@kellyfoss Sorry about the sneaky salsa!  I am also feeling really great and was thinking about staying a little longer but I think I have successfully mapped out a preliminary plan for reintroduction that I am excited about.  I have decided to stay away from alcohol for a bit longer, at least through the end of Lent.  If pregnant ladies can do it for 9 months, I certainly can do it for 40 days!  I am nervous about dairy and gluten.  I have never had a serious issue with either that I know of, but the more I am reading about reintroductions, the more people I see who have had sensitivities.  I don't want to feel sick which is maybe why I want to stay on longer.  I am on Spring Break the second week of April so I am planning most reintros for that time period.
When we started the whole 30 in February I was doing a good job of working out as well.  I love to walk outdoors and enjoy lifting weights or using weight machines at the gym.  I am not a fan of indoor cardio machines but try to use them on occasion anyways (the former Skyfit now Aaptiv app is helpful).  Unfortunately, I hit a bit of a stall with the working out about day 8 or 9 when I was feeling particularly sluggish and I am finally feeling ready to jump back in.  I have an absolutely CRAZY busy week coming up since I am music director of a show that goes up next weekend so I am prepping myself to get back into my walking routine on Monday, April 3.  If time allows, I will do it sooner-- possibly even this afternoon (my last few hours of freedom until the show is over on Sunday the 2nd!).   Hopefully the weather will warm up in the next several days!
Now, to be slightly petty for a minute, I find that I am frustrated when I see people who sell shakes-which-shall-remain-nameless or fixes that last between 20 and 22 days on Facebook and other social media talk about clean eating.  THIS. THIS IS CLEAN EATING.  Don't get me wrong, do what works for you I truly believe that, but we have been eating seriously clean and whole for the past 26 days.  I am so happy about the way I am eating, particularly the hoards of vegetables and proper plate set up.  I feel like it's easy now.  I know what I can eat and what I can't and it really is becoming habit.  I just feel like there are so many lies out there about proper food consumption.  Have I drank too much of the (sugar, gluten, dairy, & soy free) Whole30 hypothetical "cool-aid" that now I am extra aware of other food/diet fads that are just not the same?  I just want to shout "NO!! GO BUY WHOLE30!!!" LOL.  To me, someone who has tried IT ALL, this is the answer and this is how I need to approach food forever (which reminds me, I must buy "Food Freedom Forever" before it's all said and done!).
By the way to everyone in this group...we ROCK.  WE REALLY ROCK.  I am so grateful for this forum and that I have a place to communicate how I am feeling and receive positive support from others in the same boat.  This has been seriously helpful and you all inspire me to keep walking past that candy aisle in CVS!!!!

I'm planning on following the sample reintroduction starting on Day 31.  I feel great right now so I'm really interested to see what happens when introducing non compliant foods.  I have eaten gluten free for almost 4 years.  I'm a little nervous trying it again.  The main reason I'm doing the Whole30 is for the reintroduction.  My family is ready for the 30 days to be over so they don't have to eat so much meat.  There are somethings that they really liked and will definitely be in our rotation of recipes.  1 week to go!  Good Luck!

Sorry to post again today but a lady at work gave me cookies for helping her with the computer and they sat in my room all day and then I let my kids who stay after school have some cookies.  OMG talk about willpower.  They looked so good.  I was thrilled when the kids finished them!!  Whew...that was a close one.

To those of you speaking about sugar addiction, I am right there with you. My sugar dragon is more like a sugar Godzilla. My "therapy" most days when things get hard was to bake something after work and usually eat most, if not all, of what I baked. I would buy entire tubs of pre-made cookie dough and just go to town when I was feeling depressed. I was incapable of passing up any sweet treat at work that someone brought in, and would occasionally buy chocolate or cookies at the store and eat it all in one sitting without batting an eye. The past couple of weeks when I've been stressed, the FIRST thing on my mind is "how can I find something sugary" because it always makes me "feel better", but only temporarily of course. Then I feel disgusting and tired and worse than I did before.
My boyfriend has often (lovingly) told me that if I don't check this problem now when I'm younger, I may be looking at diabetes and a host of other issues later on. And he's totally right. So this is my way of trying to do that, and so far so good. I hope we all stay strong and come out of this much healthier people overall!

I so admire your admission and sharing your struggles. You are brave! I believe sugar is a mind altering substance just like alcohol and heroin. It is for me, I could eat piles of skittles and Jelly Bellys and even as a kid I would tuck into a huge bag of M&Ms and eat until I was sick. I quit sugar for a couple of years, but drank a lot wine - just another form of sugar. When I gave up alcohol altogether 8 years ago, man oh man did I go after sugar! There are bakeries in Mexico, where I live part time and vacation often, that are a wonder. It's all self serve, you get a tray and tongs and wander through the racks of Mexican pastry & cookies. My ritual when we did our first vacation shop was to fill that tray with as many cookies, pastries and cakes as I wanted. You take it to the counter and they bag and price the haul, I always had at least 2 bags. I justified it because Mexican baked goods aren't overly sweeet, but the bags would soon be drenched in grease and full of crumbly sugar crumbs. I would always tuck into one of the bags before we go to the house, a good hour drive. The rest of vacation was a binge. "On vacation" meant baked goods all day. I would return from vacation just as bloated and puffy as I would have been binging on alcohol.
Ill never go back to that addiction. I'm grateful I was able to break the binge cycle with Whole30. I had literal withdrawals on about day 3. Sweats, headache, nausea and chills. I'm clean of sugar now and it feels pretty damn good. Never again.
Thank you for sharing TeacherFitJourney - you inspire me to be as scared of sugar as I need to be.

So I don't know if I have ever talked on here about my serious candy/sugar thing that was going on for like, I don't know, most of my life I guess.  I am at my night job and it is quiet and I spent a lot of time reading through the forums on reintroduction of sugar and started to think about my candy situation and am hoping it's okay with you all if I share here because I just need to get this out!! I LOVE candy.  It's like a thing with me.  My friends and I used to (like years ago, early/mid 20s) base a lot of our jokes around my obsession with SPKs (sour patch kids...).  I struggled to go to CVS and not walk down the candy aisle and buy something.  If we were on vacation, i would go straight to the inevitable candy store and buy myself some bulk candy because "I'm on vacation."  And really, I did this just days before starting the Whole 30 when my boyfriend and I went to Mohegan Sun in CT for a few nights.  I have always hated this sugar dragon so to say because it really felt like an addiction.   It has made me feel embarrassed and fear stores that don't have self checkout!!!!  I would buy candy for kids at school or my staff over the summer as a total JOKE-- it was all so I would have candy for myself.  I have done some seriously obscene things when it comes to packs of starbursts that I'd rather not mention!!! Ugh.  Every year at Lent I would give up candy and chocolate and feel amazing, but on Easter I was always down to grab that Easter basket and not look back, as if it was some sort of reward. Why why why why why!?
Anyway, I am writing this because I seriously was a candy addict before the Whole 30 and I literally feel like I have been changed!!!  I cannot say that I will never chomp down on another sour straw in my life, but I DO NOT WANT TO EVER EVER EVER AGAIN.  What was I doing to myself!? Like not only was I consuming something so completely disgusting for me, I was totally feeding this addiction.  I know we are on day 18 with 12 days + a lifetime to go, but seriously, thank you Whole 30 because I do not ever want to go back there.
And now that I have gotten that out there... I wish you all a wonderful day 19 and beyond! Thanks for reading if you got this far!

OK for crunch--because I was SO missing that-- I sliced some sweet potatoes really thin with mandolin slicer.  Tossed in oil with everything salt.  Layered them on a pan with parchment paper, bake at 350 for twenty minutes, flip (rotate trays if necessary) and bake another 15-20 until desired crispiness.  Just what the doctor ordered.  I really need that crunch.  If you have a spiralizer (which I LOVE), you can also do the same with sweet potatoes curly fries.  It was delightful.

Day 10 and I woke up in a funk too! Not super hungry but eating like I should. Last night I really wanted a twinkee of all things? I haven't eaten that since I was a kid! It is keeping me going knowing we are a third of the way through!!!
Anyone else grieving dairy? I really miss cheese!

So I totally forgot to take before pictures and I'm kind of bummed about it.  I think I will take some today so at least I have a point of reference, even if it is day 6.  Speaking of which...day six!! Woohoo!  We are moving along nicely.  This is going to sound strange but I swear my hands feel...lighter? or smaller? or simply just less swollen which is weird because I didn't even know they were swollen.  I teach music and therefore spend half of my day playing piano and am oddly aware of the fact that my hands feel different.  I am sure that swelling is starting to go down and hope that makes it's way around my body--- because come on let's go! Hahah.  Anyway I am super loving following this thread because it is so helpful and I really like the foods I have been eating.  Yes, lots of dishes to wash and prepping but it is working out well for me right now.  Have a great Saturday!

The myth that dietary cholesterol effects blood cholesterol has long since been de-bunked. You might want to have a read at >this article<, by Chris Kresser, or read the book 'Eat the Yolks' by Liz Wolfe.
Remember too that you don;t have to eat eggs for breakfast - how about a blended vegetable soup with some meatballs & mayo, or a burger patty with guac on the side? Even a chicken salad will work. Absolutely anything you eat for lunch & dinner you can eat for breakfast too. 'Breakfast foods' are not the way our ancestors used to eat. 'Breakfast foods' were a clever piece of marketing from the food industry...

My name is Erik, and I'm from Iowa.  My wife and I have 4 kids.  I'm the only one that is doing this 100%.  This will be my 1st Whole30.  I do most of the cooking so they'll eat what I make for dinner.  I have all my dinners planned out for the 30 days and can post some ideas if that would be of any help.  Take it one day at a time!

    Day 4
First real workout since I started. VERY hard. Cardio was fine but strength training had me quivering, using weights of very reasonable weight.
Yummy pumkin custard as pre-workout snack. 1 can pumkin, 4 eggs, 1 can coconut milk, 2 very ripe bananas, tsp pumkin pie spice and 1/2 cup chopped pecans on top. Pour batter into 9x13 pan, sprinkle on pecans and bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes until firm. Excellent chilled. Makes a lot!
Business lunch today, trying hard to get out of it!
Dying to weigh myself. There is for sure a change, the crap I was eating was probably gaining me a pound a week. Nowhere to go but down!

Tonight I'm making a frittata.  Sauteing some onions, browning beef.  Throwing some spinach, sweet potatoes, and red bell peppers with it for a while.  Then adding 10 eggs and baking it.  I've made it before and my kids like it so that's a plus.  Tomorrow we're having Pork Carnitas from the Whole30 cookbook.

    Hi Everyone,
I'm starting tomorrow too. I'm so glad there's so many of us beginning together. I really need the support!
I did a Whole 30 about a year ago. Back then it was to figure out allergens. This time I too have had major life changes affecting my health and fitness. In October I had an injury that has kept me from exercising like I used to. Now I need to lose weight AND quit all the bad eating habits I've accumulated and get back on track.
I'm much more excited to get started now that I've found a great group. I don't think I would've stayed motivated on my own.

I just cooked up some lemon rosemary chicken and butternut squash soup so I'm prepared for lunches for the next few days.
