urgh...so I'm out of food again, and my lack of ability/competence with menu planning will be my personal challenge this week.  I did some paid work recently, so I am thankfully able to get Some food, not sure how much, but Some.  which is better than none.  school ended yesterday, though, and my teen, who is eligible for free breakfast and lunch at school (crap that it is, it's a Huge help) is now eating at home all day, and I'm needing to adjust for that.  I can do this - we're almost halfway there - I HAVE to do this!!!

That one recipe I didn’t get done ahead yesterday but was making fresh tonight?  Daaaaaang guys, it rocked.  I haven’t done anything with dates in a sauce before, but there are some sauces that do need a tad of sweet.  Even so, I think I would mix this one in more rarely than the DAILY I was thinking at first bite.  I might also do half the dates and see if it really needed them for my tastes.  What I do love is that it’s a great way to get some broccoli in.  I like broccoli, but let’s all admit there was a reason Melissa used it in her famous “if you are hungry enough for boiled fish and broccoli” example.
Anyway this recipe was on the W30 Instagram feed last week and it just shot up to my top 10 list.

Today I was riding to the store with my Mom and she unwrapped a lifesaver...the crinkle of the wrapper make me like Pavlov’s dog! Mouth salivating like crazy!
Aside from that I feel like it’s been going pretty well. Had carrots and asked my mom if these were a different kind of carrot...they tasted so sweet! She said they tasted like normal carrots so it must be my tastebuds adjusting. I call that a nsv!

What are you having for fat in these meals? You should be adding one or two of the fat choices listed on the meal template in addition to what you're cooking in. Fat is what will really help keep you satisfied from meal to meal and help combat cravings.
You can download the meal template here if you need to review it:  https://whole30.com/downloads/whole30-meal-planning.pdf

I'm excited we are one week in! I've been thinking so much about sweets... it's been hard. Still sticking to the plan though! Also starting to think about how to come out of this thing... I'm thinking I'll add dairy back since I never really had a problem with dairy that I know of so it'll be interesting to see how I feel with it.
Going to make the Chicken Pad Thai that was posted on the whole 30 facebook today for lunch tomorrow. I'll let you all know how it is!

Day 7!  Anyone else feeling weepy and just out of sorts?  I'm eating well, trying to sleep well but today I'm just off.  I was feeling better earlier this week and it's almost like the hangover came late.

Today was my most challenging day to date. We had people over and I really wanted to be able to eat what they were having. But I persevered.
They say the second Whole 30 is harder than the first, and so far I’m finding that to be true. I don’t remember the last one being this hard.

foods that I have not eaten in my 49 years of life that I ate this week:  mayonnaise, spaghetti squash, roasted red pepper sauce/mayo, green cabbage slaw, steamed spinach (eww, never again!  I prefer it raw), butternut squash, and 'carnitas' - I made mine with chicken.  all homemade, all yummy (except the spinach).  I mixed flavors I would never have thought to mix (protein salad with ground turkey, roasted red pepper mayo, apple cider vinegar, salt, pepper, celery, onion, grapes, slivered almonds, & nutritional yeast inside a bell pepper?!), and cooked involved recipes with multiple steps, various pots, and differing cooking times on both the stove AND in the oven - some for long hours.  my teen also ate some of these things with me, and discovered that while he wasn't fond of the butternut squash, the roasted red pepper mayo, or the slaw, the carnitas he put between two pieces of whole wheat bread layered with romaine was "the best f^<%ing sandwich he'd ever eaten" (I did ask him to check his language, though I accepted it as a compliment, nonetheless).  I also zested a lemon!
after tonight's dinner, only three more weeks and 69 meals to go!  mom's coming up next weekend (for the teen's 8th grade graduation), so we'll see how that goes.  I'm looking forward to feeling better and better, and measuring my end result in terms of my doctor's recent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes against another round of bloodwork.

Ya’ll I almost blew it. I poured out some Alexia sweet potato fries on a sheet to bake thinking these will be good with eggs in the morning...then thought I’ve got to check the ingredients just to be sure. Sugar! In sweet potato fries? WTH?!  Also learned that my turkey burgers have sugar. Dammit!

Lightening fast update bc I have a workout to get in but one tip I always found interesting for people who were used to a hot cereal breakfast is to try subbing in a cup of creamy type soup.  Obviously “creamy” can be sort of hard to achieve with no dairy but getting creative with a sweet potato based soup or something with some coconut cream might help fill the void in a way that eggs don’t and soups have that great portability factor.  And they are a perfect vehicle for veggies.
Actually I started to type veghicle....which cracked me up more than it should have.

Hi guys! Sounds like everyone is doing mostly ok with the exception of @LIEvans lololol
I don't know why I decided yesterday would be a good day to donate platelets for the first time in two years. For one I was hungry at the appointment (4:30) and couldn't partake in all of their yummy snacks (m&ms, chips, crackers, soda). I got through it with my bottle of water and proceeded to feel yucky the rest of the night. Glad I woke up feeling better today. Had a work meeting and luckily they had hard boiled eggs and fruit. Kind of an unnecessary snack but it felt needed in a social environment... has anyone else run into that? Well the extra egg on top of my morning 3 eggs has made me bloated as hell so lesson learned that it wasn't needed!
Hope you all are hanging in there, we are almost through with our first week!

I started on June 2nd, so I'm one day behind all of you. This is my first time and I'm taking it very seriously. I started a spreadsheet where I do all my meal planning and reporting similar to the Whole30 Day by Day book. It feels really good to have one place to keep all my thoughts organized, and check off as the day goes on. One thing that has been interesting to me is the concept of your amount of suck is directly related to the amount of junk you consumed before starting. I've been kind of 50% Whole30 leading up to this, so I haven't had any hangover symptoms! Hope ya'll don't mind if I tag along for the ride.

Day 4 yall! I had a headache all day yesterday despite drinking what felt like gallons and gallons of water. I had the worst charlie horse Saturday night, it was actually sore all day yesterday! It's amazing to me how quickly you can feel changes in your body. My ankles have been swollen for at least the last two months and last night I realized that even after being on my feet all day they weren't swollen at all. The cooking all the time though... it's a struggle! SO. MANY. DISHES.

woo hoo!  I've been pretty sore and sleepy, myself, but my itchy patches on my elbows feel smooth, the ones on my knee and ankle seem to be clearing up, and I'm hoping to see some improvement on my toes!  talk to me about cooking all the time and dishes!!!  my sink just keeps filling up, it's CRAZY!

Relieved to know I’m not the only one feeling tired and sluggish today! I did some housework today which pushed lunch a bit later than I would have liked. Afterwards I was having such a craving for sweets!! I have resisted and am enjoying a coffee to pick me up (a habit I am also hoping to kick before the end of the 30 days).
@Crimsann thanks for posting the meatball recipe - it looks delicious and I can’t wait to try it!
@KCore1 sorry to hear you’re not feeling great - it won’t last forever and the Tiger Blood is just on the other side (at least that’s what I keep telling myself). Hope you are feeling better soon.
I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend!!

Hi all! Day two! I feel lighter already...is that a thing?  Trying to add some foods in that I haven’t had for a while to make this seem like a treat at times. Went to Whole Foods and remembered why it’s nicknamed Whole Paycheck! Feeling pretty sweaty today and wondering if it’s the lack of sugar or just the North Carolina heat. I’ve checked my thermostat three times and it swears it’s only 70 in here! Hope you all are doing well this first weekend!

One quick one...this is my absolute favorite W30 recipe.
    http://meljoulwan.com/2014/03/17/chicken-pesto-meatballs-marina/
I have always made these with turkey instead of chicken but Mel's magic meatball method (she should patent that) makes them incredibly moist so either chicken or turkey works without being dry.  As a short cut, I have sometimes used a bottled pasta sauce instead of making her sauce.  Her recipe is easy and tasty, but sometimes I need all the short cut's I can get.  My favorite is Paul Newman's For the Common Good which has been easy to find even in major grocery chains so it doesn't require a specialty health food stop.  Always double check because recipes change, but the last time I looked the Tomato Basil variety was compliant.  If you have never tried zoodles, this is an excellent way to try them the first time because they taste delicious with this recipe. On top of all that the leftover meatballs are killer cold so it's a total win.

Hi all! Go us for starting today! I attempted the whole 30 about five years ago and made it through 24 days... so my goal is to make it through all 30 this time. I also hope that the good habits stick this time as over time I slid back to my junk food loving ways. Good luck to you all and share good recipes!

hey all!  I did some prep yesterday - made mayonnaise, coconut cream, ranch dressing, and tomato sauce - so I would have what I needed to succeed today.  I'm using the 7-day meal plan in the book as a guide, so for breakfast this morning I had a frittata with red onion, tomato, and spinach with a side of grapes and almonds.  it was DELICIOUS!  and I usually don't bother with breakfast, so I'm doing great so far, lol!  lunch will be a protein salad with a side of fruit, and dinner will have to be cooked early and brought along because my teen has a gig tonight, and there's always lots of junk there, which I Will Not Touch!

My first round, I was a bit concerned with the cost too, but what I've found is that simple is best - buying whatever greens/veggies are in season, pairing with chicken or eggs is a quick and simple meal that can be affordable. Also, when I'm on W30, I eat out a lot less - not stopping for coffee each morning, not grabbing a cookie or snack at 3pm, and not ordering pizza or other foods on the weekend - this ends up being a bigger cost savings for us that outweighs any additional cost from the additional grocery bills.  Good luck!
