Excellent! Now could you please start harassing Chipotle? They need to clean up their act. They could so easily be Whole30 compliant.

Thank you both!! I kind of figured it would be off limits for an official Whole30. In the meantime, though, it’s been a nice substitute for pasta made with grains, which currently give me hives.

@ladyshanny Thanks, I do too! I still feel pretty full/bloated this morning. I couldn’t fathom eating a normal breakfast, so I have an apple cut up and an RxBar by my desk in case I feel like nibbling. I’ve also had some hives already this morning, and I feel like I could sleep the day away. It’s not a huge surprise that I’m reacting to gluten, but dang - I’m not a fan. Luckily, I’m planning on taking the day off of work tomorrow to burn up some PTO before the end of the year, so if I’m still feeling cruddy I can just rest. Regardless, I think I have some good information to take back to my doctor.

@sunshine9185 I had a glass of red wine tonight as well (after a dinner of butternut squash soup and almond-crusted chicken breast). No reactions yet except for the rosy cheeks I usually get when I drink wine. I didn’t hand out candy this year; we recently moved to a new neighborhood that is a bit outside of town, and there aren’t many kiddos around. So it we me and the kitties we just adopted a couple weeks ago, a glass of red, and Hocus Pocus.

I meant tonpost this earlier in the week and must not have clicked Submit.
I’m still here as well and still going strong. Can you believe the 30 days will be over after next Tuesday?! Up until Tuesday night, my hives had practically disappeared, or at least diminished enough to not agonize about them through the day. Also, generally speaking, my clothes are fitting better, my energy is sustained throughout the day, and I’m sleeping great.
I seem to have a flare up of some kind with my hives since Wednesday. I have also been lacking serious energy even though I’m sleeping great. I had some vertigo yesterday and some brain fog. My digestion is off and my abdomen feels a bit distended. I’m not sure if this is just a fluke, a delayed immune response from something pre-Whole30, or if there was some unknown cross-contamination with any of my meals. I also bought a can of coconut milk that has some guar gum in it. I know it’s compliant, but I’m wondering if I’m maybe reacting to that? It’s hard to tell what’s going on exactly.
I seem to be about a week behind the norm as far as the “typical” Whole30 stuff (i.e. the food dreams). I had my first one Tuesday night and it involved me mindlessly eating a lemon bar before realizing I was 3/4 of my way into a whole30 and that I’d have to start over.
I’m excited and nervous about my reintroduction. And I’m really curious to see if any of the foods exacerbate my hives. I’m also hoping I’m feeling better soon; I was really hoping to finish strong this month and not feel like crap like I have the last couple days.

Hopefully everyone is still doing well.  It's been a bit quiet on this thread so either people are finding it easier or have given up. Hopefully it's the former versus the latter!  I did a lot of meal prep yesterday and got a great haul from the farmer's market Saturday.  Should keep me less bored this week with some wonderful new options.  I was able to conquer a hill on my bike yesterday (TWICE) that I could only get halfway up even a week and a half ago so I think I've found my tiger's blood.
I know I continue to lose weight because people keep making comments so that's another plus.  My sleep has been amazing again this whole30 just like the last one and my energy level is just so steady.  That's one of my favorite things about whole30.  I also really do notice when I have a carb for a workout and how it boosts my energy.  Before food was food and I never really noticed a difference between foods because it was all so bad.  But I've done a sweet potato with cashew butter and also dried blueberries before my last two bike sessions and I could tell I had more energy to get through.

LOL - I don't know if I'm cold hearted, but I don't give candy anymore on Halloween. I do little toys - I get a big batch from Amazon - rubber spiders, glow rings, bouncy balls and the like. We participate in the Teal Pumpkin project where I live, so it's cool not to give the candy out anymore. The kiddos get excited to pick their "trick" from the bowl. Last year my last day of my W30 was Halloween, so I was reallllly grateful not to have to deal with the sugar treats

Oh two other things to note (hacks if you will)
If you only get Guac, Lettuce and Carnitas make sure they ring you up for a "Triple Play" it makes the guacamole basically "free"  If you have 3 items or less in your bowl it's a triple play which I believe they charge $4.99 for.  The guac Is $2.30 or whatever and so your meal is under $8! This is another reason I don't get salsa.
Second, ask for a BOWL not a salad.  If you ask for a Salad they put lettuce in first then carnitas.  If you ask for a bowl they'll put carnitas in first.  Why does this matter you may ask?  Because human nature often takes over and the employees put more carnitas in to fill the bowl. This results in you sometimes getting almost a double meat portion without paying extra!  Then add your guac and lettuce at the end.

Thanks for all the great ideas/reminders!! I don’t like olives, and I struggle a bit with avocado...although I’m finding that I like it better seasoned and mashed/mixed in with other ingredients.
All of the pestos, chimichuri, homemade dressings are all things we do already at home when we cook. Thanks for the great reminders on the sauces, etc...gotta remember to keep it simple! This is my first Whole30, and while I’m fairly confident in the kitchen, it’s been easy to allow myself to over complicate things a bit.

There's the obvious -- sliced avocado with lime juice and salt, or a handful of olives, or occasionally a handful of nuts -- any of those work well alongside lots of meals.
There are all kinds of sauces that you can make. I'd start with mayo (I like this method if you have an immersion blender:  https://thehealthyfoodie.com/fail-proof-home-made-paleo-mayo-whole30-compliant/). Mayo can be used as is to dip raw or cooked vegetables or meat in, it can be mixed with herbs to make a salad dressing/dip, it can be used to coat chicken or fish before cooking (like this: http://www.janssushibar.com/worlds-moistest-chicken/, although I think sriracha is not compliant so you'd want to sub hot sauce or something else, or leave it out).  Pesto is easy, I just made a batch of that this week -- this page has three or four variations on that:   https://meljoulwan.com/2009/08/05/presto-pesto/.  You can put it over zoodles or spaghetti squash, or on some steak or chicken, or mix it with mayo to make a really great salad dressing/dip. Chimichurri is another easy one:  https://meljoulwan.com/2014/07/02/chimichurri-aka-magic-sauce/ -- use it in much the same way you'd use the pesto. Sunshine Sauce is another good option:  https://meljoulwan.com/2009/07/21/sunshine-sauce/ -- I like to make these meatballs (except I cook the sweet potatoes first, I didn't like the chunks of them in mine): https://nomnompaleo.com/post/39832097367/whole30-day-6-asian-meatballs and dip them in the sunshine sauce.  Basically, any sauce or dip where the most prominent ingredient is oil or nut butter or mayo is going to add a good amount of fat to your food. It's also a great way to be able to batch cook, and then have different flavors all week -- make a bunch of chicken with really simple seasonings like salt, pepper, and garlic, and just change the sauce you serve over it each day.
You can also make soups with coconut milk, add a few nuts to a salad, mix a spoonful of almond butter or sunbutter into a stirfry, put a dollop of ghee or some oil on a baked potato or sweet potato.

Happy halfway everyone!! I’m super tired today, but I think it’s because I was traveling over the weekend. I stayed in some cabins at a lake in Minnesota with all the ladies on my mom’s side of the family. I didn’t get the greatest sleep, so I think that has caught up with me today. The tiredness (and colder weather here in WI) is also testing my patience with cravings today (specifically hot chocolate, and mac and cheese).
In the bright side, I had no issues preparing all of my meals ahead of time for the weekend, and I resisted the temptation of all the non-compliant snacks at girls weekend. I got a lot of questions from my aunts and cousins, so it was nice to feel their support and curiousity about the program.
Also, there was a marked improvement in my hives last week, even from Monday to Friday. I haven’t had to take any anti-histamines since Wednesday 10/3. My hives are still present throughout the day but are definitely decreasing in frequency, duration, and severity.  They were a tad bit worse over the weekend, but the air is starting to get more dry here in the upper Midwest, and changes in my normal routine could have had an effect too.
Last week my energy started to remain at a constant throughout the day, and any abdominal bloating I experienced before has disappeared. One thing I think I’m struggling with is getting enough fat in my meals because I tend to get hungry again about 2-3 hours after eating.
How are others doing as of Day 15? And does anyone have any favorite ways to incorporate your healthy fats into your meals?

Day 4 Check-in: Nothing too crazy happening, still feeling pretty good! I had a co-worker tell me that I sounded a LOT better (nasal congestion wise)
Breakfast as usual: Baked sweet potato pan fried in olive oil, sprinkled with Paprika, Onion and Garlic powder and two poached eggs
    Lunch: Loaded Cauli soup
By about 1:30 I was starving, so I had some leftover Venison with Whole30 BBQ sauce and a Dasani Sparkling Berry.
Flying to Milwaukee for a day trip, the plane trip might be rough (I normally have a glass of wine, but will get sparkling water instead).
Sis is taking me and the bf out tomorrow night! I told her about my Whole30 and she is totally on board for finding a great restaurant to accommodate :-)

Hi everyone! Day 4 of my first Whole30. My first few days were pretty good, although I was kind of sleepy the last two days. I didn’t sleep very well last night, and I have a bit of a headache and not as much of an appetite so far. I’m sure some of that is from the poor sleep.
I’m doing the Whole30 because I have been dealing with chronic hives since March of this year. My doctor and I have suspicions that it may be related to leaky gut and/or food sensitivities, so we thought it would be worthwhile for me to try an elimination diet. The Whole30 looked like a good place to start. I’m trying my best to not take any antihistamines so I can monitor the frequency/severity of my hives throughout the month. Coloring has been a great distraction so far to keep myself from itching. I’m curious to see what comes of this month and especially with the reintroduction.
