Yes, this past week crawled by...BUT - we did it!!! Last day of whole30, and we made it!
I've been talking up the advantages and results of W30 to people who show interest - for instance,  to a couple who are just starting their W30 month on Friday. I happened to meet them at the natural food store in town, got talking about W30 and explained my and my husband's experiences. It is a great way to learn how our bodies respond to various foods.

Holy cow ladies and gentlemen - it is day 30!!! I feel like the first part of the month went pretty quickly but this last week felt like FOREVER!
My NSV: my relationship with food is back on track, much less brain fog, not craving sweets, clothes fit better, stomach is flatter, less bloated and less tummy pains, not snacky during the day, spent hardly any money on eating out, I think I have more energy (but any tiger blood is being immediately sucked up by my almost 1-yr-old DS).
Disappointments: the dermatitis on my face that I thought was clearing up did not, my daily muscle pains and dull headaches are still here (I was hoping it was due to inflammation from sugar but now realize it’s from years of bad posture, sports and accidents. Guess I’m going to have to get regular massages... dang. :) )
I’ve never done a correct food reintroduction after any of my previous Whole30s, so I am going to really try this time. I know something is causing my stomach to feel like there are rocks in my gut and I need to see what it is.

I'm still here! Although today was a day of cravings - reallllly wanted cheese, and sweet tea... I was strong and didn't cave...so, that's good. Although I know I have lost weight, today was one of those "I feel fatter than before W30" - brain is acting whacked.  And frankly, getting a little tired of having to come up with dinner every night, making sure there are lunch choices....I want a chocolate protein shake. I feel like a petulant bratty kid.
I keep hoping for the tiger blood -  I have some projects here at the house that I want to delve into, but due to the weather causing school early dismissals and delayed openings, my days are discombobulated! I pray that this flagging enthusiasm gets recharged...
Husband is still doing well with his numbers - it was 110 Sunday night! Interestingly, his morning #s Monday were 134...he says that his body will make sugar if his #s crash during the night...didn't know  our bodies could do such things!  He is very pleased with these changes.
Tomorrow is the "last day"...congrats to one and all who managed to  complete this month. I hope we all have great reports and changes from this Whole30. God bless you all!

I had a definite nsv yesterday. I usually wear larger, loose shirts (to hide the rolls)...I took out a shirt that usually makes me look like a stuffed sausage. Well, I put it on and it was slightly loose - and when I looked in the mirror, I didn't resemble a (terribly) lumpy kielbasa! I'll take it!
Although, to be honest, I can't WAIT to step on that scale next week...but another part of me is a bit nervous...
I made homemade ketchup yesterday, using dates instead of sugar or honey. I canned it this morning, and all the jars took! I wish I could can the homemade mayo, so I don't have to make it every week.  We are saving money, so I can't complain. As a school bus driver, I have a nice 3+ hours at home between my runs, so I'm able to do prep work for our meals.
How am I feeling? Well, very happy that hubby's #s (diabetes) are excellent - for instance, last night was 126...which is quite low for him post dinner. I am excited that my weight appears to be heading in the right direction. Does anyone else daydream about being able to do more, have more energy, looking better...? I do - however, I have to be careful that I ground those dreams in reality, so I avoid disappointment.
Okay, back to work. Hope everyone has a great 25th day...!

Started Day 18 with a BAS (aka Big Ass Salad) - Over a bed of shredded romaine lettuce, there was a pile of sauteed pulled pork, a sliced avocado, roasted tomato and pepper salsa, and my version of croutons - two fried eggs! Delicious and very filling. It was a late breakfast, so in lieu of lunch, I had a banana with a spoonful of my homemade sunbutter. Dinner tonight - surf n turf - venison steaks and sauteed sea scallops, with sauteed kale on the side. Now I am off to work for a few hours. Have a great day, everyone!

    @Zesty_ruffles,
Don't be discouraged!!  You have done so much for your body in the last two weeks!!  I bet you will start to feel the extra energy any day now even with that wee bit of cheese in your salad dressing.  Just keep on going and if at day 30 you feel you can tack on 2 more weeks for an "official" Whole30, go for it.  If not, your body will still thank you for treating it so well.  Doing two Whole30s last year + reintroductions retrained how I eat everyday and gave me the "food freedom" to eat well most of the time and once in a while fully enjoy my splurges.  The point of this is not to be "perfect" but to establish a healthier set of eating habits to last a lifetime.

Day 8 - won and done. A good day, had a BAS for lunch _and_ dinner...added chicken to the evening bowl. Mario and I turned 3# ground beef, 3/4# sugar free bacon, eggs, finely chopped 'shrooms and onions into two large pans of baked meatballs! Teamwork! He needs easy & quick breakfasts, so this will get him going in the wee hours.  I used the NomNomPaleo recipe for Big-O Bacon burgers, added  3 eggs, and the meatballs came out great.
Mario goes to see his diabetes doctor on Monday- curious to see what comes of it. His numbers have been very good - he's only needed insulin twice this week! Hooo-RAH!  Praying hard that these changes lead to (dare I say it???) complete elimination of meds... Time will tell.

Okay, HawkeyeE was looking for the recipe for Bacon/chicken liver pate - here you go! I did not add the mushrooms. I put the finished product in a glass bowl, smoothed the top, and poured melted duck fat over to seal. Ghee would also work very well for that.
Liver Pâté with Mushroom and Bacon
    Ingredients
3 slices bacon, cut into 3-4 pieces each
        1 medium onion, chopped
        3 cloves garlic, crushed
        1 lb chicken livers
        1 c sliced mushrooms (optional)
¼ c. broth for simmering (bone broth)
2 tbsp freshly chopped thyme (or 1 teas dried)
        1 bay leaf
¼ to ½ tsp. of salt
        2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
    Instructions
Pan fry the bacon for 2-3 minutes.  Add onion and sauté for about 5 minutes more until onion is soft.  Add the garlic and chicken livers, and sauté until the liver is no longer pink.  Add the mushrooms, broth, thyme, bay leaf, and salt.   Allow all of that to simmer for 15 minutes uncovered.
Remove mixture from the pan. Discard the bay leaf.  Add fresh parsley and purée with an immersion blender or food processor. Refrigerate or freeze individual portions.

Kelly Voss you are marrying the right mother in law!  What a treat to have someone else cook a compliant meal for you. The woman is a saint.
Starting day 8 here in New Zealand. So far so good. Mornings are headachey. I suspect that is due to a bit of dehydration over night. I’m not sleeping particularly well, but that has been normal for me over the last 20 years (I’ll turn 60 in March). The cause is also normal, hot flushes. Their duration is, however not normal. Usually they pass after about half an hour. These are quite persistent. I’m also getting them during the day (not the norm).   Hope this is a side affect of sugar withdrawal.
On the very up side I have a very happy (though blissfully non-compliant) husband. He loves the food, but most of all he loves my doing all of the cooking. Last night he had a mint chocolate after dinner. Later I had my first food dream. I’d accidentally eaten a mint chocolate (how does one “accidentally “ eat chocolate?). I distinctly remember the taste. My only thought was “ Welcome to Day 1: round two”.

Day 7 is in the Bag! Tasted my bacon/chicken liver pate, and it came out really good - had it with sliced apple (my jicama had frozen in the fridge - ?!? Had to toss it). We had the meat sauce (again) for supper tonight, but over baked sweet potatoes instead of zoodles. Dear hubby is downstairs right now, cooking chicken sausage (Aldi's - chicken spinach) for his lunch - he has been very patient and good about sticking with the plan. He brings hard boiled eggs, celery with sunflower butter, avocado with salsa, and whatever his 'main dish' is - today was the meat sauce, tomorrow is the sausage in lettuce wraps. I suggested he bring an apple or a couple small oranges too. He usually has a banana with his breakfast - it helps with the occasional leg cramps from the insulin  - potassium is a diabetic's friend. The man is a lifelong carpenter, and is very active on a daily basis for work, so he needs 'snacks' to keep his blood sugar on an even keel.
I had a late "breakfast" - leftover chicken in (compliant) gravy.  I didn't get to eat anything other than a banana  until almost noon. Interestingly, I found myself feeling drowsy! Tryptophan  effect, anyone? I grabbed a couple clementine oranges and some nuts/seeds, and headed out into the ice cold winter air  - BRRRRR!!!! - woke me right up!
Tomorrow night will be B.A.S. night (Big A** Salad) - a variety of greens, tomatoes, meats, toasted punkin seeds, and mushrooms, served in quite large bowls. I really  like the W30 caesar dressing, and Mario (hubby) was pleasantly surprised to find that the W30 ranch was excellent - despite lacking dairy and sugar. I do a lot of homemade sides, condiments and main dishes - finding foods in the grocery that we can actually eat on this plan is almost impossible.

Day 7, woop woop! One whole week of Whole30 is just about in the bag. This past weekend was great. My fiancé's mother was super sweet and invited us over for a Whole30 dinner she made last night! I was dying, it was so wonderful - she went out of her way to make sure everything was 100% compliant, down to the ghee and the seasoning on the grilled salmon. There were roasted carrots with dill, a mango salsa, vinegar coleslaw... I was in heaven. So so good, and I think we all felt great about eating a healthy AND delicious meal together.
Also found a Whole Foods near us (we just moved to the area last year) and left with compliant turkey bacon and Primal Kitchen mayo. So I was one happy camper. Plus the Tessamae's ketchup I ordered arrived and I spent a blissful lunch eating actual ketchup on my leftover turkey burger. Side effects-wise, I haven't really had any weird Whole30 related dreams but my other half did! He literally dreamed I was stuffing my face with cupcakes and blaming him for not stopping me. Bahaha. Clearly I may be imparting some mild anxieties to him about this without realizing it. He has been eating everything I make and really he's only on his own for lunches, so it's entirely possible that he's getting some of the benefits of this way of eating even though he's not doing it 100%. Weird dreams and all. Personally, I hope he benefits from this just as much as me because we both have physical and mental health goals we want to achieve this year.
Sounds like we're all going strong, let's make week 2 awesome!

I made it through days 4-6 during unexpected travel and some interesting social situations. A ticket became available for the Bears game in Chicago (I live in Texas, though am from Illinois) on Thursday, so on a whim I bought a plane ticket and went to Chicago for the game. I had dinner out with friends, went to a tailgate, and to a mid-afternoon game in an NFL stadium and did not slip up once! I am so proud of myself. It did help that my brother's girlfriend had done a Whole30 previously and she was happy to assist me in remaining compliant by cooking compliant food and having her house stocked.
My only symptoms thus far have been very minor headaches, sleep disruptions (though I was not a good sleeper to begin with), and I am hot. Like, really really hot. Like, have to change my shirt in the middle of the day hot. Is this normal?!?! I have never been a big meat-eater, and protein has always been the "nutrient" of which I get the least, so I am wondering if that has to do with it. Anyone have any ideas? I am 36, do not appear to have any other menopause or pre-menopause symptoms. This is literally the only negative physiological change I have had with Whole30. I have some NSVs like less bloating and more mid-day energy, so that is what is keeping me going. I would love to hear what y'all think.
Great job to everyone else out there who is on Day 7 and is still going strong!

Good morning! I popped in yesterday to see how ya'll were doing, but didn't post. It was a good day, a busy one : spent the rainy day prepping. We are using NomNomPaleo's books, as well as W30 recipes online. I made the Magic Mushroom powder, a bacon and chicken liver pate, a double batch of mayo (1/3 regular, 2/3 roasted garlic), a double batch of kale "chips" using the above-mentioned MMPowder, Big-O BaconBurgers for dinner (O.M.G.!), and started a crock pot of the Sunday Sauce. It felt like we ate all day...tasting this, munching that...but hubby's numbers were phenomenal! And I am feeling pretty darn good - cramps and bloating are gone, clear headed, no headaches... We both are really getting into creating incredibly delicious food - and eating it! I feel as if I eat a lot more salt than I used to, but no bloating or other signs of water retention. After yesterday's work, today we are out of here, going for a ride -  and packing a good lunch. Enjoy your Sunday!

A glorious and sunshiney good morning to one and all!
Well...that was a bit over the top...
I took melatonin last night, and managed a straight 5 hours before waking...was able to fall back asleep for the few hours before my alarm went off. The achy/bloated feelings are subsiding - not completely gone, but better. I noticed a mental sharpness this morning that tells me I was probably 'fog-bound' these last several days (or self-involved in my pity party, lol!). The puffiness in my face has gone down a wee bit...it took great restraint NOT to step on the scale.
Will be making mayo and chicken liver pate tomorrow (or maybe tonight). The pate will look wonderful shmeared across a slab of jicama or 3...and taste even better. Found a recipe that uses bacon and duck fat - might be able to entice hubby to try it (bacon is the bomb, in his world).
Oh! Speaking of bacon, got my shipment of sugar free bacon from US Wellness Meats.  Expensive, but the quality is outstanding!
This morning's breakfast was chicken salad rolled up in slices of turkey, alongside a hard-boiled egg - not traditional, but fast, easy and yummy.
Oh, for those who are using NomNomPaleo cookbooks - I used her recipe for cooking chicken breasts, and found a delicious bonus. When the breasts have finished cooking and cooled enough to handle, peel off the skin. Cut the skin into 2" chunks, lay crunchy side down on a foil-lined pan, and cook in a toaster oven at 350-400*F until browned and crispy. Salt and enjoy! My better half wants me to make chicken breasts every week, just for the "chips"...lol
Okay, I hope you all have a great day - and good luck on our first weekend on Whole30...we can DO this!

Hello ladies! I started Jan 1 as well..This is my 5 or 6 time through, but the 1st I've done in over a year. Last year was a bit of an emotional roller coaster. I had a baby, (viktoriya my LO is 10 mos) lost a a beloved dog of 9 years unexpectedly, lost my mother, moved (and my mother and father in law have moved in with us in the mother-in-law suite in the basement) and have had some health concerns with my father-in-law and my father. My husband recently had a promotion at work which is great, except it has meant a lot of long hours and weekend work...which is not great.
I am doing another round of Whole30 to re-establish a good relationship with food. This past year I have pretty much been eating what is in front of me, partially bc I didn't make the time to cook healthy meals, and partially because when I was given a chance to eat, shower or sleep, I most always chose sleep (thus continuing the cycle of not eating well). In Sept I started developing Atopic dermatitis on my face, which I had experienced one other time but was able to take antibiotics to clear up. This time I haven't had that choice due to the fact that I am still breast feeding the LO. Needless to say, I have been on 3 separate creams and the areas are just NOW starting to clear up after 5 full days of being on Whole30. I had my suspicions that the dermatitis could be food related, but this will either confirm or dispel my theory. I started out eating sugary treats once in a while..and then it turned into "Oh, well, I'll just have this treat today and eat better tomorrow." Tomorrow started turning into next week, next week to next month...
As someone who has been an anorexic twice, it is extremely important that when I get this lax in my relationship with food, it is only a matter of time before I start going down the dark path leading back to a very very bad place.
So I am back! Welcome to all of you newbies - there will definitely be difficult days but the physical and mental rewards are amazing!
  18. Thanks

My husband and I began our W30 adventure today. He was a little dubious about going on a "diet" - but with my 2 Nom-Nom Paleo books, the internet and a desire to load our meals with flavor, this first day wasn't so bad. I have always been a grazer, so keeping this to three meals a day is challenging. Dear hubby is a diabetic, and I am hoping this W30 will lead to depleting the need for meds for him. He's testing right now...first day, dinner was 3 hours ago, and the # is....155! Excellent#, no need for a shot tonight. He is a happy man. We spent the day prepping, so, Lord willing, this will be the beginning of a great relationship....with food!

I cooked FISH! and ate it, too!
It's probably the first time I've eaten any fish in the last 20 years, at the very least. The good news is that it didn't smell fishy at all, from the moment I opened the little seal-packs to the moment I put it in my mouth. Because of that lack of fishy smell and a mild flavor, I was able to actually enjoy eating it. I used very thin flounder fillets that I'd found in LIDL's frozen section, and the recipe was extremely simple - just put fish on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper, rub oil on the fish, use microplane to zest grapefruit directly onto the fish (I was probably a little overzealous with the zest, and also rubbed it in slightly), then salt it and bake at 350F for 12-16 minutes (until flaky). We had it with a side salad, which I loaded up with citrus fruits, and some zucchini.
    Here's to trying new things

    Day 4 and good morning
Last night, I was actually up later than I've managed in the past few days. It wasn't purposeful, it just sort of happened, and when I saw the time and realized it was after midnight, I quickly stopped what I was doing and went to bed. For the past few days, I've been tired enough by 9pm that I haven't had ANY chance of staying up like this, so it was pretty strange. I also slept rather late as result, so I'm thankful that's still an option right now (though I really do need to be setting my usual alarms again to prepare for kids going back to school).
My head hurts, again (or maybe "still", since I don't think I ever actually got rid of the headache from yesterday... or the day before...), but I did manage to sleep all night without taking anything for it. This morning is another story - I grabbed a couple of Tylenol to help me face a dreary day, been raining all night long and still drizzling out there now.
For now, I need to go deal with all the groceries I bought and didn't organize last night, starting with steaming a dozen eggs in the pressure cooker so I'll have "boiled" eggs on hand. If anyone has a pressure cooker and hasn't yet experienced the awesomeness of steamed eggs, you really should try it:

    - put eggs on a trivet without stacking (mine does 12, a very close fit but no stacking and no rubbing up against the pot
    - add a cup or so of water (I read once to fill to just beneath eggs, which is what I do, about 1.5 cups for mine and it works well)
    - use the manual setting to cook for 4 minutes (some say 5, I like the texture of 4 - not runny, and not rubbery)
    - natural pressure release 5 minutes, then quick release anything left
    - drain (or remove) and add (to) cool water to cool the eggs
    - peel as needed - shell comes off so much more easily (seriously, I haven't mangled a white yet since doing them this way!)

I usually just keep mine in the fridge with the shells on until I'm going to eat them, but it's easy enough to peel them and save in a baggie when going on a trip (or if taking for a lunch, etc.)

Day 4 already, guys! So I know it's super early, but I'm already having crazy dreams. Coincidence?? Or just a result of sleeping more deeply for the past few nights? Probably a bit of both. I've also noticed that in only four days, my resting heart rate has dropped from 83 to 75! That's a big deal for me since I have some slight heart issues and I'm making a huge effort to improve my heart health right now. Anyone else noticing anything yet, other than being sleepy and/or cranky?
Food-wise I brought leftovers for lunch today. Kale and brussels sprouts salad tossed in lemon mustard dressing I made, with carrots and shredded chicken thighs mixed in. Tonight I think dinner will be some kind of salmon bowl with avocado. Yum! Happy day 4 to all!

Tonight's definitely better than last night... no meds so far, and I don't think I'll need them in order to sleep, so that's a vast improvement. My shopping took longer than I wanted (2 stores) and cost more than I wanted (but some of it will carry over to next week, so hopefully I'll see a less than expected bill for next week's groceries!), but it's finally done and I can relax... at least until I wake up tomorrow and have to go organize it all in the fridge, since it's currently just kind of crammed in where I could fit it

Day 4 for me! Currently eating my lunch, which is compliant green curry chicken, sweet potato and spinach.
Headaches have seemed to pass which is great!Last night I was pretty tired so didn't head into CrossFit, but slept well which is excellent. Don't quite want to "Kill all the things" but definitely more irritable than I normally am.
Planning on making a bunless burger with home fries for dinner tonight!
    Hope everyone is doing well

Day 3 done!  I hope you're all doing well.  I currently have mini bison meatloaves cooking in the oven and can't wait to eat!  I make a lot of mini meatloaves, patties and meatballs using ground chicken, turkey or bison and add various ingredients to them.  The bison ones in the oven have roasted red peppers, kalamata olives and are seasoned with Trader Joes green goddess dressing.  I often add Franks, shredded carrots & celery to make buffalo-style ones.
I'll be pairing some roasted cauliflower with dinner.  Hopefully it's done soon-I'm hungry!
I had today off and ended up sleeping in until 10:30!!!!  I can't remember the last time I slept in that late!  lol
