I didn't lose any weight either! I actually gained 3 pounds as of Day 31 and then somehow lost them on Day 32. But personally I feel my NSVs are way better than a read-out on a metal scale. I decided to put the scale away for a while because it shouldn't affect how I feel. It sounds like your NSVs are pretty amazing. As far as you FF, if you really want a piece of chocolate cake, then it would be better to go to a restaurant, buy a good quality piece and really savor and enjoy it. But I recommend not baking a whole cake and keeping it in the house. It is too easy to eat too much of it if you have it at home. For me, FF works best when I have a well-stocked kitchen with healthy, delicious food. If I really am craving something, than I'll go out to a restaurant and have it there.

    "Who's starting 1/1?" Reintro Group

Hello all! This weekend I reintroduced wine, peanuts, chips (corn, plantain & potato) and beer. On Friday night I had 4 glasses of really good wine at a 70th birthday party celebration but alas I woke up the next day with a horrible headache. I definitely overdid it and will have to limit myself to 2 glasses the next time I have wine. On Saturday I kept mostly to Whole30 except for some peanuts. Yesterday at a Super Bowl party I stuck to the compliant guacamole I made and had it with corn chips, potato chips & plantain chips. Chips can definitely be a food with no brakes for me so I'll have to be careful with them. At the party, I also had 3 light beers and woke up fine today but not spectacular feeling. The beer tasted sweeter than usual to me. This week I am back to eating compliantly. I simple feel better when I eat well. I think I want to try a "Whole300" this year where I eat compliantly 5-6 days a week and if I feel like going out to dinner or having a drink on the other 2 days, I'll decide if "it's worth it" and then enjoy it. Basically, my goal is to eat compliantly for at least 300 days this year. I already have 32 days under my belt. Otherwise, I feel like it is too easy to lose the healthy habits I have formed. Anyone else interested in trying this approach to Food Freedom?

    Happy New Me!

I completed my Whole30 on December 26th and I feel amazing!!! I did not expect much of a change because I thought I had a pretty healthy diet before I started Whole30 with plenty of veggies, fruits, nuts & protein. I also regularly walk 4 miles a day and do yoga. However, my previous diet also included 3 cups of coffee a day with half & half & raw honey, cheese, hummus, greek yogurt, a daily glass or two of wine, dark chocolate, sourdough bread and butter. I occasionally ate tofu, edamame, pasta, rice, oatmeal and lentils. Basically the typical diet of a 42 year old woman who lives in California. The benefits of eating a Whole30 diet have surpassed my expectations and include: - Reduced bags under my eyes - Improved complexion - Smoother, younger looking skin - Better sleep - More energy - Eliminated my sweet, creamy coffee habit - I actually enjoy drinking my coffee black now. Sometimes I make a "Bulletproof latte" by blending a spoonful of coconut oil & ghee with my coffee in the blender. At work I drink hot tea instead of coffee. - Changed how I relax in the evening - Instead of unwinding with a glass of wine, I drink a glass of Kombucha in a wine glass or hot herbal tea. - Improved cooking skills - I have made so many new, delicious and interesting dishes this past month from the Whole30 cookbooks. - Faster & less expensive grocery shopping - I was already buying mostly organic poultry, grass-fed meat, wild-caught fish, pastured eggs and organic fruits & veggies. Now I am spending less money overall because I no longer buy expensive grass-fed dairy products and wine. I also stopped buying so many treats for my kids. My favorite advice from "It Starts With Food" is that I am in charge of what I buy at the market, my kids have no money to buy anything. - Better relationships with my husband and two children because I have more energy & patience. My family is not strictly following the Whole30 protocol but their diets have improved a lot. Both of my children have tried & liked more vegetables this past month & I am making sure they eat protein, fat & veggies at every meal & snack. They also sleep better and have more energy. - Reduced my BMI from 20.7 to 19.8 - I was slender to begin with and did not expect to lose 6 pounds. - Better body composition - My waist is smaller and my stomach is flatter. In the last week, I have reintroduced red wine, beer & raw honey. I do not miss dairy, grains, legumes & soy so I am not going to bother reintroducing them. I drank two glasses of a California Pinot Noir on the 26th and woke up the next day with a terrible headache and bags under my eyes. On the 27th I followed the Whole30 protocol but then drank two beers in the evening. Again I woke up the next day with a headache and decided to cut out beer. I didn't miss it that much. I went back onto the Whole30 protocol for a few days and immediately felt & looked better. On New Year's Eve, I drank two glasses of a good quality French Bordeaux wine but made sure to also drink three glasses of sparkling water. I also ate some walnuts with raw honey with my wine and before bed I drank more water. I woke up the next day with no headache. I feel best when I follow the Whole30 protocol and plan to only have wine occasionally on special occasions with friends. I am so happy that I completed the Whole30 and I only wish that I had discovered and tried it sooner. I am excited to head into middle age in optimal health!! I feel like I am a better version of myself & my whole family has benefitted from this lifestyle change. I wish everyone who has decided to embark on the 30 day challenge all the best. You can do it & you will also feel like a better version of yourself!!!

    Happy New Me!

I just finished my 3rd Whole30 and plan on doing my next one next January. January is definitely the easiest month to do a Whole30 . The worst month to do a Whole30 is December. I did my first Whole30 in December right after Thanksgiving and my birthday. There are so many more parties and social events in December! This past year, I have maintained a mostly Paleo diet and have kept the many good habits I made after my first Whole30. I posted my most recent results in another thread but decided to update my original success story: On Day 31, I weighed myself and gained three pounds but I was slender to begin with so while I was annoyed, my BMI is still under 21. I weighed myself on Day 32 and the 3 pounds disappeared. The number on the scale affected my mood both days, which is stupid. I am more than number and I am finally ready to permanently break up with the scale! Despite no change in my weight, my stomach is flatter and my waist is smaller. My skin looks amazing!!! I am literally glowing and one of my friends asked me if I had gotten Botox. I have not. Good Food = Good Skin. My cheekbones are more pronounced. My teeth are whiter. I think this is because I am not snacking between meals, didn't drink red wine this month and drank less coffee. I might be hallucinating, but I seem to have less gray hair around my temples. I am 43 years old and I have decided to stop dyeing my hair so this is an added, unexpected bonus. I have better, steadier energy. I am sleeping well every night and waking up easily every morning. My biggest victory this month is really making healthy eating the most important priority for both me and my family. I am making healthier meals for my family and waking up a little earlier to make them good breakfasts & lunches everyday in addition to good dinners. We also talk more about healthy eating and how it makes us feel better than eating junk food. I want my children to successfully learn how to make their own healthy choices by setting a good example and always having healthy food in the house. Congratulations to all the people here who have just finished their Whole30 and good luck to everyone starting this month!!! I hope my story may encourage you on your own journey towards health!!

    Who's starting 1/1?

Hello all! I am on Day 31! I have not reintroduced anything yet, but here are my results: I weighed myself this morning and gained three pounds but I was slender to begin with so while I was slightly annoyed, my BMI is still under 21. (My BMI went from 20.4 to 20.8) I think I am actually going to permanently ditch the scale. I didn't miss it at all and have only weighed myself a few times this past year. I only did a pre-weigh and a post-weigh for the purpose of Whole30. My stomach is flatter and my waist is smaller. My skin looks amazing!!! My cheekbones are more pronounced. My teeth are whiter. I think this is because I am not snacking between meals, didn't drink red wine this month and drank less coffee. I might be hallucinating, but I seem to have less gray hair around my temples. My 10 yer old son told me he had pizza and a soda at a student council meeting and immediately had a stomachache after eating. He said it wasn't worth feeling that way. He asked me to bring healthy food and water when it was his turn to bring in a snack. My 6 year old daughter told me that she asked for a sticker instead of a candy for a prize for behaving well in class. I don't "forbid" them from eating junk food but I never buy it for them. I want them to successfully learn how to make their own healthy choices by setting a good example and always having healthy food in the house.

    Who's starting 1/1?

Yay Day 30!! Congratulations to everyone here!!! I am feeling great and happy to have almost completed the 30 day challenge again. I am planning on reintroducing only a few things: legumes, rice, soy and wine. I am currently reading a book called "The Longevity Plan: Seven Life-Transforming Lessons from Ancient China". I love this book and highly recommend it!! It is written by a cardiologist named Dr. John Day who travels to Bapan village in rural China where people regularly live healthy lives into their 100's. There are many similarities between the Whole30 recommendations and the recommendations Dr. Day gives based on the habits of the centenarians living in Bapan village. The centenarians eat three meals a day consisting of a combination of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, fermented rice, fermented soy & protein (fish, chicken & pork). They walk everywhere and work in fields growing their own vegetables and fruit. They all drink water & tea and some occasionally drink rice wine. They eat no added sugar, no processed food, and no dairy. The only real difference is the rice, legumes, soy and wine, hence why I am planning to reintroduce them to see how they affect me. I am saying goodbye to sugar, wheat & all processed foods. From my last two Whole30s, I know that sugar makes me break out, wheat gives me eczema and processed foods give me a stomach ache. Too much wine gives me a headache but a little wine on occasion is fun. One of the centenarians recommended, "Only put food in your body that will nourish you." That is my reintroduction plan. I wish you all the best in your reintroduction phase!

    Who's starting 1/1?

I add in another tiny meal with protein, fat & carbs right after work because I am pretty hungry after teaching all day. I don't "work out" at a gym but I do walk about 5 miles a day, play with my kids and sometimes do yoga. I usually eat at 7:30 am, 11:30 am, 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm. I also make sure to eat totally delicious meals a few times a week so I look forward to them. Some of my meals are just basic because I don't always have the time to dedicate to making them all super yummy. My favorite meals this past week were 1) chicken curry with coconut milk 2) a salad with cubed chicken, fennel, arugula, & avocado with extra virgin olive oil, lemon & Himalayan pink salt 3) ground beef with roasted acorn squash, roasted walnuts & roasted dates 4) roasted cubed potatoes with kale, sunny side up eggs & hot sauce. The rest of my meals were good but those 4 were super delicious.

Maybe try adding in some probiotics. I eat sauerkraut and drink Kombucha. Whole Foods has a lot of foods with probiotics in them.

    Who's starting 1/1?

I briefly contemplated throwing in the towel at the beginning of my family's weekend trip! My family and I went to Cambria with my husband's cousin and his family and we usually drink wine & beer in the evenings. I thought, "I've already done this twice and I feel great" but then I went to the health food store and bought compliant Kombucha to drink instead. I am glad I decided to keep on going. Cheers to finishing Day 21!

    Who's starting 1/1?

Day 18! I am feeling pretty good, although I still have the final remnants of a UTI. I didn't take antibiotics but instead I am taking probiotic pills to combat UTIs that I picked up from Whole Foods. My skin is looking really good (my number 1 motivation to do Whole30) and a student that I don't know at the private Los Angeles area school where I work asked me if I was an actress. I have been waking up easily every morning at 6:00 am, have steady energy during the day and fall asleep almost immediately at 9:30 pm. I have also been better able to balance my work & home responsibilities. How is everyone else feeling?

@Zesty_ruffles, Don't be discouraged!! You have done so much for your body in the last two weeks!! I bet you will start to feel the extra energy any day now even with that wee bit of cheese in your salad dressing. Just keep on going and if at day 30 you feel you can tack on 2 more weeks for an "official" Whole30, go for it. If not, your body will still thank you for treating it so well. Doing two Whole30s last year + reintroductions retrained how I eat everyday and gave me the "food freedom" to eat well most of the time and once in a while fully enjoy my splurges. The point of this is not to be "perfect" but to establish a healthier set of eating habits to last a lifetime.

    Who's starting 1/1?

I haven't had any food dreams lately but on Day 2 I accidentally used dijon mustard with white wine in it and started to lick the spoon I used when I realized it wasn't the compliant mustard I had bought. I ended up spitting out the non-compliant mustard (I felt sort of silly doing it) and cleaned out the jar I was using to make salad dressing. The first time around, I realized that I lick a lot of spoons & taste food frequently when I am cooking. As long as it is compliant it is fine but I have to be mindful when I am cooking non-compliant food for my kids and husband. My husband actually decided to stop eating meat & poultry two months ago!! We have similar veggie heavy diets but I am just buying him healthy frozen vegetarian main dishes so I don't feel like I am a short order cook. Day 13 is done! Congratulations to all of you for getting through the toughest days!! Tiger Blood is here or right around the corner...
  15. I think salted cured black olives are a good substitute for cheese.

    Who's starting 1/1?

Day 11 is done! I have eaten roasted chicken for the last couple of days but that garlic paste I made is so darn good I am not bored yet. I have also had a UTI the last couple of days which has made the mornings annoying. I opted not to take antibiotics and instead have eaten probiotics (fermented sauerkraut & fermented coconut) and unsweetened cranberries. I have also been drinking hot water with a splash of unsweetened cranberry juice throughout the day. The oddest but also weirdly delicious lunch I had was roasted chicken, hot cranberries, & cold sauerkraut drizzled with olive oil. The combo of probiotics & cranberries has been working! Hopefully I will be back to normal by the end of the weekend. Good luck to everyone!!

I think Day 11 on a Friday night is definitely the equivalent to a mid point of a marathon. Day 11 & 12 were definitely the hardest days the first time around. When I did a Whole30 last year I started feeling extra energy around Day 15. This past year I have eaten pretty well at home and when I ate out I chose whatever sounded good (sometimes healthy, sometimes not). I pretty much followed the Food Freedom rules and if I deemed whatever I wanted (usually wine, chocolate, street tacos, Thai food or Korean BBQ) was worth it, I enjoyed it. This time around I had my junk food dreams right away and felt the Tiger Blood by Day 5. I think the most important aspect of Whole30 is the reintroduction phase afterwards so you can really see how & what different foods affect you. I found out that wheat was giving eczema for my whole life, sugar makes me break out and too much alcohol zaps my energy & dries out my skin. You definitely don't sound whiny and I am sure a lot of people feel the same way at this point.

I just started using a Fitbit this week and I realized that I walk 5.5 miles on the days I teach 3 high school classes and walk all over campus! I work part-time and only teach 3 classes every other day and one class on the other day. Today I woke up earlier than normal at 5:00 am and had good, steady energy all day. I think I am ready to go to sleep now.

Day 9 is done! I went to dinner with my family to Islands & decided to not to ask a million questions to try to figure out what I could eat there. Instead I just drank water and made a delicious salad at home afterwards with fresh arugula from my garden, romaine lettuce, raw fennel, compliant bacon bits (leftovers from breakfast), vinaigrette, & chicken breast with this yummy homemade Lebanese garlic paste (think Zankou chicken): https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2018/01/toum.html I used extra virgen olive oil because I love it but it would probably be really good with avocado oil or a light olive oil. @alexandrarown, Stay strong!! Have a sweet potato or some other compliant carbs. I know you can get through the craving!!

    Who's starting 1/1?

Day 7 has gone well so far. It was my first day back to work so I made sure to eat a full breakfast (eggs, coffee, fruit & veggies) and pack a good lunch (ground beef, sweet potato, & a carrot). I didn't eat the catered breakfast and lunch that we always have on the first day back after winter break but I enjoyed not having to stand in line with 100 other employees waiting to get food. I am looking forward to dinner tonight: roasted chicken, onions & butternut squash. Yum!! I had a lot of energy today and am feeling much better than I did over the weekend. On Day 5 I had tummy trouble and slept 10 hours. Cheers to finishing up our first week!!

Great idea! Combining errands with walking is an great way to get the miles in. I am thinking about walking to work and running back home this week. I work 3.5 miles from home and it is completely flat so it would be doable. I am only 3 miles under my goal mileage for this week. I was a little sore after running 3 miles and walking 4.5 miles yesterday but I discovered I am still a runner. Yesterday I had some tummy trouble and slept 10 hours last night but I feel much better today. I hope you all have a good Day 7!

    Who's starting 1/1?

Yes, the same thing happened to me but to a lesser extent two nights ago when I went out to dinner with three of my longtime friends. One of my friends thoughtfully ordered olives so I could have some but I wasn't hungry since I had already eaten dinner at home. Then she said I was going to lose too much weight and be too skinny if I kept following Whole30. I assured her my main goal was not to lose weight but rather to have more energy. I also assured her that I was eating well and I could eat potatoes and squash everyday. That calmed her down. Another one of my friends was recently doing Keto so she was the most supportive but she still kept offering me a bite of everything she ordered. My other friend commented in disbelief at the end of the meal that I had not eaten anything in the 3 hours we were there and apologized to me at the end of the meal. I assured her I was fine and I loved the ambience of the restaurant and spending time with them. I have known this group of friends for thirty years (we met in junior high school) so I know part of it is that my eating choices makes them feel self-conscious about their eating choices. Human beings are super social creatures and we are highly influenced by the people around us. We have more fun when everyone at the table is indulging or in our case we are more motivated when we have a group that is completing Whole30 with us. I think your reactions to your friends were spot on. We can only reassure our friends and family we feel fine and offer information about Whole30 only if they really want to hear it.

Good morning Day 5! The eating part is going well but I am definitely behind in my mileage. I have walked/hiked 15.5 miles so far this year. I am 6.5 miles behind so I am going to go on a run this morning to try to catch up.

    Who's starting 1/1?

I had a food dream two nights ago that I was at a fancy restaurant and taking forever to order. I didn't actually order or eat anything in my dream but I kept rereading the ingredient list for bone broth on the menu. In real life, I went to two restaurants yesterday but didn't eat any restaurant food in either. I went to the first restaurant for lunch with my two kids and a friend and her kid and just ordered coffee. We were in Big Bear so I had a big insulated bag of food from the trip with me. I ate hard boiled eggs, almonds and raw veggies. My friend was slightly embarrassed that I was eating my own food in the restaurant but I didn't care. Then, last night after I ate a good, filling, compliant dinner at home, I went to meet friends at a restaurant at 8:30 pm. They ordered & had cocktails, pizza, olives, bread, salad, dessert and coffee. I told them I already ate, was doing a Whole30 this month and just drank water. We were at the restaurant until 11:30 pm and the only thing I was truly tempted by were the salad and olives. All in all a successful day 4!

I like the idea of running/hiking/walking 2019 miles this year. It breaks down to just under 6 miles a day. I used to be a serious runner and cross country coach. I ran track & cross country in high school and in my 20s and 30s, I ran 3 marathons, several half marathons and many shorter distance races. I had to look up BQ, and realized it meant Boston Qualifying. I came close with a best marathon time of 3:48 when I was 26 years old. Now in my 40s, I hike and walk and occasionally run. I love to hike, so I'd like to join your group to inspire me to hike/walk 6 miles a day. I am on Day 2 and this is my 3rd Whole 30. I only walked 2 miles yesterday, so I have some catching up to do. Thank you for inspiring me and giving me a fun new fitness goal!!
