    4/2/2018 Starting Whole30

WARNING! - take reintroduction Slow & Steady! I made a big mistake today, and now I don't feel so good. =( My women's Bible study just finished reading the book of Esther, so i decided to bring in some Purim-themed food to share. I made Hamantaschen cookies ~ a thin crust of flour/sugar/butter/egg wrapped around a sugary filling (I made apricot). So there's THREE of the re-intro foods: SUGAR, Dairy, and wheat. I thought, "I'll just eat one, then pass out the rest." Well, I found my "food with no brakes" today: Hamantaschen! I've eaten at least 5 cookies; just couldn't stop, they were so yummy! But now I totally regret it. Too much too soon. My throat hurts, I have a headache, and I feel very flighty. Something in there was NOT good for me! I will now retreat back to Day 30 and start the end slowly, in the right order. On a POSITIVE note: my bloodwork is back (except the full lipid profile), and my CRP is only 0.4 ~ very low risk. I've never had that test done before so I don't have numbers to compare, but as to inflammation in my system, it looks like I'm in good shape! I think the Whole30 probably made a difference.

@Kiralyn D, sounds like you need to explore the concept of Food Freedom (new book). I had the book out from the library but had to return it before I read much. It looks helpful though. The point of this adventure is to reverse the role food plays in your life: Now you own IT, rather than it controls you. Please check back in at some point and tell us what you figured out. =) Best of luck!

So here we are on the eve of the Last Day! (right?) I have my annual physical tomorrow, and I'm going to attempt to fast during the day so I can get my blood drawn at the appointment. Otherwise I have to come back Wed morning. We'll see how that goes. I just want to be DONE ~ so I can EAT ALL THE THINGS! I have enough food in the freezer & fridge to use up that I will continue with the plan at least for the week. But with some WINE. I'll come back to this thread to give a full report of my stats once I get the results (even if I'm only reporting to myself). I wish you all the best going forward! And thanks so much for the support!!!

All this encouragement is very helpful! Even the "commiserating". I was just thinking of how PROUD we can be of ourselves come Day 31 if we finish the race. Just like running a marathon (which I will never do - Hate running!), it's hard but good, and we will be better for our accomplishment. As for hormones, thank goodness I'm way past PMS, but hormones still play a part, I think. Whatever it is, I feel a bit better today. I'm just determined to finish so that I can say "I did it!!!!" @KiralynD Let's clink our wine glasses next Wed night!

Five days to go! Or maybe 6. I will have blood work next Tues or Wed, and I can't wait to see the results. I do hope it's good news. After a very good week, when I was feeling like I could do this forever, I'm having a bit of a hard time tonight. Everything in my facebook feed is FOOD! I really want a brownie! I'm also ready to relax with a glass of wine. Guess I'll have to settle for "whine" instead. ;-) On the bright side, I have discovered so many tasty & filling recipes that don't involve grains, sugar, or dairy! I am fairly certain that this Whole30 adventure will change the choices I make for a long time. And I know I'll be better for having done this. Just PLEASE post lots of encouragement for the next few days! We've made it this far ~ we can DO this! Right?!?

As promised, here are a few of my favorite recipes. If you are getting bored with your options, check Pinterest for Whole30 and also just google whole30 recipes. There is SO much out there! Really, I think you could go a whole year making something different every day! https://unboundwellness.com/egg-roll-in-a-bowl/ https://www.mysuburbankitchen.com/paleo-chicken-zucchini-fritters/#simple-recipe http://www.louisianabrideblog.com/2015/07/breakfast-pumpkin-custard.html

I hear ya, @bigmamabird! I was getting seriously bored - almost depressed - with my food choices last week. But I have some really great recipes to share, which I will get to later. Stay tuned! Right now I have a pressing question about Coconut Cream ~ How long does this last in the frig before it goes horribly wrong??? I had some set aside for various dishes, and today I tried to top my breakfast casserole with a dollop of it. It SMELLED fine, as far as I could tell, but OH MY GOODNESS - the TASTE was very rancid! I had to toss my serving. Very sad! I don't seem to be using up the Coconut milk or cream quickly enough to justify opening a can. ANY SUGGESTIONS???

One week down, 3 to go, y'all!!! My first week wasn't so bad, but last night, I wanted wine & crackers SO Badly! My husband & I are retired educators who just sent our baby off to college last fall - so also empty-nesters. Our evenings are usually spent watching Netflix or PBS. We love British mysteries, dramas, & comedies. And of course they feature people drinking beer or wine in every other scene! I used to pour myself a glass to sip along as we watched. But now I have cinnamon tea. Still not adjusting well to that change. It's just a habit that I savor and miss. On the up-side, I made THE most delicious dish today for lunch: Eggroll-in-a-bowl: https://unboundwellness.com/egg-roll-in-a-bowl/ Hope I'm allowed to share the recipe. I highly recommend it! I used ground turkey because I couldn't find ground pork, but it was wonderful. Enjoy!

I'm brand new here and also on my first Whole30 journey. I started April 2. Was looking for some support & encouragement, and it looks like maybe I've found it here! Felt crummy this morning and was contemplating being a quitter, but I think I'll stick with it and follow along with you all. =) My main goal is to get high cholesterol under control without medication. I'm 59, relatively fit, not overweight, and I follow a "good" diet, but I know I need to do much better. My cholesterol has been creeping up since my late 40's. Last time it was 399. Don't faint! I'm not worried about it. HDL & Tris are both fine; it's just the LDL out of whack, and I don't tolerate statins, so I won't go that route. I really believe that reducing (eliminating on whole 30) sugars & grains will make a difference. Haven't been able to force myself to do that before. I hope you all are feeling well today! Less than a month to go!!! ;-)
