Nearly a week in, folks!  Is everyone hanging in there?  I thought I was approaching tiger blood yesterday, but it was a false alarm.  I am feeling pretty good, much better than when I started on Day 1, but something is still missing.  Not too much motivation for projects and chores yet.  Sigh.  Hopefully soon!  Here's to a successful day seven and and awesome week 2 starting tomorrow.
@AH117 Yeah, we're in that phase of "I dream of (insert favorite junk food).  It will pass!

    Hi everyone!
Day 5 checking in. @Svmomma that chicken tender recipe sounds so yummy. I think I will try it for next week!  @Nancy61 I've also been experimenting with non-breakfast foods for breakfast and I find that I am more satisfied that way!
Everything was going well until yesterday when I started feeling awful. I have had a headache since last night and my stomach has felt a little queasy since yesterday morning. I am eating all 3 meals and following the meal template for pre-workout and post-workout meals. I did a 30 minute low impact, strength training class yesterday which is part of my normal routine. I usually walk home after but I felt so awful yesterday after the class, I had to get a cab. I had dinner, hydrated but the sick feeling continued into the night and I slept pretty badly. I feel a tiny bit better today but still not great. I am not sure if this is a normal reaction or if I am doing something wrong. Any advice?

Good Day 6 Morning everyone!  I got through a tough moment yesterday, when I thought I might crack.  When my wife and I reconnect at home after work on Friday, it normally means a glass of wine, a vodka tonic, or a whiskey sour on the deck.  Talk about our week, what the weekend will bring, and make that transition from work week to weekend.  It's one of my favorite parts of the week.  Well, last night we just stared at each other for a minute.  "What do we do now?"  We took a deep breath, and started making dinner, and the feeling past.  We don't drink a lot (in my opinion), but we do enjoy a cocktail with each others or friends.  So tonight, the next big challenge.  We are going to a BBQ with some old friends of my wife's.  They all used to work together, and haven't all been together in some time.  Sounds like lots of sweets, non-compliant salads, meat with non-compliant BBQ sauce, beer and wine are on the menu.  We are taking some things we can eat (shrimp with compliant cocktail sauce, a big green salad with chicken and Whole30 recipe dressing), and we will see how it goes.  This is a big part of my relationship with food and booze that I'm working on changing.  I see it as a reward (for a long work week, a stressful day, etc) or a part of a celebration that HAS to be a part of it.  Wish me luck!  Have a great day 6 everyone!
    Mike

I hope it is okay for me to join in now.  I "officially" started on Monday the 18th too.  Screwed up Monday night, so kind of re-started Tuesday.  I did well Monday, went to Costco (I agree, I was stunned at how much of their food is organic and compliant!)  Monday evening, as I was putting it all away, I ended up just cleaning out the fridge and freezer and getting rid of old and non-compliant stuff.  Mostly.  There was a bottle of wine with a good sized glass full left in it, and I drank it.   I am a terrible sleeper, and when I went to bed I took my usual melatonin and realized after that it is very sweet (chewables.)  So, started over Tues.  Now I'm doing well, from the compliance standpoint, but have had that nasty awful headache all day.  This is my first Whole 30, although I've known about it for at least a year and know several people who have done it.  I love to cook, and thus to eat, and just really didn't want to give up cheese and wine.  I used to be in very good shape, but over the past fifteen years I have had several bad injuries that required surgery and a lot of therapy.  I put on way more weight than I want to admit, and I'm to the point that I feel just disgusted.  I also have food cravings, and as already stated, am a terrible sleeper.  Over the weekend, I spent nearly all day reading online, ordering the books from Amazon, and making a plan.  I have never been a "joiner", although I am certainly a talker, so I didn't really look at the forums till just now.  I read through this one first, and like it.

I had some of those same issues a day before they hit you.  Reading through the book, it seems a lot of this is normal, especially in the first week.  That sick feeling and headache I had Wednesday and Thursday are not nearly as bad today.  The headache is gone, and the queasy feeling not so constant.  Hang in there, this is probably the withdrawl phase!    The workout might have made it worse too.  Good luck, glad to see you're still with us.

@kirbz Good job on navigating that happy hour! That a non-scale victory for sure.
Today is definitely the worst it's been so far. I am tired and my brain is in a fog and I'm in a constant state of mild irritation haha.

I'm starting Day 5 and am still not feeling anything... No headaches, no extra tiredness, no anger. I kinda just seem to be plugging along.
On a positive note, I successfully navigated a work happy hour last night with drinks and appetizers. It really wasn't that hard to just not do it. Of course, there wasn't any Rocky Road ice cream... LOL.
I continue to enjoy reading your experiences, stories, successes, and failures. It's all a learning experience and I so appreciate everyone being open and sharing!

Glad to hear everyone made it through Day 2! I had an RX bar yesterday after my workout because I was so hungry and that is all I had in my purse and just could not wait until I got home. I felt like it was a slip-up because even though it is technically compliant, it did quiet down my sugar dragon. It is almost as though my brain could not tell the difference between an Rx Bar and a cookie. That just confirmed to me that while some foods may be compliant, what is more important is if they're within the 'spirit" of the Whole 30. Just thought I would share that.
@Brad Cif you're active, the meal template says that the pre/post work-out meal is a special bonus meal that does not replace breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is a necessary source of additional calories. Pre-workout is 15-75 mins before and should be a small amount of protein and a small amount of fat ( no fruit/ carb-dense vegetables). Post-work out would be 15-30 mins after and should be a lean protein + carb dense vegetable with little to no fat. It also says not to use fruit as a post-work out snack.
Under forums sections of the website, there is a whole section dedicated to athletes and there are good tips and information for fueling appropriately.

Glad to hear everyone's positivity after the first couple of days! We did a couple of recipes in the Whole30 cookbook, and I've been making breakfast in the mornings. Everything tastes great! My appetite is waning though, and the idea of eating food isn't exciting to the point where I ask why I am. I remind myself I am pretty active and need food. I really desparately wanted to binge on some cookies after a stressful day at work and with my grad school classes. I refrained knowing that it'd make me feel worse about myself.... even though they're SO good.
@DrewMc @AthenaC andTo everyone struggling with that sugar dragon-you may get a kick out of this. I was woken up in the middle of the night (may have been 1 am) by my boyfriend poking my arm and telling me that today was going to be bad. Me, still partly asleep and feigning care for whatever it was asked why. He replied "I need sugar." This literally woke him up in the middle of sleep, at which point he felt the need to tell me.

I am sorry to hear about your headache  Glad you're feeling better and ready for the new day. Mine went well- I was craving something sweet after dinner so badly but I took a couple of deep breaths and had some tea and that seemed to work. Now that the first day is done, I am feeling a little confident. Have a wonderful and healthy day!

Hello all...I'm happy that this time there are so many doing it with me..and I can talk about it...it will help to say no to cravings... I remember the first time I did it...the headache is normal...don't worry...it means the sugar is leaving your body...I know..I'm a sugar addict... and now after one year it's easier to say no and walk away.  Also plan on feeling listless...and no energy...till one day in the next month you feel great...and do not under any circumstances step on the scale!!! The weight is not important right now..but at the end you will be so amazed because it will show on the scale. I read and re read the whole 30 philosophy...it helped know why I felt the way I felt. My first day went okay...at night I wish I didn't snack..I had an apple and some  squash seeds toasted...tonite I'm promising myself no snacks...if you can stick to the 3 meals it's good...if you want a snack okay too.  I will let you know how that goes for me! Off to work...where I'm so busy I don't think about food! When I come home is when I crave...but I will look forward to your comments and I won't want to eat what I can't have! Have a great 2nd day!

So proud of you, @Brad C! That was a huge temptation! Too bad others don't go on the W30 with us, huh? Well, I don't really have that issue, but still I get the cravings. Lots I think is just because I know I can't have it. Yesterday I had to run to the store for some green onions and was tempted by everything! Then I stopped in at the gas station and was like "Oh, gummy worms! YUM!" I don't even really eat gummy worms!
    Anyhow, good job!!! Stay strong!

Glad to see so many people joining the group!  I got through Day 1 just fine.  I'm a little "off" this morning, but not bad.  The only issue I had yesterday was no desert and decaf after dinner.  I did the decaf (black), but felt like I was missing something (the sweets).  I realized it was just habit, and I wasn't hungry at all, and the feeling passed.  Only one day, but like Brad said, it all starts with one step.  I do need to drink some more water during the day.  That's never been an issue for me in the past, but I realized yesterday I had not drank nearly enough water.  Good luck to everyone today.  Thanks to all who are sharing tips and shopping ideas!

Well, mine went fairly well until I developed a bad headache in the evening. I was craving something sweet after dinner too, but ate a few grapes. Only problem was that it made me too stuffed and so sleeping with that stuffed feeling and with the headache was troublesome. Feeling better this morning and on to a new day! How about you?

Oh my goodness, I found the most AMAZING Whole30-compliant foods at Costco! I definitely didn't think they would have so much to offer! And most of them are super easy to put together into a meal. I'm winging my meal planning (because I despise it so very, very much that I simply would never do this program if I had to meal plan and do twice-weekly cookfests where I waste my whole damn day) and this made it just about as easy as it could be!
Here's what I got (in case you want to go look for it too):
Kirkland Signature Smoked Pulled Pork (just boil the package for 12-15 minutes and it's ready to go) Aidells Chicken and Apple Smoked Chicken Sausage Parma Prosciutto di Parma Farmhouse Culture Classic Caraway Kraut  True Story Organic Oven Roasted Turkey Breast Snack Packs (can you say post-workout meal anyone?) They had lots of other stuff too! Avocado oil, spice blends, guacamole, etc.! Go check it out, you might be surprised what you find!
I hope everyone had an excellent Day 1 and are feeling strong and confident!

Hi all, my husband and I started today as well.  We technically said we are starting tomorrow so I had today to prep after being out of town this weekend, but we jumped right in today.  I've done Whole30 before, but this is first time doing it with me. Over the past 5 years or so, I've gone to eating a mostly Paleo diet, but really sabotaged myself after getting frustrated with my health and nothing working.  So, for me, this is an opportunity to get back on track.  I do feel much better eating this way.
Penny, I'm 40 and have the same issues you listed - alopecia, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis.  Eating paleo/whole 30 style always helps my joint pain.
This go around I'm also working with a new-to-me integrative doctor to heal my gut with diet and some specific supplements.  I'm looking forward to doing this while working with this doctor.
Having done this before, I can say the three things that help the most to stick with it are COMMITMENT, SUPPORT, & PREPARATION.  Yesterday, I went grocery shopping.  Today, I cleaned out my pantry and plan on tackling the fridge tonight.  I've got 2 roasted chickens, bone broth, mayo, and chopped veggies ready to go as well as many of my other go-to favorites. I'll make a couple of Whole30 dressings tonight too to have ready.

Hi Folks! Do you mind if I join your group? There were two of us that started on Saturday, September 16 but I would very much love a larger group to go through this journey with. Having a support network is a big deal for me so I would be very appreciative in joining you guys!
I'm a 32-year old female and this is my second time trying the Whole30. I made it to Day 7 last year and then gave up. I'm committed to making it through this year and have some very legitimate goals that are motivating me to get through it! Mostly, I want to one day find myself 70 years old and still able to do all the things I love because my body is still healthy and strong. I can't say that today, let alone in so many years, so here I am!
If you're interested, I'm logging my meals and exercise as an extra mechanism of accountability under "Kira's Whole30 Log."
Thanks everyone and stay strong!! This is going to be SO worth it!

    Hi all!
I started today, as well. This is my first time doing Whole30 and my husband is also joining me on this journey! We have 3 kids and are on-the-go alot, so this will definitely be challenging. However, I'm excited to start and to see how much better I feel at the end! Can't wait to see all of the support on this page and to help each other along!
    Good luck!

WOW!  This group size is awesome -- definitely hoping that we can all pull each other along these next weeks.  Great to see so many people starting today.
Today is quite a different day.  Usually, I drive through McDonald's and get the large soda (only $1, so might as well get the largest size possible!) and a couple biscuits, or else Sunoco fountain soda and donuts.  Today, I made myself a nice omelet with peppers and tomato.
I am a teacher, and normally munch at our "team meeting" on cookies, popcorn, etc. -- today, just a small handful of cashews to try and manage my energy balance going cold turkey on everything.
Normally, on my way home I eat a pack of cupcakes or something, or else binge on some junk food when I get home from getting my daughter from school.  Today -- nothing.  Waiting for my chicken and steamed broccoli for dinner.
It is amazing to me how much eating has been mental for me.  I was not hungry until about 15 minutes before I ate lunch.  I am not hungry now.  But I feel like I NEED to eat to comfort myself.  Several times my mind wandered to a nice cold sugary cherry coke or the cookies in my classroom pantry that the team shares.  But then I remind myself that I don't need any of that, and that I am just poisoning myself with it.
I know that after dinner will be tough, as I also like to munch on some cookies and milk for dessert.  But I am going to have all of you right there with me tonight, and instead of those choices, I am going to just do some working out with weights, and then do a little mindfulness/relaxation and read before bed.
I'm glad to hear that I was not the only one nervous for today!  I too am excited to have better energy, sleep patterns, and clearer sinuses (among other things), but I was truly nervous this morning (and am still a little nit nervous, as I worry that I am going to let myself and everyone else down).  I know that the next few days and week(s) will be tough as I go through the sugar/bad carb withdrawals, but with all of your help, I look forward to turning over that new leaf we are all hoping for.
Even though I don't know any of you - I am considering myself as just one member of the "September 18th" team.  I am pulling for each and every one of you to reach your goals, to develop new relationships with eating, and to reach greater levels of health and happiness!
I hope to check in tonight, but if not -- stay strong team, and I look forward to reading all of your successes and fears and stories and everything else soon!

Glad to see so many people starting today.  I'm Mike and my wife Joanne and I are starting our first Whole 30 today.  I hope to learn and get support from all of you!  We are both 58 and we've decided that our lack of energy and weight gain needed some action.  I'm also interested in seeing if some of our unexplained aches and pains go away.  We both seem to have some sinus issues that might benefit from cleaner eating as well.  My wife uses thyroid medication, but thankfully I have no prescriptions at all.  We started our day off by having scrambled eggs with spinach, onion and red peppers.  It was very nice to sit and have breakfast with each other on a weekday for maybe the first time (we are chronic breakfast "skippers"!  We did have a cup of coffee before we ate (a habit that will be hard to break), but we did eat breakfast, so I will consider that a victory.  One thing we have going for us, is that we both drink our coffee black.
One challenge we will have for a bit is that we are between homes.  We sold our house a month ago, and have been living in a furnished apartment while our new condo is being remodeled.  We don't move in until Oct. 7th.  What makes it interesting is that almost all our stuff (especially kitchen stuff) is in storage!  There are pots and pans here, but not a lot.  i found out yesterday that we have no measuring cups.  We have measuring spoons though (did you know there are 12 tablespoons in 3/4 of a cup? I found that out making vinagrette last night.)   I did bring our BBQ grill and the weather has been nice in St. Louis, so I plan on doing a lot of grilling the next few weeks.  No food processor, slow cooker etc, so some of the recipes in the Whole 30 books I bought may have to wait, but we'll figure it out.
I think the biggest challenge/reward for us will be breaking the "sugar monster".  We both enjoy cookies, cakes, pies, etc to excess, so losing our nightly routine of a cup of decaf and dessert will be a big deal.  Reading labels, although eye opening, isn't that big a deal for me, and i do most of the shopping.
In any event. I look forward to hearing your stories, challenges, successes, and (hopefully not many) set backs.  Let's do this together!  Thanks for letting me join in the group!
    Mike
