  Lucky for me I have an experienced W30 partner which also travels and I had dinner with her that night.  She was like no problem this is what I do.  Which then started me on YES I CAN!  So I had left over pot roast which I froze in Vac-Seal bags, pork chops and roasted veges again sealed up, took out cans of compliant tuna, a cup of olive oil, LOTS of cut up veges, green leafy vegies, compliant avocado dip, hard boiled eggs and a cooler.  Guess what it worked.  I STAYED compliant.  Wow what a break through for me.  I can eat good and still go out to the villages.  It was funny for my first lunch the client and lawyer wanted to go out to lunch.  So I brought my prepacked lunch to the restaurant told them I was on a restricted diet and they said no problem eat away.  Plus next time I go out there the breakfast cook makes the best eggs and I asked if he would make them with my oil and if I could put a yam in the microwave.  He looked at me a little strange but said sure no problem.  My gosh I spoke up and now I even have more options when I travel remote.  I CAN do this.
I am doing a W60 so if anyone else is let me know.  I found I needed more time the last time I did a W30 plus it becomes less of a countdown into a eating lifestyle for me over the 60 days  (I started Feb 1)
Thanks for everyone here, all the ups and downs and comments of encouragement.I   am all caught up now on reading the post.

No judgement taken. You're right about all the negatives. And I remember when I cut it out once before that it didn't taste that great when I tried it again. I need to remember that.

A not very proud moment from my day. . . . put dish soap on my stash of medjool dates before throwing them in the garbage. Last night I thought I could eat ONE but quickly ate THREE! How sad is it that I knew I should put soap on them to make sure future me doesn't go through the trash for them!? Day 27 with so much more learning to do.

I had a mishap today. Made some tea, which I've done a number of these Whole 30 days. Grabbed a different flavored teabag that I hadn't had for awhile...Celestial Seasonings Country Peach Passion. Took one sip and remember to look at the ingredients.  Argh....the dreaded soy lecithin. Dumped the rest of the cup out. Too late to spit out what I took. My helpful husband suggested I drink some hydrogen peroxide to vomit it all up, like we did for the dog when she ate chocolate. LOL.
Now I understand why people clean out their cupboards of all non-whole 30 compliant food.  It's Day 25 and I am not restarting over one sip of tea.
On the UP side...I made my own clarified butter this evening(that was interesting) as well as sweet potato soup (recipe from the Whole 30 book).  Yummy. I drool over the recipes. I have not had time yet to make half of these marvelous looking recipes, but I've made a number and have truly enjoyed everything. Everything tastes so delicious.
Some of my NSVs: I've had good energy throughout and my thinking is clearer. I've had very few headaches which were light but fairly regular before.  My pants are looser. My skin is softer. I've been more positive. I've learned to eat slower and savor my food. I've learned to not snack between meals or after dinner, which is amazing for me. Woo Hoo! Grateful for this journey and for the sharing on this forum.

Glad to hear everyone is feeling positive now we're on the home straight. I've got 8 days left but can almost taste the glass of wine I'm going to have at the end. Went for the meal tonight and it wasn't quite to plan but meh, good enough. Had chicken wings to start. They were definately deep fried, may have had some kind of grain based coating and I think they had sugar on them. Honestly it was like eating a chicken donut! I felt very sorry for myself when my steak and salad came out and started making plans for a meal when I got home, totally convinced it wouldn't fill me, but actually it was very good and I was quite happy to turn down dessert for a cup of chai  tea. We've just got back to the house and I've made myself a mini meal of 3 strawberries, 8 grapes and a handful of cashews. I realise that I've technically screwed up with the chicken wings but I'm not starting over, I'll be sure to have 8 more fully compliant days before reintros and call it good enough. At the end of the day, I didn't fail due to cravings or because I chose to go off plan and I'm still pretty proud of how i did.
In other news, i made some tuna salad to have this afternoon with home made mayo. My mum (who doesn't have fat in anything) tried some and told me it was really greasy. She was quite shocked at how much oil went into it, whereas I can't believe how much sweetener and snacks she has as in her healthy eating plan. Different things work for different folks though, and this definately works for me!

Hi whole30ers, my mom called last night and told me something I wanted to share with you all. In the beginning of this journey (day 4ish) I went to a baby shower and had to pass up lots of yummy treats and desserts. The people sitting around me asked why I wasn't eating anything but veggies. I told them about the whole30 program and how it brings awareness to what we put in our bodies. My mom ran into one of those ladies from the shower the other day and she told her how she had cleaned up her diet and started to notice changes. She said I inspired her to become more healthy! NSV
just when I thought it was becoming pointless, I learn I'm inspiring others to live a healthy life, which is one of the reasons I started in the beginning. I hope you all are enjoying your whole30 changes. We are almost there, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!!

I've been thinking about this too. The solution I've come up with is not food freedom and I'm not sure it's in the spirit of whole30, but like you I find it so much easier with the strict rules of w30. So I'm thinking that after reintroduction, I can have 10 "worth it" things a week. Let's face it,  i didn't end up 100 pounds overweight by having a sensible opinion of what's worth it. I already know some things aren't worth it - pasta, brown bread, cheap cakes bought from the corner shop with a 2 year expiry date - and I'll do reintros to confirm more. But honestly, I struggle to believe that asking myself "do I really want this" "is it going to be worth it" is going to come back with the answer "no" when it comes to freshly baked bread, fancy cupcakes and yummy booze. Not to mention chocolate! And that would be fine if I was happy with my size and could reign things in a little if I start to bloat, but I'm not and experience tells me I can't. So for now, arbitrary limits I think may be the way forward, because I can't face doing a whole 90 or 120 or 365, and my definition of "worth it" needs to be refined carefully.

Some encouragement is needed around here so I'm posting a mint that loves to encourage. He's cute!!!  Think of something positive you are doing/feeling...are you seeing payoffs in other areas? Do you feel empowered by doing W30 because you have control over what you are eating? have you tried a new food that you really enjoy? have you influenced someone in your family or maybe a co-worker to eat better because they see you are doing it? Struggles are going to happen to all of us. But realize you are making positive and healthy changes!
We are getting close to the finish line and I'm sure you are thinking about reintroduction - below is a link to the planner I've used that helps me track what group Im re-introducing and how that foods makes me feel.

Hi all, and day 20 here. I just want to chime in that this 30 days is hard for lots of reasons, and one of those reasons is that it has an effect on all parts of our lives. For instance, my husband is not doing the plan, and things are a little tense between us. We're used to commiserating about our days over a few beers. Of course, it's possible to still commiserate over Kombucha, but I get the distinct feeling that my new nutritional state isn't exactly giving him the warm fuzzies! I try to remember that this is my interest and my idea, and it's not fair or realistic to need an infinite amount of support from him or anyone else who is not along for the ride.
So, I just want to say "hang in there" because these times are tough, but that's THE sign that something positive is happening - you're breaking through to a new version of yourself, and while that's not always a super comfortable transition, it is to be honored and trusted. So, cry (like me) over your scrambled eggs, but then give yourself a pat on the back for trying to conscientiously become a better version of yourself. A better version of yourself FOR yourself and for the ones you love. We all know in our heart of hearts that are bodies are thanking us for this focused and clean living, even if we haven't received a handwritten note from our waistlines.
I am telling myself this as a booster because I'm struggling, too. I just wanted to reach out and give a internet-hug to all of us getting "emotional"; meaning, we're tuning in to our bodies and our realities and we're taking an honest look at habits, impulses, and the places where we go auto pilot.
Our bodies appreciate the time we are spending on them! I know I feel it - at least here and there and more and more with every past hurdle that I leap.
Let us keep fighting this good (and sometimes fun) fight

    Hi All,
Had a great weekend at my Irish Immersion ... just about everyone was jealous of my meals that I brought with me. The Marist Brothers are great but a lot of the food is something you would get at summer camp. Saturdays Menu: Sausage, Pancakes, fruity yogurt and cereal for Breakfast Hotdogs, Curly Fries and Broccoli Cheese Soup for Lunch and Breaded chicken baked potato and maple carrots with a small salad bar for Dinner not exactly super Whole30 friendly. But I came well prepared with Snapwares full of whole 30 meals. One of the hardest parts was not to visit the shared snack table that has all the cookies candy chips that you could imagine. Although there was some fruit so I snagged a Halo to have with my lunch.
The toughest part came after the Ceili, Irish Party Dancing Music etc., we were sitting around playing cards chatting and one of the teachers from Ireland brought over a bottle of Bailey like liquor and was passing out small samples to everyone and I was like no I really can't have any. Which was met with the response from multiple people "Oh go ahead you can have a bit." "its only a mouthful that's not even cheating" Etc. etc. and I have to tell you I was really tempted for like a split second A. because I love cream liquor like Baileys B. Definitely a social drinker C. Damn Peer pressure, Damn you! and then I looked at the clock on the wall and realized it was after midnight and that meant I was on day 21 was I really going to give up all the hard work for the past 20 days for a mouthful of liquor. NO!!! I'm actually glad that this event came closer to the end of my Whole30 that really helped me stave off the temptation!

@treeny_bash What is the plan for your sister's birthday meal? is she cooking a big meal? Are you going out? Have you had a chance to talk to her about your W30? Let's make sure you've got a good plan for that party so you don't have to worry about ruining your W30 right at the end! Would it be possible to offer to bring a dish to contribute? And maybe one of the W30 cocktails, nuts or olives too? Or maybe eat before you go so you can make it through the event without really eating? Don't grab that wine just yet! I feel your pain, I really miss it too! Soon!!

We just had the chili someone else posted and it is sooo good!  Basically one onion chopped and 3 gloves of garlic, 2 lbs of grass fed beef ground 90% lean 4 chopped tomatoes 1 can of tomatoe paste 1 jalapeño 3 carrots finely chopped 2 celery chopped 1 cup of chopped or sliced black olives 2-3 tbsp of chili powder I use ancho chili and regular salt coriander to taste simmer for a while and the. Serve on top of spirilized zucchini (raw) sprinkle with some cilantro!  It was excellent and then you can have it for breakfast with an egg on top!

Just got caught up on several pages of the forum. Thank you all for sharing! It helps to read some of the same things I've been experiencing. First, a few NSVs, 1) Valentine's Day - as with many of you, the sweets were a bit hard to avoid, but I did and even had the family open a triple decker chocolate cake at the table and the chocolate smell was so overwhelming. My sweet dad quickly put the top back on and ate his piece by the sink behind me. 2) Yesterday I went to a movie grill and actually ordered grilled chicken, avocado and water. I'm usually a hamburger, fries and diet coke person at these places. This is the absolute first eating plan I have ever been on that has lived up to the promises of feeling better. I've definitely had my cry times, angry times and craving times the last 21 days, but I feel so much more positive about things and not as easily overwhelmed. I have suffered from major depression for decades and, while I still take anti-depressants, I finally think there may be other solutions. That's what has totally kept me going!  I have yet to get the tiger blood and energy lift although I feel a bit more energetic. My recliner is just too comfy! That's my next goal--getting more active.
I do need to make some different things this week as I'm getting some food boredom set in, especially with veggies. I'm also very sleepy as several have mentioned. Perhaps more activity will help that. So here's to a strong finish and better choices in the future!!!
